    3. Researchers, I have an interest in Mary Ellen SPRY (9 Mar 1871 - 11 Dec 1953) who married Thomas Isaiah PARKER. I have a conflict with his mother's surname. I have both Elizabeth LAMAY (12 Mar 1841 - 06 Jun 1907) and Elizabeth RAINS (12 Mar 1841 - 06 Jun 1907) buried at Gilley Hill Cemetery, Cannon County, Tennessee. Which is the correct surname? Was Elizabeth married more than once? Thanks, John at Sissom dot org John D. Sissom johnsissom@sbcglobal.net sola fida

    3. I think I remember a story out of one of Vance Randolph's books on Ozark folklore. The tale was that a farmer discovered a joint snake and cut him up into bits. He realized that the snake would just reassemble itself and not stay dead, so he took one of the pieces away to prevent that from happening. Well, the snake tried to reassemble itself, and noticing that a piece was missing, substituted a corncob for that piece. He crawled away. - Heather http://hblair.uchicago.edu/ On Mon, 14 May 2007, m m wrote: > Have never heard of Milk Snakes.Have you ever seen or heard of a joint > snake ? 3. For all "yall" that plan to return to Cannon County during the Memorial Day holiday this year, you're in luck! The earlier poke salet crop was frozen out with the "late freeze" we had during early April. The second crop is now up and growing well. There will be those who bring this delicious meal to the reunions and dinners that will be planned around this holiday. Be sure to ask about it as many folks here still prepare this nature's delight. By the time you return home, you should have at least a half dozen different recipes for preparing it. Share them with family and friends when you get back home! Poke salet can also be frozen to enjoy year round. Jess has pretty accurately described the process in his posting below. The plant stalk has also been used to make a cucumber like food and I have heard of it also being battered and fried like okra. This native plant no doubt was introduced to our settler ancestors by the Indians who developed many different ways of preparing it for consumption. The plant is poisonous, however, and the key to safely eating it is in the multiple blanchings you must put it through as it is cooked. When cooked correctly, and smothered in boiled eggs and vinegar, it is hard to beat the taste of this southern delicacy. Enjoy! The larger leaves are strong tasting & most folks don't like them. It is my understanding that the purple "poke berries" are actually the only poison part of the plant. Not to birds, though. They love them. Cook the "shoots" a couple of times and pour the water off. Some people cook it with eggs and make a kind of "scrambled combo". There are recipes on the internet. Some look pretty good. Jess

    3. Gm cuz, yes that is a legless lizard, glass snake or joint snake. I think there is another one that is a little diffrent in color. To the best of my memory they get to about 18 inches or so in length.and appear to have small scales instead of a skin like a snake. don markum heather e blair <h431@uchicago.edu> wrote: Oh yeah, my cat used to catch those little lizards -- well, she'd catch the tail and the rest would escape. 3. My grandmother Margaret Irene McLain gave me this basic 2 Egg Recipe in 1964 when I married. She used it for every cake she cooked. Basic 2 Egg Cake 1cup melted butter 2 Eggs 3 cups self rising flour 1 cup milk 2 cups sugar 1 talp, vanilla Coconut Cake Use Basic Cake Recipe Bake 30-35 minutes in 350 degrees oven in 2 well greased, floured round pans For Icing get one fresh coconut and take a big nail & hammer the nail in the eyes of the coconut.Drain the milk in a glass.Crack the coconut .Cut coconut from outer shell, then peel that black inner skin off.Grade on hand grader til fine.{ My grandmother died in 1970.My Mother & I did it this way until 2 years ago.] Now instead of hand grating,I stick it in the food processor.
