    1. 1870 Census Cross/Smith

    3. Hi Dawn, Since you sent me the 1850 and 1860 census I was wondering if there was an 1870 census. I realize with the War there may not have been, but was interested if my Smith family was still living in Carter Co., afterwards. Since James and William Henry were suppose to have joined the Confederates I don't know if they survived and it may only be Eliza Smith (Cross), second wife, as the head of the household. Otherwise I may have to assume they died or moved on. That would have left her with only the daughters to raise. I now know that Eliza was Eliza J. Foster before she married O Dell and then Smith so she may have moved in with her family. If you have any other suggestions to pass along for me to find them I'd appreciate it. Not living in Carter Co. and knowing the Courthouse was burned down I don't know where else I can look. I have e-mailed the Historian, listed in the Carter Co. web page, to ask for deed records, but haven't heard anything. Thank you again for any help, Joan Williams
