It has been passed down in our family that the two unknowns buried there were the Fry men. I am the greatgranddaughter of Elizabeth Fry, daughter of Moses Lemuel Fry. In chapter 38 of Thrilling Adventures of Daniel Ellis, written by himself originally published in 1867 by harper and Brothers, pages 328-336 tells of the attack at Limestone Cove November 19, 1863. Chapter 40, page 348 tells of March 1864 when John Campbell, John Fry, and Eli Fry (perhaps my great-great grandfather) were killed by the same murderers. Dorothy Pagano of Lucy Harrell and Thomas B. Campbell descent by Albert E.Campbell to Johnny Campbell to Hobart Campbell. Daniel Ellis describes the November 1863 Limestone Cove Massacre (or Bell Massacre, or Witcher's Massacre, as it is sometimes called) on pages 329-335 of his Thrilling Adventures of Daniel Ellis. This is also recalled by Samuel W. Scott and Samuel P. Angel on pp. 338-340 of their History of the Thirteenth Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, U.S.A. Ellis describes further Limestone Cove violence in March, 1864 (pp. 348-349), naming Ely and John Fry as victims. Scott and Angel address this on their p. 361. As a storyteller, do you have anything about Dan Ellis? Regards, Allen Captain Daniel Ellis Web Site http://www.nku.edu/~ellisa/danielellis ________________________________ From: G. I will check to see if the book "Fox Fire Book Vol. Four is at the Library. It will be interesting to see pictures and read about Tom Campbell (who lived to be 100!) of Mitchell, NC...my great, great, great grandfather! Longevity seems to be a characterstic of the Campbells other than Albert E Campbell who apparently died at about 30 years old (1834-1864). Will also check out the WPA government website, "Shave Them" story to find out about Simon Herrell. Very mysterious, and I can't wait!

He was an interesting character who lived to be about 100 years old. Simon Herrell, brother to Lucy Herrell Campbell, was his uncle who lived in Mitchell co., NC and is buried at Tipton Hill Cemetery over there. Simon Herrell was a farmer who also built plows, wagons and surries. There is some interesting information about him on the WPA government website. Look for "Shave Them" for the story.

B. Campbell. It may be that Thomas Batey/Bady Campbell and Lucy Herrell's son, Albert, may have been named for Thomas's father, Albert E. Campbell? The child Mary Frye...the name fits with this family as Albert married an Elizabeth "Fry". The children of Albert and Elizabeth that I am aware of were: Elizabeth C. Campbell Eli (Elijah) Jackson Campbell, and Thomas Batey Campbell. Although Albert and Elizabeth were born in NC, I have the place of their death as the Limestone Cove area of TN. I have their children's birth and death places being in Limestone Cove, TN. Will check out the Mitchell Co. NC site. Thanks so very much for your help! [email protected]

In the household is a child named Fry. I believe her name is Mary Frye. I would think this child is probably a grandchild of Thomas B. Campbell and Lucy Herrell Campbell. I say this just to give you a clue about this family, however, I am sure Thomas Bady Campbell married Lucy Herrell and that Lucy Herrell Campbell had a son named Albert Campbell. If you will join the Mitchell county E-mail list at Rootsweb and post questions on there, you will get more specific information about these families, I believe. Michell co., NC joins Carter co. TN.

It mainly talks about the son Lowry and his wife and family. Here is what it says at the beginning: Lowry and Ella Rains were married in Carter County in 1904. Lowry was born March 23, 1880 in Carter County. He was the son of Thomas O'Dell and Frances Pleasant White. He had three brothers, Taylor, Robert, and Stacey., and three sisters, Molly White Pierce, Jennie White Peters, and Verda White Elliott. The rest is dealing with a little family history of Ella Rains White and Lowry and Ella's life and children. It says Lowry and Ella are buried in Grindstaff Cemetery on Stoney Creek. that is in Carter County.. The article was submitted by Mrs. Rubie Grindstaff

My great great grandparents were Albert E Campbell who married Elizabeth Fry. Supposedly Elizabeth Fry Campbell married William Davis 24 April 1866 after Albert died in 1864. I don't have marriage licenses for either Albert E Campbell or William Davis. No other info. for William Davis as of yet. If you find any links, please let me know. (Your William Davis would have probably been much older than the William Davis who married Elizabeth Fry Campbell.) Thanks.
