HUGHES Dies After Rich Life of 84 Years By Charles Roy Vance When Mrs. Elizabeth Baird Hughes fell asleep Wednesday morning, Jan. 21, and her soul took its flight to 'mansions in the sky', a void was left in the village of Hughes that cannot be filled. Mrs. Hughes had lived a rich full life of almost 84 years. For 30 years this little lady had been superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday School at Hughes. It is said by those who knew her and loved for.for to know her was to love her.many times she had walked quite a distance up a slippery hill on Sunday morning to the church and gathered wood and built fires so that the church would be warm when the children came. For 60 years Mrs. Hughes had been actively connected with the post office in the little village of Hughes, North Carolina. Here she met the villagers daily and knew them all and always smiled and asked about the family. She visited the sick and helped the needy and did all those things Jesus Christ mentioned when he was here on earth. Mr. Hughes answered the summons of the grim reaper just four years ago, Jan. 23, 1944. And, even at her advanced age, Mrs. Hughes carried on smiling, and ministering. This good and Godly woman saw so much beauty in life. She wrote poems and had them put into book form. Poems about roses and streams and lovely landscapes and little children. The writer didn't know Mrs. Hughes but some of her friends told us about her splendid personality.about her work and her aid to people that we felt inspired to write this little story in the hope it would be an inspiration to others to so live that when life here on earth is ended, people will remember how sweet it is to live right, live clean, to love God and humanity. True religion was personified in the life of Elizabeth Baird Hughes. She made this world a better place in which to live because she knew the art of getting the most out of life. She knew that to get the most out of life we must put everything into it that is good and beautiful. Mrs. Hughes was born March 17, 1864, and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Dunlap Baird and the widow of the late Brown Hughes. Six sons and four daughters survive her: Staples Hughes, of Bristol, Tennessee; Jimmy, Ronald, Charles and Claude Hughes of Newland, N.C.; Nathaniel, of Hughes; Mrs. D. P. Burleson, of Spruce Pine; Mrs. J. W. Johnson, of Hughes; Mrs. J. P. Hall, of Plumtree; Mrs. William Rice, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee. Twenty-two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive. HUGHES, Garfey "Johnson County News," Thursday, February 22, 1945 Obituaries. HUGHES, John "Elizabethton Star," Sunday, July 5, 1936 DEATH CLIMAXES LIQUOR BRAWL CLUB INJURES ARE FATAL TO JOHN HUGHES Valley Forge Man Dies In Hospital After Beating. Four Held Companions In Brawl Charged With Murder. Victim of what Sheriff J. M. Moreland described as a drunken Fourth of July brawl, John Hughes, 24, Valley Forge, father of five children, died Saturday evening in the Elizabeth Hospital from a fractured skull and concussion of the brain. Hughes was found on the ET & WSC railroad tracks Saturday morning about 1 a.m. He never gained consciousness. Held in Carter County jail on charges of murder and under bail of $1,00 each were four Valley Forge men who, officials claim, were the other members of a drunken party, which was climaxed by the death of Hughes. The men are Robert Arwood, Charlie Vaughn, Jarvin Johnson and Lloyd Guy. The men will be given a preliminary trial in the court of Magistrate J. A. Smith, Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Funeral services for Hughes will be held at the Christian church at Valley Forge this afternoon at three o'clock with the Reverend John Hall and Rev. John Matthews officiating. Sheriff Moreland stated that while in the intoxicated condition of all the participants of the brawl prevented obtaining a clear picture of the manner in which Hughes death was brought about, blurred facts obtained from the four held residents of Valley Forge, seemed to indicate that Hughes was an object of attack from the other four members of the party, who staged their brawl at the north end of the Doe river bridge at Valley Forge. From all appearances Moreland stated, Hughes had been beaten with a club, whether by all four or by one was not known, then carried to the railroad tracks, at that point and left. Hughes was discovered by the engineer of ET & WNC freight train which was coming to Elizabethton. Sheriff's officers were on the spot investigating within ten minutes. Three of the men were arrested before dawn yesterday. As Hughes, who was said to be drunk also, never gained consciousness, what he could have told remains unknown. Moreland stated that more details were expected as officers continued drilling the four men held in jail. Hughes, an employee of the American Bemberg Corporation, is survived by one son, John Jr.; three daughters, Gloria, Elaine, Wanda; widow, Mrs. Mary Hughes; mother, Mrs. Roy Buchanan, Spruce Pine, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. H. A. Franklin, Valley Forge; brother, Thomas Hughes, Kenninsville, N.C. Interment will be made in the Franklin Cemetery.
