    1. [TNCANNON] Lug Nuts
    2. Kevin Morgan
    3. That note about the lug nuts reminded me of something. This sales man was going down a country road and had a flat. He pulled off the road as much as possible since it was on the driver's side. He got the lug nuts off and put them in the hubcap. He removed the tire and proceeded to the rear of the vehicle to get the spare. Just about that time a truck came by and hit the edge of the hubcap and the lugnuts went flying. The Salesman went looking for them and could not find a one of them. So he put the spare on and just waited. When he walked around the vehicle, he noticed a sign on the fence running along the road. It said State Mental Hospital. He looked on down the way and noticed a gentleman hanging over the edge of the fence from the oppisit side. Eventually the man worked his way down the fence towards the car. The Salesman tried not to notice him. Finally the man said " Hey, you having problems ? " The Salesman told him what happened. The man replied " Well if you take one lug nut from the other three wheels and put it on the spare you just put on, that will get you down the road safely until you can get more. " The Salesman did it and was amazed !!! He turned to the other man and said, " Hey, if you are so smart, how come you are in that place ? " The man said, " Hey, I might be crazy, but I am not stupid ! " Kevin

    1. [TNCANNON] Hi Folks
    2. Marie Clayton
    3. Interesting dialog going on. I just had to jump in. I have made lye soap when we lived in CA. It turned out pretty good. I made it nearly every year while our four sons were growing up. If they happened to get into poison oak or ivy they used lye soap to wash with. It helped to keep the poison from spreading so bad. I also made home made bread, all types, butter, buttermilk, yogart, cheese. I loved making cheese. Some cottage cheese, but mostly hard cheeses. I baked with the cheeses, and we ate it plain also. I made kraut with my mother in law after we moved to MO. We made it every year. I canned all our vegetables. Also froze some. Made freezer tomatoe sauce. It was really good, had grated carrots in it. Used it in lots of dishes. In California my grandpa cured olives, and I have his recipe. I helped one of our neighbors cure some a couple of years while we were there. I don't do much of any of these things anymore since our sons are all grown. But enjoyed it while I did. I've never had homemade hominy, but sounds good. My mother in law had told me about her making it when she was younger. I made butter with a mixer, or even a jar of cream shook until it thickened. One of our sons came home from school telling how the teacher had made some, so we tried it. It worked just fine. I sent for recipes to make different types of cheese. Even made goat cheese. My sons all liked goats milk as two of them were alergic to regular cows milk. We used goats milk for every thing. Sorry to have rambled on so, but you all got me started. Have a good evening. Marie Clayton

    3. Yes, I've tried Ben and Jerry's. Still like Blue Bell better. Ben and Jerry's is more expensive here, and comes in smaller containers, for one thing. There was a delicious ice cream that is put out during football season here. The containers are in the colors of the favorite area football teams, and they have little chocolate footballs with caramel inside. They have maroon and white for Texas A&M, and orange and white for Texas University. At least that is here. I kept a couple of Aggie containers to put paintbrushes in. Thought of putting some flowers in them! You can't beat fresh peach ice cream, or homemade fresh peach, or peach and vanilla. I like that orange and vanilla ice cream when it is really hot. Good in ginger ale, or in 7up, too. Cecelia in Texas > Obviously many of you folks have not tried "Ben & Jerry's" Ice Cream. > Available most everywhere that I know. Try it. You'll like it. Beats "Blue > Belle", Borden's and even Purity (in my opinion) > > > Jess Lewis >

    2. I used to make kraut every summer. Just salt, water and chopped cabbage. I will try and find my receipe but one thing for sure after you put it in the jars & put the lids on you need to set them in a dark and preferrably cool place like a basement. Before I had a basement I set them under the floor away from any light. Be sure and sit the jars on several layers of newspapers. When it starts to ferment it will ooze out from under the lids and down on the floor. My mother and father-in-law taught me how to cut it with an old timey kraut knife (big blade on end of a stick) but the last few years I just put it in the blender or chopper. Works just as good and much quicker and easier. I had an interesting experience with Blue Bell when living in Hillsboro, TX. I got a double-dip cone at a service station that had a few eating items, including a Blue Bell ice cream station.. I was avidly eating my cone when my tongue hit something rough.. I stopped and pulled on the item. It was a piece of broken metal.. about 3/4 inch by 1 inch... It looked like a piece of a wrench or an odd shaped metal item. I showed it to the clerk and she just gave me this look of doubt.. and said it couldn't have been from their ice cream, however she did take it and give it to the Blue Bell company.. I got a letter back apologizing saying that that wasn't possible (HUH????).. but they were enclosing a coupon for me to get more ice cream.. The interesting thing is... there was NO coupon in the envelope.. Ugh! So.. I've had a "thing" aabout ever eating their ice cream again... weird I know, but guess that's just me.. I like DREYER's Ice Cream.. especially their Sundae Cone.. It tastes like a old fashioned drumstick.. SO good! Ymmm! 1. [TNCANNON] Cannon reunion
    2. Joe Sissom
    3. All of y'all got home y'day before we did --- an anticipated 11 hr drive became 14: blowout, lugnut caps broken (not even the hiway patrolman that helped us had seen this), freeway closed becasue of wreck, hard rain..... Gilley Hill, perhaps all of Cannon Co., is in a time warp. How long has it been since you have seen a store w/ a screen door? Joe's has one. My Sissom cousins from GA, 1st timers: "Joe I thot you were exaggerating just to get us to come, but you downplayed it." Another comment: "This is not like a cemetery. It has benches." "I've never seen a cemetery like this. It is a real celebration." And how about the family that insists on mounding the graves, something very new to me, and upsetting to some members of the the same family. I am told that this comes out of the Church of Christ via scripture, "Don't let the grass grow on my grave." I have written a very devout C of C member/cousin for her comment. The sharing sessions had fewer people than I had hoped, more than I expected, some from TX, IN, GA, AR, SC, NC. The noise level at times approached that of an airport. 12 nano seconds after I arrived, being met by Danny Nichols (who was invaluable in putting things together for the meeting), we found we had common Fuston ancestors --- as does the librarian's husband! I didn't get any Byford help, but did get insights on Bashams. My cousin Jerry, born & raised in Cannon, never involved in research, visited w/ us Mon. and had lunch at Joe's. Before he left, he told me, "Joe, I'm beginning to see why you like this. All of these people are so interested in what is, and what was, here, where they came from. They have asked me so many questions. I hope they all come back and I'll take them anywhere." FYI, on my 1st trip to Cannon some years ago, I wanted to go to the Espy cave (goes by many names) which was the site of may family gatherings) and Jerry took me, having to scramble up & down one of the steep ridges to do it. Now if only Woodbury had a motel!!! I hope those of you who weren't there are realizing that those of us who were are trying to make your mouth water. Yes, I found new cousins, but most of all, I found some new FRIENDS. This was more about friends than genealogy, I guess. Jeanine & I will be back next year. Thanks to all of you who contributed to a marvelous experience. Joe

    2. Putting a plate and a rock on top of the kraut, reminded me of my mother fixing eggplant. She would peel it and slice it and set it on a plate with another plate on top and then the flatiron on top of that and then let it sit for several hours. Then she would dip it in a beaten egg and flour and fry it. Why the plate and weight on top. I have ask several people and they all say they never heard of this. Can anyone tell me why? Thanks. 3. I think you can make a float out of most any kind of drink and ice cream. We've used Coke, Dr. Pepper, Root Beer, Big Red, etc. When I was on one successful diet, many years ago, I used to drink diet Shasta. That was back in the 1960s. They had a good taste to them. But, when they took out the sweetner that worked, and replaced it with the government approved stuff, it gave me a splitting headache after a couple of sips, and the taste was bad, too. All the diet things now give me a splitting headache and a bad taste in my mouth. I absolutely ruined my stomach on the Dr. Pepper and boiled egg diet! Even starvation doesn't work for me. My doctor tore up the diet he prepared for me, and said I don't eat half that much. Some people are just meant to weigh a certain thing. I blame the weight on birth control pills that the doctor insisted I had to take. I ganed over 100 pounds in 3 months on his "safe" pills. They were soon taken off the market as they permanently elevated weight, blood pressure, and something else. A different doctor told me to throw those things out. I even have gained weight in the hospital on a strict diet! I've decided to just eat what I can, and not worry about it. (Lots of things don't digest since I had the old gall bladder out, have trouble swallowing and chewing, at times. The one thing that goes down well, when I am having esophogal spasms, is ice cream, and that seems to calm it down so that I can eat my food. Those times, I have to have my dessert first!) Cecelia >I have never heard of DR Pepper F;pats but used to like Coke > Floats.Coke over Vanilla Ice Cream.Since I am now diabetic can not drink > Coke of any kind now. Hate the taste of Diet Coke > >
