    2. Allen Ellis
    3. For my book, I was hoping to find images of all of Daniel Ellis' children. I have uncovered but one, of Minerva Elizabeth Ellis Hathaway (available on my website). Someone is supposed to be sending me photos of U.S. Grant Ellis. I may have a photo of Daniel Ellis, Jr. with his wife, Eliza Collins Ellis, but I can find no one who can verify it. So, can anyone help me locate images of: Barbara Ellen Ellis Bowers; Daniel Ellis, Junior; William Rhea Ellis; Wiley Ellis; and Dr. Joseph Hooker Ellis? Thanks, Allen Allen W. 1. Reactions to Dan Ellis' book.
    2. Allen Ellis
    3. Dan Ellis' book, Thrilling Adventures of Daniel Ellis, was published in April, 1867. I have found reviews in Northern publications, such as the New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, and Harper's New Monthly Magazine, but nothing from the local perspective. I have seen an announcement in a Jonesborough newspaper ("New Book." Union Flag, April 26, 1867, p.?), stating, "As soon as we read the book, we shall give our readers a more extended notice of the merits of the work," but I have found no follow-up. Has anyone seen contemporary Southern reactions to Thrilling Adventures of Daniel Ellis? Many thanks, as usual, Allen Allen W. Ellis Professor of Library Services W. 1. Capt. R.C. Bozen - A Dan Ellis Question
    2. Allen Ellis
    3. Last time it was Captain B.H. Duvall; this time I'm looking for information on Captain R.C. Bozen, of Grayson County, VA (mentioned in Thrilling Adventures of Daniel Ellis, pages 336-340, 342-345, 347, 348, 350; also, History of the 13th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, U.S.A., 334, 341, 361). Bozen is even memorialized in song, credited by Ellis as being written by "a scouter": "Bozen's rogues prowl about in dark nights; Killing and stealing they call Southern rights; They rob our houses, they plunder and press, And frequently take a lady's fine dress, And it's hard times." (Thrilling Adventures 337), and "When Bozen and his men to the mountains did go; For pilots they pressed Harris Whaley and Joe; They killed Isaac Yonce, and threatened his wife, And whipped his little boy for carrying a knife, And it's hard times." (Thrilling Adventures 348) Has anyone ever heard such a song? Does anyone have any further information on Capt. Bozen? I also put this question to the Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board - no luck there. Allen W. Ellis Professor of Library Services W. 1. B.H. Duvall - A Dan Ellis question
    2. Allen Ellis
    3. I put this question to the Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board, but had no luck there. On pages 321-326, 350, 367, 368, 371-372 of Thrilling Adventures of Daniel Ellis, Ellis describes a Capt. B. H. Duvall. Ellis said he was from Louisville, KY, and led a force into Carter and Johnson Counties in December, 1864. He is also mentioned on pages 324, 326, and 335 of Scott and Angel's History of the 13th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, U.S.A. Scott and Angel state that he "had charge of the military force at Elizabethton" in August 1863. Both accounts, as you might guess, depict him as rather the ruthless scoundrel, persecuting Union civilians. Has anyone ever come across additional information pertaining to Capt. Duvall?
