It appears that the article relates to the "issuance of a birth certificate", NOT a copy of an existing birth certificate, which is what "genealogist and researchers" are ACTUALLY interested in. Maybe this is related to the "issuance of a driver's license" simply by sliding a few hundred bucks under the table issue that has made Tennessee Headlines recently. Let's don't get overly alarmed by a few articles by people just trying to make a headline. Surely common sense will prevail, in the end. It usually does, after the smoke has cleared the air. What say we drop this and move on. Jess
This is why it would be helpful for us to see if the Terrorism Prevention Act really contains harsh restrictions on access to birth and death certificates that would be hard on genealogists. Poking around on Google, I think this might be the final version of the act: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c108:4:./temp/~c108lizdqO:: This looks more comprehensive at the "Federation of American Scientists" (I don't know who they are, so I can't vouch for them.) http://www.fas.org/irp/crs/RL32722.pdf On page 2: "In addition because many of these provisions only deegate regulatory authority to federal agencies, several concerns that were raised during the legislation's deliberation, including access to birth certificates by genealogists or other historical researchers, are not specifically addressed by the statutory language, and will likely be the subject of agency action. On page 11-12: "In addition to the security measures, the Secretary is instructed to establish requirements for "proof and verification of identity as a condition of issuance of a birth certificate, with additional security measures for the issuance of a birth certificate for a person who is not the applicant." Concern has been expressed that this provision may have an impact on genealogical and other historical research involving access to birth records. However, what exactly that impact will be appears dependant on precisely how the regulation is ultimately drafted. For example, it is possible that the regulations could be drafted in such a way that will make it difficult for genealogical researchers to obtain birth certificate without express permission or authorization from the person or persons whose records they are seeking... While it appears possible for the Secretary to draft a regulation that both complies with the statute and provides an exception or special procedure for genealogical and historical access, this result is by no means guaranteed, nor is it mandated by the plain language of the statue." So maybe a nice, polite letter to the President, and your Senators and representative would be a good thing to do. We can also write the governors of our states to ensure access to birth and death records. - Heather http://surgerysupport.uchicago.edu/hblair/ On Wed, 1 Mar 2006, Charles Page wrote: > Angie, Propaganda is powerful! Jess, my last response. Lest you think that I am a trouble maker, let me tell you what is going on in my life. At the beginning of this year I had an awesome encounter with Christ that changed my outlook completely. I have a new zeal to be a bold witness for Christ. I have been a sheep seeking comfort from other sheep. Now I am a sheep seeking the company of wolves to tell them about the saving grace of God. A sheep is a breath away from being a meal, because this is a wolf eat sheep world. The only defense that a sheep has is to talk boldly. Be wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove. My prayer is "Lord teach me what that means, that is what I want to be." I was suddenly drawn into the debate to defend President Bush (actually I had more important things to do than get involved in this) but there I was and was suddenly banned so quickly from the Warren board. . It was like the Lord said, "you want to be bold, assert yourself into this issue" This is not the religious right coming to George Bush's defense, but just me testing the waters of boldness. This is not totally off topic since it is about genealogy, being part of the family of God. The LDS is involved in genealogy, why can't I!!! Charles et.al., You will find things a bit more "laid back", here, than on the TnWarren list. A limited amount of "off topic" is tolerated, even a clean joke or two, from time to time. Just don't get into personal issues or bashing, too heavily, or run it into the ground.. We are, after all, supposed to be primarily about Cannon Co. area history and Genealogy. Also, if you've got something to sell, or know of something for sale, that is genealogy related and something some folks might be interested in, do tell us about it. People can make up their own mind as to what to do with the info. Some lists will publicly try to humiliate you by name, immediately de-list you FOREVER, without any cautions or warnings, and won't allow any protests or discussion on the matter, whatsoever, upon penalty of being de-listed yourself. Barney Fife would have been proud. "You gotta nip it in the bud... nip it..." :^)) You won't find that here, except under extreme instances, and a warning or two. BTW, I followed the link to the Bush bashing (see subject) and found some interesting side links. This group seems to target (and color) anything remotely connected to the current administration in Washington. They have some interesting "reporter tutoring" downloads that seem to encourage changing, fluffing and emphasizing certain key words. After tailoring, you might not recognize what you would have sworn that you just said. Strange world that we live in. Just my thoughts. Now back to genealogy :^) Jess Lewis .... TnCannon List Adm.

Angie, Propaganda is powerful! Fred, allow me to go off subject also. Don't want it to effect what we can get earlier than the census we are allowed! 1930 Amazing what we are allowed in other (Sweden) countries compared to here. No idea which is better, but with the US paranoia, I think I prefer here, just don't want to get too crazy. Too crazy is what the US is starting to look like. Thanks to everyone who responded! Obviously, I have the wrong Sarah Duke! Does my Sarah sound familiar to anyone? She was born 25 Mar 1871 and died 18 Jan 1918. She married John H Beason on 15 Mar 1871 in Cannon County. In 1880, they were in Davidson County and by 1900, they were in Houston County. Any ideas would be appreciated!! Carl - thanks for the information on the book. I haven't talked to Sam Wonders about the Morgan book - I assume we are talking the same book? I contributed what I have on the Duke family. I think the Morgan book is going to really bring new info to a lot of descendants and I'm looking forward to getting a copy.
