This is a general genealogy question but since you are the nicest list I belong to, I decided to ask for your help. I obtained my marriage license in Nueces Co., TX but I was actually married at a church in Dallas Co., TX. Since descendant reports only show one line which county should I use where the report says "married on 26 Nov 1982 in ________ County, Texas". Anyone looking up marriage records on the internet in going to find Nueces Co., TX. Thanks Diane Miller
In my opinion, place of marriage is place of marriage, not place of license. Admittedly, this may cause some confusion to someone, later on. Jess
Jess, that is my thinking also. I am working with a cousin that is a stickler for documentation. My nephew obtained his license in one county and got married in a city park in another county. She refuses to put that he was married in the county where the city park is located because there is no official records to prove it. These things must happen all the time, I just wondered how everyone was handling these matters. Thanks for your input. Hmm, this happened to my sister, too. She got legally married in Washington County, AR a day before she had her ceremony in Benton Co., AR. I think it might be best to use the legal place for the county, but then add a note about where the ceremony was. In her case, it's because the J.P. performing the ceremony was a J.P. of Washington Co, rather than Benton County. In Missouri, you can request a license from any county, and then go have your ceremony in any other Missouri county (I think). - Heather http://surgerysupport.uchicago.edu/hblair/ On Mon, 23 Jan 2006, Diane Miller wrote: > This is a general genealogy question but since you are the nicest list I > belong to, I decided to ask for your help. You're right. In Missouri, NO RECORD will be made in the place where the marriage occurred, if it differs from the place where the license was obtained. Missouri's record exist exclusively and officially only in the place where the license is obtained and later recorded. If an official or couple fail to bring the completed license back after the ceremony, a note "No Return" will eventually be put on the record. Likely, many people didn't understand the importance of that last step, even though they had a ceremony somewhere. I imagine the marriage is still legal, just that the date the license was obtained, rather than the marriage date, will be the only official record. When I was transcribing the Christian County, Missouri marriage records, I was on the tenth page of one book (20 marriages) before I found a single marriage which OCCURRED in Christian County, though that is the place the record is made and kept. When only the place of the ceremony is known, researchers may be cused and frustrated by the fact that no legal or official record in the county where the ceremony took place. I signed for my brother and his wife when they were married a few years ago in the Christian County Court house. When the 1994 to 2006 marriages came on line last week, I was looking through the records and saw they were not there. Then I realized that since they were both from Greene County, the license and thus the record will probably be there. Maybe someday there might be a statewide index which would help some, although, of course, people are no more obligated to marry in the state of their residence than in the county where they live. And, laws certainly differ from state to state, I've forgotten which, but I recall some years ago researching in a state where state law in the 18th or 19th century required the marriage to take place in the county where the bride lived. http://www.rootsweb.com/~moccl/marriages.htm http://66.112.71.165/resolution/ heather e blair wrote: > Hmm, this happened to my sister, too.
