    1. Birchfield
    2. If there are any Birchfield researchers out there I could use some help with something... From information on the Internet it looks like most researchers/compilers are giving the father for John Birchfield who married 1)Angeline Baker and 2) Luvenna Brewer as Rueben Birchfield and Celia Hughes. The following is the obit for this John Birchfield: BURCHFIELD, John “Elizabethton Star,” Monday, May 3, 1937 CENTENARIAN DIES SUNDAY [photo] Death Sunday ended the long life of John Burchfield, Shell Creek rural route, who produced Bible record to substantiate his claim that he was 103 years old last March 15. The centenarian died at the home of his son about eight miles from Shell Creek. Mr. Burchfield, who gained statewide recognition on his 103rd birthday this spring, was born in North Carolina in 1834. Most of his life has been spent in Carter county. He is survived by one brother, Davie Burchfield, Glenair, N. C., and nine children, Sam, Tom, Dave, John, Jr., Nath and Wilson, Mrs. Vada Buchanan, Miss Vastie Burchfield, Mrs. Maggie Perry. All the children, with the exception of Mrs. Perry, who resides at Minneapolis, N. C., lives in or around Shell Creek or Roan Mountain. Funeral services were to be held this afternoon at the Hampton Creek Cemetery at two o’clock Now what I don't understand is there are only three John Birchfield's on the 1850 Carter County Census. One is age 5 and belongs to Rueben. One is age 5 and belongs to William. The other is age 4 and is living in the household of James Tipton. If the above John Birchfield was born in 1834 he would have been 16 in 1850. Where is he and why would Rueben name two sons John? John Birchfield and wife Angeline is found in Bakersville, Mitchell Co., NC in 1880. He lists his age as 35. Perfect age for one of the 5 year olds on the 1850 census. I would buy that then he is the child of Rueben but what about the obit saying he has Bible proof he was born in 1834? Rueben would have been old enough to have children that old. The obit lists a brother named Davie. Does anyone know if Rueben had a son named Davie? I have only the children listed on the 1850 census and he isn't one of those but I realize if he's still living would have been born later. I may be missing something that's right in front of my face but I'm puzzled. If someone can straighten me out I'd appreciate it.
