God only knows what she had to put up with him. He was apparently very intelligent and a hard worker but took alot out on Matilda. One story I read said he was having a fit one night and threw his shoe into the fire, expecting Matilda to retrieve it for him. She took the poker and shoved it deeper into the fire where it burnt up. The next day, he had to wrap a cloth around his foot and walk to town and get another shoe made. I bet he never threw his shoes in the fire again!! Looks like they stayed married until she died (1888) then 2 years later he married a Martha Nidiffer. I remain a Matilda fan!!!!!
