    1. Samuel P. Carter's Burial Plot
    2. Javan Michael DeLoach
    3. Yesterday, I visited the Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown, DC, to find the burial plot for Admiral/General Samuel Powhatan Carter. This cemetery is very old, and has over 1900 deceased buried there, many of them famous politicians, war heroes, and members of the Georgetown high society. The cemetery office has a very efficient index system, and I was directed to Lot #822. I did a survey of the lot, which has been posted in the Carter County USGenWeb Archives: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/carter/cemeteries/carter02.txt The office manager informed me that about four years ago, one of the old trees had been blown down directly onto Adm. Carter's grave stone. I found the stone broken into three pieces, the angel that was perched on top, the base that the angel sat upon, and the main stone. The main stone itself was two large pieces, a base and a roughly 2'x2'x3' stone which held the inscriptions. This stone had been twisted about 20 degrees on the base when was hit by the tree, but had not fallen like the top two pieces. I asked at the office about what had to be done to repair the tombstone. I was advised that their policy was that family descendents were responsible for the maintenance of the stones. Samuel P. Carter had two sons by his first wife, Carolyn C. Potts. The first son, Alfred P. Carter, died when he was 7 years old. The second son, Samuel P. Carter, Jr. never married, so there were no descendents. Does anyone know if there is an organization or society in Carter County that could take on the project of repairing Samuel P. Carter's tombstone? Mike

    1. Captain Daniel Ellis - Book in Progress
    2. Allen Ellis
    3. I am in the process of writing a scholarly book about Captain Daniel Ellis, the Carter County Civil War figure, and I am issuing this call for anyone who may be able to help me to locate obscure information, images, artifacts, and so forth. Most of the information I have found to date is represented on my web site, Captain Daniel Ellis, The Old Red Fox of East Tennessee, 1827-1908, at http://www.nku.edu/~ellisa/danielellis. Lots of genealogical/cemetery information there, too. My goal is to write a complete, fair, and balanced account of Ellis' life. I recently spoke with a fellow who is adamant that Ellis was a liar and a scoundrel, and that no serious scholar would take him seriously. Please be assured that, despite my surname, I am not averse to hearing such points of view, and will take them seriously. Any tips or leads that you might suggest are greatly appreciated! Needless to say, the best of intentions don't always get carried out. It was only after I had made one visit to the courthouse and didn't find anything that I learned there are apparently loose older documents that I might have seen if I knew to ask for them; the clerk's staff don't just volunteer the information. But I never had a chance to get back. However, I did come across a will online for John Peoples which names among his sons James Peoples. I do not have a reference for this, but for whatever it's worth: WILL: Last Will and Testament of John Peoples "In the name of God, Amen. I John Peoples of Carter County in the state of Tennessee do make my last will in form and manner following; that is to say I do give to my eldest son Nathan Peoples, one Negro boy named Isom to him and his heirs forever. And to my second son named James Peoples I do give one Negro woman named Peggy to him and his heirs forever. And to my third son named Samuel W. H. Peoples I do give one Negro woman named Dannier and all that tract of land I live on, all my personal and perishable property to him and his heirs forever, free from any person or persons whoever claiming any right thereunto in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th day of January in the year 1801. John Peoples"
