It has been a long time and alot of research since your post. I think that The Caraways and Perkins are related to my line. In the 1910 census for Carter Co, Tn William Caraway is listed without his wife Nancy J Caraway. His 4 youngest children are still in the home, my grandfather Garner being the youngest. Bertha Perkins is listed as a white female servant. Now, the Nancy A. Caraway is not my Nancy J Caraway. 1~ my Nancy J. married a Caraway and your Nancy A was a Caraway when she married. 2~Nancy J was born in July 1876 in TN. Nancy A would have been much older to marry in Wm Riley Perkins. Now the question is how are the two Nancys related? Do you have any idea? I think Nancy J may have died between Garners birth in Dec 1868 and the census in 1910. I cant find a death record for her though. I would also like to find more info on Bertha Perkins who was 19 in the 1910 census. Sorry if this is rambling. Thanks for any help you can provide. Keep in mind if he died in Johnson City where you think he was last living his death certificate would be Washington Co., TN, not Carter. There are other options than death certificates from the govt SInce this was on the Carter Co list I'll assume the person lived in Carter Co. See if newspapers for the time are available. This will usually be on microfilm but often you'll get lucky to find that some dedicated person has kept track of the newspaper obits/death announcements and they are usually available at Historical Society's, Librarys or Archives. Find the funeral homes that were in existence at the time(s). Give them a call to see what they have or if they can give you an idea of where to look. Find a local historian or librarian who knows their 'stuff' in Carter Co. Ask them. They usually, invariably, know what is available and what isn't. You might be surprised what a few phone calls will reveal. Just remember that there is much, much more available in county records than will ever be available online. Joyce Gaston Reece

Thanks for the look up.. I don't know any of these Hopson's. Could it be that some people didn't report deaths because of poverty? Obituaries can be hit or miss for a lot of reasons. It might be a good idea to try and find a death certificate. Try contacting Melissa Barker melissabarker20@hotmail.com She does very good work and might be able to help you get a copy of his death certificate. -----Original Message----- From: tncarter-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tncarter-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of mary scheller Sent: Wednesday, February 03, 2010 4:57 AM To: tncarter@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNCARTER] I have cd..carter county obits Thanks for the look up.. I am researching my family history and it has a path through Carter County. I believe sometime around 1800 Adam Winsell Sr. and Adam Winsell Jr. settled in Carter County. I think Adam Sr. had been a Captain in the revolutionary war in 1777 when living in Loudoun County Virginia where Adam Jr. was born. Adam Jr. served as a Captain in the East Tennessee Militia. He fought at the battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814 under Colonel Allison. He married Sarah Curis while living in Carter County and their first five children were born there from 1811 to 1820. Adam Jr. moved to Indiana sometime between 1820 and 1822 but I believe that Adam Sr. stayed in Carter County for the remainder of his days. I believe he may have passed sometime in the 1830's. I don't know his wifes name but I think she proceeded him in death. I'm hoping to find more info on her and other children they had. Any information regarding my relatives from this era would welcome. (There can be variations of our surname Winsell, Winsel, Wincel, Vincel, Vencil etc.) Thanks in advance for your help, Jeff Winsell My email is jeffyjoe@aol.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Is there an Arthur Hopson? Died 1933 or about. He was about 18 when he died. Father's name was William Washington Hopson, Mother was Ollie Hopson. They lived in Johnson City at the time. I don't know how far back Your CD goes but I am looking for information on my GGGG Grandfather who probably passed on in the 1830's. His name was Adam Winsell Sr. I don't know his wifes name and I belive that she passed on before him, possibly your CD might contain a clue to that information. There are can be alternate spellings of Winsel, Wincel, Vinsel and Vencil. In fact any Carter County surname information from the 1790's on would be appreciated.
