The Watauga TNSSAR Chapter once chartered is going be a great chapter. We will be doing events to honor the many Rev. War Patriots buried in the Watauga area. We will work with the DAR Chapters. Hopefully, we can have our own Color Guard Unit to take part in local historical events. However, for these things to happen we need members from the area. You do not have to live in Carter County. We have started to get some news releases in the STAR and this should help. Robert Nave and myself will be glad to assist anyone with their application. Please contact us. Thanks. Bob Hughes, Past Pres. TNSSR "Opportunities never come to those who wait....they are captured by those who dare to attack". -----Original Message----- From: Robert T. Seeking information as to Mary's last name who married Thomas (1795-1845)Campbell, parents of Anna/Annah Campbell, wife of John Herrell.
Greetings, I'm trying to go back one more generation in the family that I know of as Cross who used the alias of Smith. Trying to see if the Cross name is connected in anyway to Carter Co. The wife was a Bowers and I had great help from this list with her family and history. In Civil War Pension records witnesses for identification stated the family used both the Cross and Smith name interchangeably, but marriage records and census are recorded as Smith. In my file I had a list of Tennessee Land Grants C-Cz, posted on the CROSS list in 1999 by Rex Bertram. I printed it out at that time just in case it would be useful in the future. There are two Cross men listed in Carter Co. who could possibly be a connection. They are listed as follows: Cross, David (CT) 1837, 175a, E dist, bk 20,p. 438, g#21294 Cross, Samuel, (CT) 1829, 75a, E dist, bk 15, p 529 gg 16048 Rootsweb Family Trees have David (1796 & 1799) and Samuel (about 1800) Cross in families in Sullivan Co, possibility brothers and one entry shows a Samuel in Carter Co. Since my James Cross alias Smith (1819) had a son named David it made me curious that there could be a connection. I realize James hiding under the Smith name makes it harder to connect them, but since there seemed to be few Crosses in the area there is a chance they are related. James was married to Lovinia Bowers in 1841 so if he was living in his family home in 1840 the census wouldn't show his name, although he would be a male in the 20 year range. My queries in Sullivan Co. haven't been successful, so far. Thanks, Joan Williams, Miami, FL.

I had long since found out it was wrong. Thomas Bady's mother Mary lived for a while on Greasy Creek with one of her daughter- Elizabeth Fry and her husband John acording to the 1860 census. She is buried close to T.B on Greasy Creek with an unmarked stone. Elizabeth is also buried beside T.B. The husband Thomas Campbell died Apr. 29, 1850 in the Limestone Cove section from the cholic. In the 1850 census, he is listed in the death index. His wife Mary is still living there with three of her children , Mary, Albert E. and Elizabeth. The other children had moved away by then. Their children were Thomas Bady, Elijah Jackson, Mary J,Albert E, Elizabeth, Catherine and maybe Billy. LG
Is there information as to John Fry's parents? My greatgrandmother was also an Elixabeth Fry, daughter of Moses Lemuel Fry and Mary (Polly) Troutman Fry. She married Vee Q. Street. I wonder how my greatgrandmother and John were related. In addition, is there information about the Indian child that John Fry and Elizabeth Campbell Fry are said to have adopted? > [Original Message] > From: Dorothy Pagano <[email protected]> > What was Thomas Bady Campbells mother's maiden name? Dorothy Asked: Was Charlotte McIntire the mother of Jesse, John, James etc.? No, Charlotte McIntire married my gggrandfather, Hugh Herrall, Heral etc. who was a brother to Simon, Lucy, Rebecca and Mary Herrell etc. and all of them were children of John Herrell and Annah Campbell. John and Annah were both born abt. 1795 (Average Census ages). John died abt. 1874 (date of his will) and Annah died after 1880. It appears, from old family information and other sources, that the father of Jesse, James, John, Davis and William was also named Hugh Herrell.. This Hugh Herrell would have been born about 1760. I believe he is the Hugh Harrald etc. who married Rebecka Lakin abt. 1784 in Rowan (Rockingham) NC.. This Hugh Herrells', Harralds etc. family may have had some ties to the Donohoe family of Western NC.. I have been trying to find connections to Lakin and Donohoe for several years.. Old family lore in Mitchell co., NC says that Hugh Herrell, Harald etc. was drowned during a flash flood in a small branch behind his cabin near Big Rock Creek.. Davis Herrell, Harrell etc. lived near Big Rock Creek and Harrells' Hill in 1840 but moved to Haywood Co., NC before the 1850 census.. Some descendents of Davis now live in N.J.. they have been there since about 1930.. about the time the National Park Service took the land for the Smokey Mountain Park. There are still a few of them living in the area of the park. I am not sure they are descendents of Davis or not, however their family has been there for many years and had a silver mine in the area at one time.. G. The old Dungan stone house is across the road from the mill. The St John house is located a few yards northeast of the stone house on Steam Plant Road which intersects with Watauga Road north of the mill. The St John Cemetery is located behind the St John house next to the abandoned Dungan cemetery where Jeremiah Dungans tombstone is located. Col William P Dungan and wife are buried in the St John Cemetery along with the St John family. They were cousins from Smyth County, VA. The Blue Springs Mill was called the Carriger Mill which was torn down about l875 and replaced by the Dungan Mill on the same site. It was built by Col William P Dungan who moved to Carter County, TN from Smyth County, VA in l875. The mill is located on Blue Spring Road where it crosses the Blue Springs Branch in the Hunter community which is located off Highway 9l which connects with the north side of Elizabethton, the county seat. The mill is in very poor, dilapadated condition after being neglected for nearly a century. Col Dungan and George W St John were cousins and both descended from Elisha Dungan, brother to Jeremiah Dungan. St John bought the Dungan mill from Henry Bashor in l866. I am descended from Jeremiah Dungan through his daughter Mary who married John Houston. She inherited the mill property consisted of the mill, stone house and 257 acres of land on the Watauga River and Brush Creek. The Houstons operated the mill until l846/47 when Henry Bashor bought it. Robert T Nave
