    1. Confederates Buried in Indianapolis
    2. L Brewster
    3. Kevin - If you go to Crown Hill cemetery, you will find a section of Confederate monuments that was dedicated about 1993. *Somewhere* I have pictures and a newspaper article from the Indianapolis Star telling all about the relocation. There are many names on the monuments, and each state is represented. I went to the ceremony, in which the President General of the United Daughters of the Confederacy spoke, as did several dignitaries from Indiana. A vial of soil from each state was buried at the base of the monuments. When the Star Spangled Banner was played by a military band, everyone stood. Riderless horse and caisson went by, and the band played *Dixieland*. I was the only one who stood up (not that I'm proud of my southern heritage or anything). Soon, people began to stand as the song was played and a group of re-enactors marched by. I was very proud of our southern heritage that day. Phillips, born 1846 near Woodbury to David H. & Mary Margaret (Brawley/Bralley) Phillips, was in the Confederate Tennessee 5th. I still own the farm where I grew up and which he bought in 1899 in Searcy County, Arkansas. His tombstone in the Western Grove Cemetery is those of his children and grandchildren, including my father's, and I SHOULD have noticed what the shape of that military tombstone was trying to tell me. It's top was rounded, unlike the pointed tops of Confederate tombstones. But, until another cousin got his military record, it didn't sink in that he fought for the Union. That unbalanced my previous perception that I had six direct ancestors who fought for the Union and six direct ancestors who fought for the Confederacy - the final talley is seven Union, five Confederate. I suppose I should have also taken the hint that Hugh's brother, born 1862, was named William Lincoln Phillips.

    3. I think a lot of the Cannon County men joined the Union Army a few years after it began and the County was occupied by their troops. It was a terrible war for both sides. I think we should remember all those men, Union and Confederate, who fought for their rights and beliefs. My pet project here in Indianapolis, is finding out who the Confederates are buried at our Crown Hill Cemetery. During the War, there was a Camp Morton here. Many Confederate Prisoners was held here and died here, over 1600 men. They were buried in a City Cemetery. About 1930, the City was expanding and the people buried in the City Cemetery ( which sat just about 1/2 mile from our RCA Dome ),were removed. All the Confederate Soldiers remains were put in 25 wooden boxes and reburied at Crown Hill, which is the 3 rd largest cemetery in the U.S. A Monument, which had stood at the City Cemetery was not taken to Crown Hill and moved to a Park southeast of downtown Indianapolis. It had all the names and units these soldiers were from. The list was taken off there. It will take me a long time, but it is a project. I would say one third are soldiers from Tennessee. Most were taken after Ft. Donelson or Shiloh. I use all records available, especially the 1860 Census, etc to find out who they were. The sad thing is, a lot of them were very young 16-20 years old. Many left young wives and children at home never to return. Another thing is, I had found a lot of soldiers who were born in foreign countries and fought here. Many were from France who served from Louisiana. Found many who were from Ireland. Kevin Morgan

    3. Sometime when you have nothing better to do, check out the 1890 Tennessee Census of Civil War Vets. (Sistler & Co. 1978). You will be amazed at the number of UNION Vets. that have a Cannon Co. mailing address. Very surprising, considering that on the final vote for secession, Cannon Co. went some 75-80% for joining the South. But, you will find their graves scattered all over the county. Several at Gilley Hill Cem., near Hollow Springs, in Southern Cannon Co., to Sycamore Church Cem., on the Dekalb Co. line. My ggrandfather was a Union Vet., from Hollow Springs (5th Cal.), and is buried at Gilley Hill. One of his younger brothers followed him a few years later & was killed at the Battle of Nashville. Over the years, the family had forgotten the younger brother, but he was in the Cannon 1850 & 60 census, then just disappeared. I knew he would have been at a "prime" age, so I kept looking. Finally found his war records, with instructions to return his personal effects to "Arch Lewis, Hollow Springs, Cannon Co., TN." He was initially buried in Nashville City Cemetery, near Ft. Negley, (4th Ave S.) and war causalities eventually almost filled the cemetery, so no space was left for the locals. Shortly after the war, all union vets were removed from that Cemetery and other local cemeteries and re-interred at Spring Hill National Cemetery, near Madison. They have an excellent indexing of records there (now online) and was very easy to locate his gravesite. I once lost a sale of a Cannon Cemetery book, to a young man who proudly proclaimed that his great grandpa was in the Civil War and if he was in the book, he would buy one. You can't imagine the shocked looked on his face when we found his ggrandpa with a Union Army Tombstone!! My Union Vet. married a Cannon Co. girl, who had strong southern sentiments. Her people are buried at Gilley Hill also. I have often wondered just how many times that the war fought all over again, at family reunions. Jess Lewis

    3. There were probably many Cannon Cty residents who joined the Confederate Army in neighboring counties. My ggrandfather, Joseph Baltimore and his brother Phillip, were soldiers who were at one time members of Co E, 2d Bn, Tenn Inf. No proof, but I believe they joined in McMinnville, Warren Cty. The only notable record of my ggrandfather is the time he went AWOL. Additionally, did any Cannon Cty men join the Union Army? The men were from the counties of White, Bledsoe, Warren, Van Buren, Putnam, and Smith. It joined the Army of Tennessee after the Battle of Murfreesboro and was placed in General M.J. 3. One of the Best Sites for looking up Civil War Soldiers is: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ You can use the Soldiers Site here or the Regiment. You do not have to fill in all the fields. You will see a lot of names such as B.B. King and if you look on down the list, sometimes it will list the full name. Like Bob Bruce King. Both are the same person, but listed twice. Example: William Phillips (First_Last) Regiment Name 23 Tennessee Infantry. (Martin's Reg't.) Side Confederate Company H Soldier's Rank_In Private Soldier's Rank_Out Private Then click on his Regiment and it gives the History: 23rd Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Trousdale, Sumner County, Tennessee, in August, 1861. Organized with ten companies, it was consolidated into eight after the Battle of Shiloh. The men were recruited in the counties of Maury, Smith, Lawrence, DeKalb, Bedford, Rutherford, Marshall, Perry, Cannon, and Coffee. After being involved in the conflicts at Shiloh, Munfordville, and Perryville, it was assigned to B.R. Johnson's Brigade and in November, 1863, consolidated with the 17th Regiment. The regiment participated in the Battles of Murfreesboro and Chickamauga, moved to Knoxville, then was ordered to Virginia. Here it fought at Drewry's Bluff, took its place in the Petersburg trenches, and was active in the Appomattox Courthouse Campaign. It took 570 effectives to Shiloh and lost twenty-six percent of the 201 at Perryville, twenty-three percent of the 272 at Murfreesboro, and fifty-four percent of the 181 at Chickamauga. On April 9, 1865, there were 4 officers and 52 men at the surrender. The field officers were Colonels Richard H. Keeble, Mathias Martin, James F. Neill, and Horace Ready; Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cantrell; and Majors John G. Lowe and George H. Nixon. Hope this helps. Kevin Morgan
