While it doesn't give a list of those who died, it goes into great detail about all the fighting in the area. N.E. Tennessee was apparently a mixed area where alot fought for the Union and many for the South. I was shocked at how violent it was. The book is by Samuel Scott and Samuel Angel and was printed around 1903 so you might be able to find it in a libary. I bought mine at abebooks.com. They carry many out of print books but this one is worth a look. Sandi Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't know why they would be there and not at the Register of Deeds for birth and death records of the early 1900's. Upon arriving at the Health Dept. they refused to let me look at "anything". I explained that I was doing genealogy and that other Register of Deeds in other locations made these records available. They acted like they were shocked and still refused. They told me the only way to get anything was to send to the TN archives and pay for the search. I sure wish someone could straighten this out. I am originally from Carter Co & I don't think that court house keeps any of those records. The health dept doesn't do that for genealogy research either. I've used a guy named Phil McGowan (I think) who will give you a single certificate or do a surname search. I can give you his info if you'd like to contact me directly. There is also another girl who does it & I think I have her info somewhere also. I haven't used her, but know several who have & speak highly of her. Both of these people are faster & less expensive for non TN residents especially. melissablong@windstream.net Thanks, Melissa. -----Original Message----- From: tncarter-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tncarter-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, November 04, 2008 2:52 PM To: TNCARTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNCARTER] Problem Accessing Carter Co. I'm writing about an ancestor that is one of the largest brick walls in my entire family tree. My ancestor, John Chambers, is buried in Green Hill Cemetery. He was a solider in the War of 1812. I know he was born in South Carolina around 1787 and died in Carter County in 1848. He was married to Louvina (often called Lavina or Viney) Jane Chambers, born about 1893 in South Carolina. I have no idea when she died or where is is buried. She was living with her Daughter Rosannah Jane Hendricks, in 1880. They were still in Carter County. I can't find anything on either of them aside from that. John had three children altogether. I am descended from David T. Chambers who married Mary Ann Smith. David T. was in the Civil War and is the father of James Chambers (all of Carter County) who married Julia Davis. Everything is fairly established beyond that point. It is impossible to find anything on John or Lavina. Any help will be much appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
