Hi Dawn, Since you sent me the 1850 and 1860 census I was wondering if there was an 1870 census. I realize with the War there may not have been, but was interested if my Smith family was still living in Carter Co., afterwards. Since James and William Henry were suppose to have joined the Confederates I don't know if they survived and it may only be Eliza Smith (Cross), second wife, as the head of the household. Otherwise I may have to assume they died or moved on. That would have left her with only the daughters to raise. I now know that Eliza was Eliza J. Foster before she married O Dell and then Smith so she may have moved in with her family. If you have any other suggestions to pass along for me to find them I'd appreciate it. Not living in Carter Co. and knowing the Courthouse was burned down I don't know where else I can look. I have e-mailed the Historian, listed in the Carter Co. web page, to ask for deed records, but haven't heard anything. Thank you again for any help, Joan Williams

Hi Dawn, I'm sorry, I accidentally sent your e-mail back to you when I meant to hit the compose icon to write to you. Thank you for the census images. This is blowing my mind, finding that our family used a different name. Now we don't know which is the real surname. My ggrandfather told us his parents were Cross. I wonder why the alias Smith? You have been a great help. Joan Williams, Miami, Fl.
Hi Listers, I've written before asking for help on my Cross family and there hasn't been much that can be found. I sent for the Civil War Pension records of my ggrandfather James Cross and received them today. I had an interesting revelations when I read the records. He joined with an alias of David Smith. In order to receive his pension he had to get affidavits of people who knew him. Two of them were David and William Peters and the third was a James Wilson. They all said it had been 25 years since they had seen him, but that he was who he said he was. It was also stated that his father also used both Smith and Cross names so probably that is why he did. In the statements it was said that they had grown up with him and knew his family before the war and all 4 of them had crossed the lines and joined the Union together. They served, messed and were discharged together. I'm wondering if anyone could find in a census my family with the Smith name. If the Peters and Wilsons lived near by there is a possibility we will find them, also. In the paperwork James Cross alias David Smith filled out he said he was born in Stony Creek with Elizabethton as their P.O. address. I'm not familiar with the area so don't know how close they are in proximity These are the names I know as the Cross family: James Cross-father Evaline Cross-mother James Cross-son b. September 10, 1848. was 15 when he joined Company "L" 13th Tenn. Cav. there may be other siblings Thanks in advance, Joan Williams, Miami, FL.

CLAWSON is his daughter Louisa Jane who first married Johnson STOUT. But I'm wondering where her father was living in 1870 & 1880 census. I have only found him in 1850 census JCT with apparently his 2nd wife Sarah. Louisa Jane's death abstract lists her mother as Sarah which may be in error. I had assumed the 1878 marriage of Elizabeth DUGGER was a different Robert Clawson. Jerry Stout
