Hi Listers, I've written before asking for help on my Cross family and there hasn't been much that can be found. I sent for the Civil War Pension records of my ggrandfather James Cross and received them today. I had an interesting revelations when I read the records. He joined with an alias of David Smith. In order to receive his pension he had to get affidavits of people who knew him. Two of them were David and William Peters and the third was a James Wilson. They all said it had been 25 years since they had seen him, but that he was who he said he was. It was also stated that his father also used both Smith and Cross names so probably that is why he did. In the statements it was said that they had grown up with him and knew his family before the war and all 4 of them had crossed the lines and joined the Union together. They served, messed and were discharged together. I'm wondering if anyone could find in a census my family with the Smith name. If the Peters and Wilsons lived near by there is a possibility we will find them, also. In the paperwork James Cross alias David Smith filled out he said he was born in Stony Creek with Elizabethton as their P.O. address. I'm not familiar with the area so don't know how close they are in proximity These are the names I know as the Cross family: James Cross-father Evaline Cross-mother James Cross-son b. September 10, 1848. was 15 when he joined Company "L" 13th Tenn. Cav. there may be other siblings Thanks in advance, Joan Williams, Miami, FL.
