"Elizabethton Star," Elizabethton, TN, Saturday, March 2, 1929 [photo] Funeral Services Held for Miss Effie Slemp Funeral services for Miss Effie Elizabeth Slemp, who died Monday evening at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Slemp, Lee street, following an illness of short duration, were conducted at the Baptist church at Butler, Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock, the Rev. Walter W. Worley of Vaughtsville officiating. Burial was made in the Rainbolt cemetery. Pall-bearers were Paul Goodman, Dr. Gambill, Prof. Nat Duncan, Vaught Pierce, L. C. Burchfiel, Bill Curtis, Goodman and Basee Howell. Honorary pall-bearers were A. H. McQueen, Prof. Poage, R. H. Ritchie, L. L. Goodman, Dr. Swift, J. P. Merry, W. J. Pierce, A. M. Stout and Sandy Greenwill. Those in charte of the flowers were Misses Loretta Stout, Inez Reece, Florence Eller, Maude Goodman, Ruth G. Howell, Ethel Carriager, Una Slemp, Dorothy Wiseman, Christine Goodman, Selma Curtis and Mary Curtis; Mesdames L. C. King, R. H. Ritchie and Anna Butler. Miss Slemp had been in declining health since an attack of influenza several weeks ago. Suffering with a sudden attack of illness on Sunday, her condition grandually became worse, resulting in death on the following evening. The deceased, a teacher of the 8A grade at the Junior high school, resumed her duties of teaching until almost noon on Friday, having attended the Inter-City meeting and luncheon at the John Sevier hotel, Johnson City, tendered by the John Sevier chapter, D. A. R. commemorating Washington's birthday. Miss Slemp, regent of the Watauga Chapter, U. S. D. 1812, and exregent of the Julius Dugger chapter, D. A. R., was a charter member of the two local organizations. She was to have served as a page to the national D. A. R., at Washington, and reget to the national U. S. D. A. 1812, this April. She served as publicity page to the national D. A. R. congress in Washington, last year, at the state meeting in Chattanooga, in 1925, during the administration of Mrs. E. M. Sleck, state regent, she served as page and flag bearer. During the state meeting held in Elizabethton in 1926, was state page, and attended the national associate council meeting, 1926, 1927 as U. S. D. 1812 page. The deceased is a graduate of the Watauga Acad., Butler, which school she is the present president of the alumnae association, and attended college at the Beurea College, Beura, Ky; Teacher's college, Johnson City and Peabody college, Nashville. She has taught for several years in the elementary and high schools of Carter and Johnson counties, having taught her first school at the age of seventeen. She is past Worothy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star of Butler. The deceased, a relative of Bascom Slemp, is survived by the parents, who came to this city three years ago from Butler to reside, and three brothers, Clyde and Danna Slemp of this city and Edward Slemp of Butler. Memorial services are to be held at 10:20 Monday mornig at the Junior High School. On Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. W. M. Vaught, Sunset Hill, a joint memorial service will be conducted by the Watauga Chapter, U. S. D. 1812, and the Julius Dugger Chapter, D. A. R. Mrs. John R.
