Do you know if copies of that book are available or do you know if someone has access to it? I'm also interested more in history than lineage - any stories about these folks written down? Lastly, do you know if there are ever any reunions of thse folks. Crook has so many descendants that I thought it may be fun for them all to get together some time! Thanks for your reply. Robert Buckles was born in Yorkshire, England and came to America as a stowaway on a ship in 1719. He married Ann Brown in PA in 1727. Their son, Abraham, had a son named Robert who worked in VA and eventually drifted South to Carter Co., TN. Robert & spouse had about 6 children, one being Mary "Polly" Buckles b.1799 in Sullivan Co., TN. She got pregnant by a man named Cass Hughes and it seems that was the extent of his fathering. Mary gave birth to Robert Campbell Buckles and seems to have raised him herself as I have never found any record of her marriage. He was a Confederate soldier and married 1.Matilda Caroline Taylor 2.Martha Nidiffer. Matilda & Robert had about 7 children, one of which was Mary Buckles b.1850-1930 who married George Washington White. They had several children, one of which was Thomas White, my g-grandfather. That's my line of Buckles. Stoney Creek and surrounding areas have many, many Buckles families still living there--some have even married into my grandmother's side of the family-----wait, is that banjo music I hear???????? God only knows what she had to put up with him. He was apparently very intelligent and a hard worker but took alot out on Matilda. One story I read said he was having a fit one night and threw his shoe into the fire, expecting Matilda to retrieve it for him. She took the poker and shoved it deeper into the fire where it burnt up. The next day, he had to wrap a cloth around his foot and walk to town and get another shoe made. I bet he never threw his shoes in the fire again!! Looks like they stayed married until she died (1888) then 2 years later he married a Martha Nidiffer. I remain a Matilda fan!!!!! Henry C. White b. 1798 in S.C. married Nancy Reeves b. 1801 in S.C. There is no mention concerning Indian heritage, however, being a White myself, have discovered a lot of racial mixing during that time (google "Melungeons") so I would say it is possible. Henry and Nancy had Mary Catherine White 2/6/1831 in Carroll Co., TN. She married Henry W. Hefley b. about 1825 in S. C. They had 4 children: Nancy, William, Thomas, & Martha. Mary then married Elijah Dodd b. 8/14/1830 in Missouri. They married in Arkansas approx. 1864. They had 3 children: Isaac, Anna, & Sarah-all born in Arkansas. Mary died 3/18/1908 in Saline Co., Arkansas. Hope this helps--------------Sandi White Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
