Sheffield Born Feb. 11, 1829 Died May 6, 1905 In life beloved, in death lamented" Since all the census I saw list her as a Sheffield, I am guessing that Pardue was her maiden name. The 1900 census shows her as being born in TN, both parents born in NC. Thanks, Carol rite to you.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EeB.2ACE/445.1 Message Board Post: Carol: I'm happy for you in finding Laurana's maiden name of PARDUE. Could you tell me what Fayette Co. TN cemetery she is buried in and her name in full on Tombstone? We had assumed she was a sister of Sarah Ann SHEFFIELD BUNTON, since she was living with her in 1850 JCT and next door to her in 1860 JCT. I did a quick search for any PURDUE's that I had in my FTM and a quick census search, but no luck finding a match. Jerry Stout

Surnames: PARDUE, SHEFFIELD Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EeB.2ACE/445 Message Board Post: Just had a breakthrough on my g-g-grandmother and found her tombstone in Fayette County, TN. She was Laurana PARDUE, born 11 Feb 1829, died 6 May 1905. Her son, William Riley Sheffield, was born in Carter Co., TN 6 Dec 1851 and apparently had a younger sister, Martha. I believe that Laurana (Lurena, Laraney . . .) was born in TN or NC and was widowed between 1855 and 1860, but I don't know that. i am writing in hope that one of you will have any little bit of information on Laurana or my family there. I know there were Sheffields in Carter and Johnson Counties; just don't know if or which ones are connected. Don't know anything yet about Pardues, since I first got that name yesterday at the cemetery! Thank you for your time and any help you can provide. 1. Tony Marion and Dan Crowe -- a Daniel Ellis Question
    2. Allen Ellis
    3. In the book, Call Forth the Mighty Men, by Bob Womack (Bessemer, AL: Colonial Press, 1987). Womack writes that, when Tony Marion and Dan Crowe reprinted Thrilling Adventures of Daniel Ellis in 1974, they "came under some criticism from people who charge that the events [presented in the book] are overdrawn." Has anyone ever seen criticism of Marion and Crowe for reprinting Ellis' book? Thanks, Allen Allen W. Ellis Professor of Library Services W. 1. Highway Markers, Dan Ellis' Residences
    2. Allen Ellis
    3. This week, a couple of questions. There are (or were) three highway markers that mention Dan Ellis. The "Old Red Fox" one (1 E 85) in Carter County is, of course, long gone. There are two others, both titled "Federal Underground Route," on US 23 in Sullivan County. One (1 A 83) is between the Virginia line and Morrison City; the other (1 A 84) is south of the Holston River. Are these two markers standing today? Also, where did Dan Ellis live? It is well-known that he had a house near the Doe River which was destroyed in the great May, 1901 flood, but where was it? Where was his residence afterwards? Previously? 2. Allen Ellis
    3. Two questions this time: I am trying to reach Gloria Knight, but my e-mails are coming back as undeliverable. Gloria, are you out there? and, It has been said that many copies of Dan Ellis' book, Thrilling Adventures of Daniel Ellis (Harper and Brothers, 1867) were burned by men who were unflatteringly portrayed in it. Has anyone ever seen documentation of such book burnings? Also, I received an e-mail from Phyllis White, presumably based on my postings. Phyllis, my response to you came back as undeliverable.
