    3. There were more. I had not finished the list. Since it is under copyright, maybe I should not do that. 1. Re: [TNCANNON] Old Records
    2. Cecelia
    3. Okay, folks. This is what I got from one of my Mormon friends concerning the microfilming of old records. I had just thought that some elderly people who liked to travel around and look at old records, probably took pictures or wrote down the information, in random places they might visit. Dumb me. I learned something-again. If those locations are worried about losing records, have them contact the local Mormon church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - look in the white pages of the phone book)and let them know the situation. Have them ask the church if they would have someone come to preserve the record on microfilm. The LDS church has full time missionaries that do that sort of thing. bob So this is what to do about the records. Someone in that area can contact the proper person or people and relay this information. I'm way down here in Texas and don't know anyone up that way. Hope this helps. After seeing all the things lost in Katrina and other storms, fires, and even vandalism and theft in homes, and even a hailstorm that bent a vent pipe in my utility room. That allowed rain to come under the roof and leaked in the utility room, kitchen, and a bedroom closet. That closet happened to be where we had a lot of old pictures stored. Ruined so many treasured pictures. So, I've been trying to scan, send pictures to relatives via e-mail, put things on CD and send copies to relatives in various places, and put some of them online in places like county Gen Web sites. That way, they can be, hopefully, retrieved in case of computer crashes or other losses. I have a copy of a Civil War era journal, kept by my great-grandfather's sister. Her granddaughter had copies made for her family, then donated the journal and her own notes to the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History. This was actually the sixth journal she kept. The others were lost when she and her husband were moving, by wagon. The wagon overturned in a creek and she lost all the other journals, except the one she had in her purse. I can't help but thinking that I would love to have seen her other journals. She quit writing in the last journal a few days before she died at age 29. Anyway, I feel that preserving old records, newspapers, photos, letters, etc. are very important, and have a sense of urgency due to the fact that so many are fading, deteriorating, or being just plain lost.
