My conjecture is by process of elimination but it is the best I've seen. Joe
Don't forget about Joe's Place located on the left side of the square across from the courthouse. They were recently written up in Country Magazine. They have great down home cooking and a big plus.. a "liars table" of which my husband is a "member". Someone has even made a "liar's plack" that sits on the table and we jokingly turn it toward the one we think is telling the biggest one! Joe, Not sure if you are talking to me or not (Linda King from Woodbury) but most of my info on Silas came from our local Clyde Basham. I have not spent much time on my Parker line, I am ashamed to say. The Parkers and Bushes mix in my family. My paternal grandmother was a Bush and my maternal grandmother was a Parker. By the way, I have been trying to call Clyde but haven't reached him yet. Even called a relative and left message but haven't heard from them either. Hi Frances, I don't have much on this family but my great grandmother was Dave Cawthon's second wife. Her 1st husband, James McBride, died leaving her with 2 small children. She married Dave Cawthon (after the death of his 1st wife) and he helped raise my grandmother, Sarah McBride (Sissom) and her sister, Thirsa McBride (Gilley). My mother used to talk about Dave's daughters, Anna, Adaline and Mandy. I would be interested in more info on this family if you are willing to share. Thanks! Me, too! Y'all have a good time, and learn lots! It's hard to find really good pie anymore. I thought I would just bake and cook away, once I retired. But, almost everything I have tried has flopped. I can't remember how my mama made pie crust, and the recipes I have tried just don't work. Frozen pie crusts are just awful, to me. I got up at 4 a.m. one morning, to make scones for my grandson's breakfast. What a mess! At 10 a.m., long after he had gone to school, I was still trying to fight with that dough! Stickiest mess I ever saw. Much worse than clay that I used at school when I was teaching. Finally, after adding much flour, I got something that I could handle, and baked it. They were edible, but I decided I would not try that recipe again! We had ladies who were such good cooks back home, and I grew up watching, listening to all their hints. The last one of those died at age 105 recently. Before she died, I asked her if she had a recipe for her neighbor's angel food or coconut cake. She said they were at her home (she was living in a nursing home), but she told me about her secret for making sweet potato pie, which was her own specialty, at our last school reunion. (We're having another one in a couple of weeks. We sure will miss her, and a lot of older folks. Sure feels strange to be "the older generation", now! The older folks have really disappeared since we started having these. There are still some from my father's generation, but their numbers have really dwindled. It was so interesting , when we first started having these all school reunions, when my grandfather was still alive at 96, and to meet people I had heard him, and my father, uncle, and others in town, talk about. I'm going to take some CDs of my pictures, and a lap top, and hope that some there can help to identify some of the people in the photos that I don't have a clue about. We should try to get some stories written down, too. Now that we are the older generation! It would be really interesting to see where my grandmother, Emma Arnett Miles, and her parents, Rhoda Carolyn Melton and Dr. James E. Arnett lived, along with the other children. I haven't gotten into the Melton's, or Dr. Arnett's first wives and their families. And it would be such a big thrill if I could find out Dr. Arnett's death and burial information! I feel sure that there must be a newspaper obit or something. He died just prior to Aug.1, 1913, when a deed detailing the disposition of his property was signed by his widow and children. Hope everyone has some good food, good visiting, and lots of success in finding information. Cecelia >I wish I were there to go to Joe's. Thanx, Danny, no problem. I'm bringing one. I just thot it would be possible the library had one handy. Joe
Joe, I asked Peggy Tate regarding a projection screen. Her response follows. I will check around and see if we can come up with one. If not, like Peggy suggests, the wall may have to suffice in this case. All the other amenities appear to be available. Best Regards, Danny Nichols Danny, Sorry we don't have a projector screen.(White walls). We do have extension cords, electric power, air condition, tables and chairs, name tags, water and 2 bathrooms. I am making a sign to put out in the front yard with an arrow pointing to the basement door. My most recent Cannon County ancestor was my 3g-grandfather, Martin L. Blair (1827-1865?). He married Sarah Turney (1831 - betw 1880-1890) who was from nearby DeKalb county. His brother, William Blair (1823-1863), married Sarah's sister Elizabeth (1827-1889). The two couples left Cannon County about 1848 for Searcy County, Arkansas. The Turney sisters had some uncles and aunts living there already. I don't know why they moved, and I speculate it was more "pull" than "push" -- nice land available in Arkansas. Do other people on this list have ancestors who moved to the Ozarks around this same time? - Heather http://hblair.uchicago.edu/ On Sat, 19 May 2007 Rhemann3566@aol.com wrote: > With regards to migration of families from Cannon County - I read a book > years ago on the subject of migration. I have had both. Enjoyed both, until hours later !! Do they still have graveyard cleaning at the Cherry Cemetery ? When I was young in the 1960's, I went with my Aunt there. Just remember going down this gravel road and the Cemetery was on the right. Seeemed like it went dongrade. There was a house across the street and these young children watched us from the porch. Mostly just picked up the sticks and trash paper. Had a picnic basket with lunch in it. Seems like it was a gathering for my Aunts and Uncles there. Some lived in Cannon. Most lived in Bedford County. My Aunt died in 1970. She thought it was a BIG Thing to go shopping in downtown Murfreesboro or Tulahoma. She had only been to Nashville once in her lifetime. You would have thought the way she talked, she had been to New York. Made these little cakes called tea cakes. I think they were made from Vanilla Cake Mix. I can still taste them. I remember when they buried her, they did not have a vault. They put the casket in the ground and then they put gavelnized sheets over the top of it. Like half circles used indrain pipes. My uncle said it would keep the dirt in place and keep the grave from sinking later on since it would not rust. Ever seen that done down there ? Danny! Do you know if a projector screen will be available at the library? If not, I can bring mine. You advise that tables are available. How about electric power, extension cords? Joe
To Joe and All, There are two areas available to visitors at the Adams Library in Woodbury. The Genealogy Room is upstairs and is small. For those wishing to do research in source materials available at the library, the Genealogy Room is where you will want to go and the policies pertaining to entry are as explained in the posting I made of Peggy Tate's e-mail. For those wishing to meet and share, the basement of the library is being made available. This is a much larger room and will be equipped with tables, chairs, etc. to make it convenient for those wishing to work with others and share what they have. This room is also accessible directly from the outside by a walkway that connects to the main street. (College Street). I would suggest maybe entering here first if you have notebooks, lap tops, etc. You could leave them in the basement for later use and then visit the Genealogy Room if you wish and then return to the basement for what meetings you have planned. Just remember, the basement is the "Meet and Share" area for these days. The Genealogy Room (upstairs) will be for those patrons who wish to see what the Adams Library has available and to do actual research. Please note an additional e-mail from Peggy Tate below: The basement room is being offered for what ever researchers plan to swap or show and tell on Saturday and Monday. Entrance can be made down the side walk under the magnolia tree without going upstairs first. Hours are 9 - 4 Peggy Wilson Tate You will find the Genealogy Room is not condusive for a public gathering. It is a research room. The basement is being made available for this event and is large enough to accommodate a good number of people. I'm looking forward to meeting those that attend on Saturday. Have a great trip and I hope you enjoy visiting Cannon County! I would almost have to believe this is my guy.In the Cannon Co.census his name was spelled Murfree as it sounded to the census taker..Would there be Immigration records in Cannon Co.Boy that Irish man got around. He did not get here untill 1851.By 1860 he was married to Elizabeth Brown who in 1850 was married to Issac Brown in Warren Co.Issac had to have died and James married her by 1853 as in 1860 They have a 4 year old child together living in Cannon Co.I have never found a marriage record for James Murphrey -Murfree & Elizabeth Manus Brown.
