(Thanks Larry!) Hello fellow Listers, Does anyone know the dates for the events described in the interview on Early Carroll Co. History posted by Larry BLACK. I'm trying to obtain any descriptive background info. on life in Carroll Co. during the 1850 - 1890 time period. My g-grandfather, Rev./Dr. Jesse Lee WOOD arrived in Carroll Co., TN sometime in the 1860s. I'm not sure exactly when but Jesse enlisted on 27 Dec 1863 in Co. I, 7th TN Cavalry Reg. U.S. Army at Huntingdon, Carroll Co., TN. Then right after the War, he was living with R. B. T. CARTER and James F. CARTER. On 19 Dec. 1866, there is a record of J. L. WOOD and J. M. DRUMONDS, both of Carroll Co., TN, purchased 126 acres of land for $500. from Isles COOPER which was located in the 8th Civil District of Carroll Co. near McLemoresville. James F. CARTER and R. B. T. CARTER witnessed the transaction before the county registrar on 1 Apr. 1867. Jesse's 1st wife Mary reportedly died Dec 1864 or Jan 1865 during the War and was buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery in an unmarked grave according to an eyewitness who gave a sworn affidavit. I suspect Mary, who was born in TN ca. 1840, may have been a CARTER. They had a daughter, Anna, born in 1860. It is a mystery why he went to live with the CARTER family since he was unable to work due to being disabled from the War. Don't know if there was any relationship or who took care of his daughter while he was in the War. Does anyone know of relavent Carroll Co., TN history during the 1850 - 1890 time period? Thanks for any information. Tn Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Carroll/11608 Surname: Terry, Jett, Luttrell, Tate ------------------------- I have been looking for descendants of Beulah Terry Tate. Beulah Terry was the daughter of John & Sarah Virginia(Jennie) Hansboro Terry. Beulah was born around 1864. I find her in the 1870 Carroll County census living with her parents & brother, William in Trezevant.I have John Terry's application for a Civil War pension and Jennie's application for a widow's pension and they list their daughter's name as Beulah Tate. They also list William Terry's name as Buck Terry. I found on the Carroll County web page, in Granny's Obits, a William J. McDowell who died in 1945 who was first married to Miss Evie White and was later married to Mrs. Beulah Tate. Are there any McDowell researchers out there that can tell me about Mrs. Beulah Tate? Beulah Terry's brother, Daniel C. Terry was my greatgrandfather. Joy Luttrell Tubbs Fort Worth, Texas

I've located LDS records on FamilySearch.com that show Ann T. Kirkland married George S. Jones in Carroll Cnty on 17 May 1868. I believe that this Ann is my gg grandfather's niece. her mother was Nancy Peacock Kirkland, daughter of Wiley and Lefa Peacock. I don't know Mr. Kirkland's first name or anything about him other than he probably died early - before 1850, since Nancy and little Ann show up living with mother Lefa Peacock and family in 1850 Carroll Cnty. census. Would someone be able to look up marriage records to help determine Ann's father's first name (mother would be Nancy Peacock Kirkland). Thanks, Ray Ray Horton [email protected]

Hello Larry, Can you tell me the dates that these events are taking place? If this is not the first of the interview, can you tell me how to obtain the previous segments that were posted? Many thanks! Jack Jesse Lee "Jack" WOOD,III Powell, OH (Formerly from TX) [email protected] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: [TNCARROL] Early Carroll County History Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 07:03:04 From: "larry black" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Continued interview with Esq. Andrew H. NEELY...........Sheriff Andrew NEELY'S father's family came here a few weeks before we did, I think. Settlements in the county were about ten miles apart; there was but one settlement between the Tennessee river and Huntingdon and that was McKee Town, where Buena Vista is now. John WOODS lived at the Terry place, and there were a few other settlers in the same neighborhood. I think that John GWIN and Esq Samuel INGRAM were the first settlers at Huntingdon which was first called Huntsville, but afterwards Huntingdon. I have an idea that it was named in honor of Mimican HUNT who had much to do with the location of the lands in this section of the country. I do not think there was anyone living in Huntingdon in 1822 when we came into this county. Jackson, at that time was being settled and there was a store there. I remember my father going there to get his salt and sugar and coffee. I think that there was a wagon road leading through where Huntingdon now is and on to Jackson. At that time there was considerable moving through the county, but the only bridge in the county was MCKEE'S bridge across Big Sandy and that was only puncheons laid down on logs across the stream. As we came in my father killed a wildcat out near where Dr. MCCALL's farm is, and from that circumstance there was a hill out there for a long time called "wild cat hill"....to be continued
Posted on: Carroll Co. Tn Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Carroll/11602 Surname: ROGERS, CHEATAM ------------------------- My GGG Grandmother was Nancy E. Rogers and some have listed her maiden name as "CHEATHAM" . Nancy E. "Cheatham ? " was born 1775 in North Carolina and married William Rogers who was b. 1770 in Montgomery Co.NC and they had several children. This family moved from Montgomery Co. NC to Carroll CO. TN by 1822. The only Cheatham spelling of this name in and around Montgomery and Anson Co's. NC seems to be either "Chittam" or "Chitham" and one had been in Anson Co. NC with a family, and then died by 1758 leaving a wife and children. The next listing found of this name with the spelling of Chitham was in Mecklenburg Co. NC in about 1763. This name of Phillip Chittam in Anson Co. NC is associated with the names of James McCord, William Henry, and others. Later on some of these same names are also found in Henry Co. as well as Lincoln Co. TN. The Chitham name in Mecklenburg Co. NC is associated with the name of a Nicholas Leeper, and both a William Chitham and John Chitham are listed. If anyone has any information on any of the variety of spellings of the name Chittam, Chitham, Cheatam, or Cheatham which came from these NC counties into mid-TN counties or Carroll Co. TN, please contact me at my e-mail listed below. Tina Rogers Beller [email protected]

The following information was shared by Bob MCCOLLUM and the note attached reads "This was photocopied from old newspaper clippings in Carroll County Tennessee. Tells you what it was like when our ancestors first arrived there." There is no date or other reference. Esq Andrew H. NEELY, now of the seventh district of Carroll County, on being interviewed in Huntingdon, on the 11th of July, 1885, as to his early recollection of the history of Carroll County, proceeded to express himself as follows: I was born in York District, in the State of South Carolina, on the 9th day of March, 1813; consequently was seventy two years of age on the 9th day of last March. My Father, Andrew NEELY, was born in the same district, though he was of Scotch descent. My mother, who's maiden name was STEWART, was of Irish parentage. In 1814, my parents moved to Maury County Tennessee, bringing me with them. There we remained three years and then moved to Hickman County Tennessee where we lived until we came to Carroll County in January, 1822, and settled on the HARRELL tract of land, near McLemoresville, then the foremost place in Carroll County and known as Dougherty's office where the land office was kept by R. E. C. DOUGHTERY. I can call to mind no person living there then except DOUGHTERY, John GWIN, and Abram WHITE. Lewis DEMOSS lived a little ways out on DeMoss' creek where he built a mill, the first that I ever knew of in the county. At McLemoresville the first courts of the county were held and Ed GWIN was the first clerk. We lived there about one year on the HARRELL farm, doing the first clearing that was ever done on the tract. Then moved on Bee Branch, where Arch EVERETT, afterwards lived, stayed here one year, and then went to the place where I have resided ever since. My father entered the place in the Land Office at $3 per acre and through some irregularity in the warrent he had to pay for it twice.......to be continued _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

My GGreat-grandfather was Roysden Layman. (Maybe Robert Roysden Layman). He lived in Carroll County, Tenn. He married Rebecca Shepherd Younger in Sept 1848. His youngest daughter, Martha was my great grandmother and she said that she was born during the civil war while her daddy was away fighting. I would like to find proof of this. I thought that it is interesting that the middle name that your grandfather had was the same as mine. It's not a common name. If I can help you, please let me know and if there is anyone out there that can help me, I would be very greatful.

Tn Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Carroll/11596 Surname: Blake ------------------------- Hi,I am John Paul Hunley, my father is S.P.(Tody)Hunley,his mother was Pearl Blake, daughter of Samuel Blake the son of Benjamin B. Blake the brother of your GGGrandmother Frances Blake Ross. I have a book on the Blakes, written by Blake Williams, called "The Blakes Of South Carroll, Co. Tennessee". In the book, Blake does not go any further back than Benjamin, James, and Frances all born in N.C.. We will have to check N.C. census of 1830. The first record of this family in Carroll, Co. was when Benjamin obtained a license to marry Elizabeth in 12/31/1850. In the Carroll, Co. census of 1860, Benjamin was 40 years old. So he must have been born in 1820 in N.C. E-Mail me with your thoughts and tell be about yourself and family. John Paul Hunley

Looking for more info on my GGG Grandfather Wiley (Willie, Wilie, Wylie) Peacock, b. about 1796 in Wayne Co., NC, 10th and last child of Jesse and Elizabeth Peacock. Jesse was son of John and Patience Raiford Peacock. Wiley married Lefa (b. c 1804) and they had 7 children (the oldest, my GG Grandfather, Dr. Rufus Wilie Peacock) They moved to TN betw. 1832-36. Here's where I lose track of Wiley. Can't find 1840 census records of the family. Rufus was in Henry Co. TN in 1850, and Lefa and the rest of the family in Carroll Co. TN in 1850, but without Wiley. I presume he died in the 1840s. Questions: 1) Does anyone have info on their early years in TN (mid 30s through 1850). Did Wiley move to Carroll Co. with his family? If so, when? 2) Does anyone have info on death date, place, burial of Wiley Peacock. 3) Any descendants of Wiley and Lefa's children, Rufus' siblings (Nancy b 1929, m. Kirkland, dau.
