    1. [TNCARTER] William Milburn Diary
    2. Allen Ellis
    3. Regarding my previous query about a Civil War diary kept by William Elbert Franklin Sevier Milburn of the 12th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Union), I had a tip to check the Divine Family Papers at the University of Tennessee's Hoskins Library. I was advised that no such diary is included in that collection. If anyone has other suggestions, I'd be most grateful. Thanks, Allen ************************************************************************ From: "Allen Ellis" <ELLISA@nku.edu> Subject: [TNCARTER] William Milburn Diary Date: Sat, 20 Sep 2008 16:25:30 -0400 Carl N Hayes, in his 1966 book, Neighbor Against Neighbor, Brother Against Brother, Greene County in the Civil War, writes of a Civil War diary kept by William Elbert Franklin Sevier Milburn of the 12th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Union). Hayes wrote that "This diary is now in the possession of Mr. John Lindsay, with a copy in the possession of Miss Milburn Divine, Johnson City, Tennessee, who is the granddaughter of the author." Is anyone familiar with these people or the possible whereabouts of the diary/copy today? Allen Ellis

    1. [TNCARTER] William A Lyons b. 1904 prob. Carter Co., TN
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: kentsohio Surnames: LYONS MILLHORN RICHARDS PATE Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.carter/1154/mb.ashx Message Board Post: William A. LYONS was born 17 April 1904 probably in Carter or Sullivan County, Tennessee. His father and mother were James Tipton (Tip) Lyons and Eliza Ann (MILLHORN) Lyons. William (Willie) was married 29 April 1922 in Carter County to Margaret E. (Maggie) RICHARDS. Willie turned Maggie out of the house probably some time in 1928. She filed for divorce and it was granted 12 December 1928. Willie did not appear in court. Margaret was granted custody of their two minor children (Clifton Andrew Lyons and Grace Geneva Lyons) and was granted the use of her maiden name. Here the plot thickens. The living members of the Richards family say that William left town by train, never to be heard from again sometime around 1928-1930. I have not been able find any evidence of William after 1928 in either Sullivan or Carter County. Another version of the story was told by Willie and Maggie's son Clifton before he died. Cliff said that Margaret Richards Lyons and an unnamed boyfriend killed William, put his body in the smokehouse, and burned it to the ground. According to family legend, Maggie took her young daughter Grace to Asheville, North Carolina and placed her in the Buncombe Children's Home. Margaret then disappears for awhile (perhaps with a boyfriend). Neither Margaret Richards Lyons nor William A. Lyons can be found in the 1930 census. Grace cannot be found in the census either. Maggie's son Clifton moved in with his grandfather, James Tip Lyons, grew up in Tip's home in Bluff City, TN and later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. Margaret also shows up in Indianapolis, moving there perhaps around 1930, probably unmarried at the time. She then married Melvin Curtis Pate, where and when I don't know. Margaret Richards Lyons Pate died 1 February 1980 in Beech Grove, Marion County, Indiana. Clifton Lyons died 11 July 2002 in Beech Grove and Grace Geneva Lyons (married name Rander) died 6 June 2006 in Sun City, Riverside County, California. So to summarize: 1. Where was William A. Lyons born on 17 April 1904? 2. Where did he go assuming that he left the Carter/Sullivan County area about 1928? 3. Was he killed by his wife and her boyfriend? 4. When and where did William A. Lyons die and where is he buried? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Dorothy, No, Dr David Bell was a Minister of the Gospel as well as a Doctor of Medicine. He performed the marriages of many people. Sorry I should have been more clear. Charlie McKinney had at least 40 children with 4 different wives in old Burke County, NC. There is a book available by Estella McKinney Harper titled "Charlie McKinney and related families" that gives the details of his life and families. Charles is the son of William and Mary McKinney. The McKinney dna project is looking for males with the surname of McKinney to take the dna test and I am offering to pay for it if we can track the family back to William McKinney (1735-1814 Burke Co, NC) or Charles McKinney (1773-1858). Many McKinney families from Carter Co. Tenn are from this line. If you are a McKinney male or know of one in your family that is willing to take this perfectly safe, easy, and secure test, please contact me. HUGHES Dies After Rich Life of 84 Years By Charles Roy Vance When Mrs. Elizabeth Baird Hughes fell asleep Wednesday morning, Jan. 21, and her soul took its flight to 'mansions in the sky', a void was left in the village of Hughes that cannot be filled. Mrs. Hughes had lived a rich full life of almost 84 years. For 30 years this little lady had been superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday School at Hughes. It is said by those who knew her and loved for.for to know her was to love her.many times she had walked quite a distance up a slippery hill on Sunday morning to the church and gathered wood and built fires so that the church would be warm when the children came. For 60 years Mrs. Hughes had been actively connected with the post office in the little village of Hughes, North Carolina. Here she met the villagers daily and knew them all and always smiled and asked about the family. She visited the sick and helped the needy and did all those things Jesus Christ mentioned when he was here on earth. Mr. Hughes answered the summons of the grim reaper just four years ago, Jan. 23, 1944. And, even at her advanced age, Mrs. Hughes carried on smiling, and ministering. This good and Godly woman saw so much beauty in life. She wrote poems and had them put into book form. Poems about roses and streams and lovely landscapes and little children. The writer didn't know Mrs. Hughes but some of her friends told us about her splendid personality.about her work and her aid to people that we felt inspired to write this little story in the hope it would be an inspiration to others to so live that when life here on earth is ended, people will remember how sweet it is to live right, live clean, to love God and humanity. True religion was personified in the life of Elizabeth Baird Hughes. She made this world a better place in which to live because she knew the art of getting the most out of life. She knew that to get the most out of life we must put everything into it that is good and beautiful. Mrs. Hughes was born March 17, 1864, and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Dunlap Baird and the widow of the late Brown Hughes. Six sons and four daughters survive her: Staples Hughes, of Bristol, Tennessee; Jimmy, Ronald, Charles and Claude Hughes of Newland, N.C.; Nathaniel, of Hughes; Mrs. D. P. Burleson, of Spruce Pine; Mrs. J. W. Johnson, of Hughes; Mrs. J. P. Hall, of Plumtree; Mrs. William Rice, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee. Twenty-two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive. HUGHES, Garfey "Johnson County News," Thursday, February 22, 1945 Obituaries. He had practiced in Elizabethton for 20 years. HUGHES, James Joseph "Elizabethton Star," Monday, August 21, 1950 JAMES JOSEPH HUGHES James Joseph Hughes, age 62, died in Franklin Clinic Sunday evening following an illness of almost two years. HUGHES, John "Elizabethton Star," Sunday, July 5, 1936 DEATH CLIMAXES LIQUOR BRAWL CLUB INJURES ARE FATAL TO JOHN HUGHES Valley Forge Man Dies In Hospital After Beating. Four Held Companions In Brawl Charged With Murder. Victim of what Sheriff J. M. Moreland described as a drunken Fourth of July brawl, John Hughes, 24, Valley Forge, father of five children, died Saturday evening in the Elizabeth Hospital from a fractured skull and concussion of the brain. Hughes was found on the ET & WSC railroad tracks Saturday morning about 1 a.m. He never gained consciousness. Held in Carter County jail on charges of murder and under bail of $1,00 each were four Valley Forge men who, officials claim, were the other members of a drunken party, which was climaxed by the death of Hughes. The men are Robert Arwood, Charlie Vaughn, Jarvin Johnson and Lloyd Guy. The men will be given a preliminary trial in the court of Magistrate J. A. Smith, Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Funeral services for Hughes will be held at the Christian church at Valley Forge this afternoon at three o'clock with the Reverend John Hall and Rev. John Matthews officiating. Sheriff Moreland stated that while in the intoxicated condition of all the participants of the brawl prevented obtaining a clear picture of the manner in which Hughes death was brought about, blurred facts obtained from the four held residents of Valley Forge, seemed to indicate that Hughes was an object of attack from the other four members of the party, who staged their brawl at the north end of the Doe river bridge at Valley Forge. From all appearances Moreland stated, Hughes had been beaten with a club, whether by all four or by one was not known, then carried to the railroad tracks, at that point and left. Hughes was discovered by the engineer of ET & WNC freight train which was coming to Elizabethton. Sheriff's officers were on the spot investigating within ten minutes. Three of the men were arrested before dawn yesterday. As Hughes, who was said to be drunk also, never gained consciousness, what he could have told remains unknown. Moreland stated that more details were expected as officers continued drilling the four men held in jail. Hughes, an employee of the American Bemberg Corporation, is survived by one son, John Jr.; three daughters, Gloria, Elaine, Wanda; widow, Mrs. Mary Hughes; mother, Mrs. Roy Buchanan, Spruce Pine, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. H. A. Franklin, Valley Forge; brother, Thomas Hughes, Kenninsville, N.C. Interment will be made in the Franklin Cemetery. HUGHES, Mary Ann "Tennessee Tomahawk," Friday, March 7, 1890 DEATH OF A FEMAL HERMIT Mary Ann Hughes, a hermit, who lived at Piney Flats, Sullivan County, was found dead in her hut a day or so ago. She had led this secluded lonely life for many years, although she had several brothers and sisters with independent fortunes who offered her a good home. Her food consisted of what she could pick up, potatoes, pumpkins, apples, etc., while her clothing was of the rudest kind. Shoes she never wore, not even in the coldest weather. She was perhaps 55 or 60 years old, and though the people said she was crazy she could converse on sensible topics. - Morristown Gazette.
