I just read about this new database. http://www.thebattery.org/castle/castlegarden.html The Battery Conservancy is preparing to launch CastleGarden.org on August 1, 2005 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the immigrant depot at Castle Garden on August 1, 1855. The electronic database project is led by Dr. Ira Glazier, former Director of The Center for Migration Research at The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies and Immigration. CastleGarden.org will be a vital resource for the general public and for scholars interested in the history of immigration through the Port of New York. 1. Pinson
    2. Charles Leach
    3. Dr. Murrell Pinson was born in Texas abt 1887. He married Pauline Wrenne, from Nashville, Tennessee, about 1913. 1920 census shows them living in Atoka, Oklahoma, where he had a general practice of medicine. 1930 census shows them living in Elizabethton, Carter County, TN, where I assume he had a medical practice. Mrs. Pinson (Pauline) died in Memphis in 1984. I am unable to find any record of Dr. Pinson's death. They had two daughters, Roberta and Margaret (Polly). Roberta married a Mr. Bashor and lived in Elizabethton, TN; later moved to Atlanta, where she died in 2002. Unable to find records on other daughter. Hoping one of you can help me find more data on this family. Charles A. Leach [email protected]

These Oaks are thought to descend from John or Joshua Oaks of Toe River Valley area of Burke, Co, NC. Maybe they are related to your Jemima Oaks although I find no record of that name. The document says: the congregation was first organized at the home of W. M. SNYDER, the 1st preaching at the home of John HILL (b. 1802 in Burke Co., NC--my 3rd great-grandfather), and the lst pastors were Bro. D. T. WRIGHT and Jas. I. TIPTON. After these meetings in the homes of WM SNYDER and JOHN HILL ( in April, 1842) the congregation built a church and called it Mount Pleasant. Preachers included T.J. Wright [sic], with aid of other ministers as helpers: S. H. MILLARD, A. CAMPBELL, John WRIGHT, Jas. I TIPTON, and R. ELLIS. From Mount Pleasant church moved to Fisher's old field "where the church grew rapidly for a season." First families of this church congregation included the Michael Grindstaff family, sons of the Campbells, Hills, Snyders, Halls, probably some Lacys, Simerlys, and others...." according to personal interviews with Lyde Hall, John Campbell, and others conducted in May, 1950. I am looking for any info on the location(s) of this church (Hampton, Elizabethtown, etc.?), church records. etc., as well as any suggestions as to which libraries, church associations, or county records I might contact. In particular, the 1-page transcription I have (but no source name for the book in which it appears or the earlier record from which it is copied) references the meeting when "John Hill and his father 'confessed Christ' followed by others...." This is the ONLY reference I have to John Hill's father--a brick wall for me and multitudes of other Hill researchers. I believe John's father is old Swinfield Hill from Burke Co., NC, and hope there might be a reference to John's father and/or brothers (esp. any Absolom Hill ) in early church records. In April, 1842 John Hill was probably a widower with 7 children ranging in age from 7-21. He will soon marry Elizabeth Haynes/Hains somewhere in Carter Co. around 1843 and later moves (1846?) to McMinn Co., TN wher! e he dies 21 Mar 1877. Please contact me if you have information or can suggest where I might look further. With many thanks, Fran Hill [email protected]

    1. Birchfield
    2. If there are any Birchfield researchers out there I could use some help with something... From information on the Internet it looks like most researchers/compilers are giving the father for John Birchfield who married 1)Angeline Baker and 2) Luvenna Brewer as Rueben Birchfield and Celia Hughes. The following is the obit for this John Birchfield: BURCHFIELD, John “Elizabethton Star,” Monday, May 3, 1937 CENTENARIAN DIES SUNDAY [photo] Death Sunday ended the long life of John Burchfield, Shell Creek rural route, who produced Bible record to substantiate his claim that he was 103 years old last March 15. The centenarian died at the home of his son about eight miles from Shell Creek. Mr. Burchfield, who gained statewide recognition on his 103rd birthday this spring, was born in North Carolina in 1834. Most of his life has been spent in Carter county. He is survived by one brother, Davie Burchfield, Glenair, N. C., and nine children, Sam, Tom, Dave, John, Jr., Nath and Wilson, Mrs. Vada Buchanan, Miss Vastie Burchfield, Mrs. Maggie Perry. All the children, with the exception of Mrs. Perry, who resides at Minneapolis, N. C., lives in or around Shell Creek or Roan Mountain. Funeral services were to be held this afternoon at the Hampton Creek Cemetery at two o’clock Now what I don't understand is there are only three John Birchfield's on the 1850 Carter County Census. One is age 5 and belongs to Rueben. One is age 5 and belongs to William. The other is age 4 and is living in the household of James Tipton. If the above John Birchfield was born in 1834 he would have been 16 in 1850. Where is he and why would Rueben name two sons John? John Birchfield and wife Angeline is found in Bakersville, Mitchell Co., NC in 1880. He lists his age as 35. Perfect age for one of the 5 year olds on the 1850 census. I would buy that then he is the child of Rueben but what about the obit saying he has Bible proof he was born in 1834? Rueben would have been old enough to have children that old. The obit lists a brother named Davie. Does anyone know if Rueben had a son named Davie? I have only the children listed on the 1850 census and he isn't one of those but I realize if he's still living would have been born later. I may be missing something that's right in front of my face but I'm puzzled. If someone can straighten me out I'd appreciate it.
