I used to think some things he said were German words, like "gunwadden" for bread, "cush" for dressing, "Pootie" for turkey, etc. That was when I was small. There was also "skyjuice" for water. Then, later, I saw "We've Never Been Licked", an old movie about Texas A&M with Robert Mitchum, Noah Beery Jr., etc., and heard them using those terms in the movie. 3. This is great; a keeper! An Old Farmer's Advice: * Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong. * Keep skunks and bankers and lawyers at a distance. * Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. * A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. * Words that soak into your ears are whispered...not yelled. * Meanness don't jes' happen overnight. * Forgive your enemies. It messes up their heads. * Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. * It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge. * You cannot unsay a cruel word. * Every path has a few puddles. * When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. * The best sermons are lived, not preached. * Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway. * Don't judge folks by their relatives. * Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. * Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time. * Don't interfere with somethin' that ain't botherin' you none. * Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance. * If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'. * Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got. * The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin'. * Always drink upstream from the herd. * Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment. * Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in. * If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around. * Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

    3. 23rd Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Trousdale, Sumner County, Tennessee, in August, 1861. Organized with ten companies, it was consolidated into eight after the Battle of Shiloh. The men were recruited in the counties of Maury, Smith, Lawrence, DeKalb, Bedford, Rutherford, Marshall, Perry, Cannon, and Coffee. After being involved in the conflicts at Shiloh, Munfordville, and Perryville, it was assigned to B.R. Johnson's Brigade and in November, 1863, consolidated with the 17th Regiment. The regiment participated in the Battles of Murfreesboro and Chickamauga, moved to Knoxville, then was ordered to Virginia. Here it fought at Drewry's Bluff, took its place in the Petersburg trenches, and was active in the Appomattox Courthouse Campaign. It took 570 effectives to Shiloh and lost twenty-six percent of the 201 at Perryville, twenty-three percent of the 272 at Murfreesboro, and fifty-four percent of the 181 at Chickamauga. On April 9, 1865, there were 4 officers and 52 men at the surrender. The field officers were Colonels Richard H. Keeble, Mathias Martin, James F. Neill, and Horace Ready; Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cantrell; and Majors John G. Lowe and George H. Nixon.

    3. I just want to make note about Jess Lewis. Jess is the Administrator of the Cannon County GenWeb Site. He donates his time, etc to keep this up at his cost. He also keeps all of us straight !!! Thank you Jess ! One of the most valuable gifts I have received is the Cemetery Book, which was done by Jess. When some of you ask about a certain person, that is where I look first. It also gives references to spouses, etc. It is a very valuable item to have. I think Jess still has some of these left for sale. Again Jess, thanks for all the good work. I know new people see you on the Rootsmail and did not know who you were. Kevin Morgan

    3. Maybe this would also help you. Tommy Allen [email protected] Descendants of: Baxter B. Dickens 1 Baxter B. Dickens b. Circa 1797 North Carolina d. 06-21-1860 Coffee County, Tennessee m. Nancy Holt m. 02-17-1820 Rutherford County, Tennessee b. Circa 1798 d. 08-14-1855 Cannon County, Tennessee [daughter of Fielding Holt and Frances (Fanny) Parsley] An article on Prominent Tennesseans states that B. B. Dickens was a farmer in moderate circumstances, a justice of the peace, and an elder in the Christian Church. He was a native of North Carolina and came with his widowed mother from that state when he was fifteen years old. He lived in Warren and Bedford counties in Tennessee until he was grown, after which he settled in Rutherford County, Tennessee. He was a man of firm character, of conscientious conduct, and sterling integrity. He married in Rutherford County, Tennessee to Nancy Holt (daughter of Fielding Holt), a farmer in Rutherford County, Tennessee, which is now in Cannon County, Tennessee. He was by birth a Virginian, one of three brothers raised in Henry County in the "Old Dominion", He raised a family of eight children and died in 1860 at the age of sixty-five. It stated that his father was William Dickens of North Carolina but does not give the name of his mother. It named a brother of his father who settled in Jackson County, Tennessee. The article named Baxter's sons, Dr. James H. Dickens, born June 11, 1823, J. F. Dickens, and W. B. Dickens. Records of the Bean's Creek Christian Church state "Bro. Baxter Dickens moved from Cannon County, to Beans Creek. He was a strong pillar and support of the truth and done much and lasting good in sowing the seed of the Kingdom where ever he sojourned or traveled, which fell gently and quietly alike in the various grounds as described by the Savior in the parable of the sowers" 2 Caroline Dickens b. 11-15-1821 Tennessee m.
