I was just perusing this thread and had a thought - you might try giving a careful look at the original census page image, if possible, as sometimes the handwriting of census takers can be difficult to decipher- I thought maybe the "S" or "L" may have been mistaken one for the other, if you are getting the info from a transcription. Some of those enumerators had elaborately beautiful penmanship, but sometimes, don't you wish they knew about using plain block lettering to fill out forms?
