I am going to make a trip to East TN sometime as I have hit the wall on my internet research, and this certainly sounds like a good place to start. My great grandmother, Nellie Swiney, was born in Carter Co, and her father John and grandfather James were both married in Washington Co. John had a brother Noah who moved to Sullivan Co (Bristol) so I bet I still have a lot of distant relatives in the area. I didn't realize East TN was so interesting until I found out my great grand parents were from there. Wish I'd known that on our way back from Gettysburg last year. We spent a lot of time in Confederate cemeteries, so we could have spent some looking for my people. *sigh* I guess I'll just have to make a trip back there and see for myself. Nearby are lots of Sheffield/Shuffield families. My theory is that, when William R.'s wife died, she went to Fayette County, TN to help him with his four children (one of whom was my grandfather). She shares a tombstone with William R.'s wife, Mollie Johns Sheffield (d. 1893), and their daughter Minnie Sheffield (d. 1905). Her side of the stone reads Lurana Purdue, mother of W. R. My Lorraine/Lurena Douglass Sheffield Pardue/Purdue lived in Carter and Johnson counties of Tennessee prior to the Civil War. She is listed as Lurana Sheffield, age 20, born TN, livng with a widow named Sarah Ann Bunton. Sarah's maiden name was Sheffield. The 1860 census of the 10th district of Johnson County, TN, found Sarah remarried and widowed again, now a Potter. Living nearby was Lourana Sheffield, age 31, with two children - my great-grandfather, William R., age 8, and Martha A., age 5. William R. Sheffield, according to his death certificate, was born 6 December 1851 in Carter County, TN to Lorraine Douglass and Marion Sheffield. This is the only mention I have ever found of Marion Sheffield. My brother, a direct-line male descendent of William R., has just completed the DNA testing with Family Tree DNA and we are waiting for the results, hoping that it will open some doors for us. One was killed and I forget if the other made it through or not. But "my" Richard Holden was in the UNION army. He was born in NC around 1820 but was in Tennessee by 1863 where he joined the UNION army. I was trying to find him in the Confederate lists and then I went back to the record I had found on ancestry and there it is stated plain as day UNION. He was in company G of the 13th Tennessee Calvary. I knew there were southerners who fought for the North but this is the first one I've come across in specific research. I know he survived because he applied for a pension. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
