    1. Captain Daniel Ellis Question
    2. Allen Ellis
    3. As announced some time ago, I am writing a scholarly book about Capt. Dan Ellis, the Carter County Unionist who led thousands of refugees through the mountains to the Union lines during the Civil War I am, at last, in the writing stage of the book, and I may actually meet my publisher's deadline of the first of autumn. Despite years of research there are some areas in which I have come up short. Over the next few weeks I will send out queries, in a last-ditch attempt to fill some holes. This is the only message board on which I plan to present these, so feel free to share with others of which you may be members. I appreciate and all assistance as I strive to create a fair and balanced work. My first question: I have been unable to locate official Confederate documentation that mentions Ellis. Sources say that there was a reward on his head; Ellis mentions it himself in his Thrilling Adventures (pp. 249-250), which is in April, 1864 in the context of his narrative, but again, I have seen nothing official. Has anyone seen any contemporary documentation of a reward for the death or capture of Dan Ellis, or any other mentions of his wartime activities? Or know where to look or whom to ask? As always, I welcome any leads to any information, images, artifacts, or so forth pertaining to Daniel Ellis. Regards, Allen Allen W. Ellis Professor of Library Services W.
