Does anyone know anything about William Barton from Cannon County? In 1892 he gave his deposition in court in the case of Thomas Ready vs. Patsy Ready, et al. He said in the deposition that he had a brother who had been gone a long time with a drove of horses. He said Tom (Thomas) Caruthers had gone with his brother, and they were never heard of, and never returned. Tom Caruthers was hired by William Barton's brother to go with him. Does anyone know the name of William Barton's brother who went with Tom Caruthers with a "drove" of horses and never returned? Thanks. Betty McCollum Betty G. I think I missed what White Castle and Krystal are. We still have RC and Moon Pies here in Texas. There is also not only Orange Crush, but also Grape Crush, now. Did y'all have those A&W Root Beer stands? That was wonderful, in frosted mugs-especially on a hot day. They sell it in bottles and cans, but it isn't nearly as good as they had at those drive ins. I don't think they have them anymore. The ones I knew of have all closed. Also loved the Pig Stands in Houston. Wonderful pork barbeque sandwiches. I loved to eat sliced chicken sandwiches in the dining cars on the train, years ago. We don't even have passenger trains through here anymore, although they are trying to get them back. I guess it was about 10 years ago that I rode the train from Bryan to Dallas and back. I was so disappointed in the dining. I really looked forward to one of those sliced chicken sandwiches, and the white tablecloths and silver. All they had was a little booth where you could buy hamburgers, snacks like a slice of pizza, chips, etc. at a very high price. I just got a bag of chips and went back to my seat. I used to get those sliced chicken sandwiches, an open faced sandwich, or breaded veal cutlets, when I would go out and eat. If it wasn't on a date or at a special event, I would just order french fries and a Coke. Anyone else ever have Lime Ice in the summer? I tried to remember how my friend who worked at the drugstore made it. After many years of wondering, I finally wrote to her and asked. She said it is just fresh lime squeezed over ice. Some people liked to put salt in it. It wasn't real sour, so I thought that maybe they had used some kind of syrup in it, too. I wanted my grandsons to have some. Another good place is Swensons, which is a chain. Wonderful, old fashioned food and atmosphere. Ice cream, hamburgers, etc., like they used to be. Unfortunately, the one here closed recently. I don't know where else they might have those shops, but that was one of my favorite places to go here. There used to be Bonanzas here, too, but the ones I knew about closed. Wonderful steaks. There was a similar chain called Sizzlers, but I don't know if they are still open. We used to go to one right behind my apartment when I lived in Galveston. I just drooled all the time, with the smell coming in my windows! Winn Dixie has been closed here, too, as has the Black Eyed Pea restaurant. It's amazing how many places go out of business here, then are quickly replaced by a similar thing. And this is a very rapidly growing area, but a lot of empty buildings are left behind. They have Golden Corral here, too. Our favorite used to be the Piccadilly in downtown Waco, before the big tornado leveled downtown. We went to their restaurant after they moved to the mall, but it wasn't the same. I sort of hate to go to those serve yourself places, after I saw a bunch of little kids, walking around, getting the serving spoons out of food, licking the spoons, them putting them back in the food. Lord knows what gets dropped into the food! Well, we all know stories about that sort of thing. I don't even like for my food to get mixed together. Picky, picky, picky! I know. But that's me. I can't drink any of the diet drinks or use the sugar substitutes. A couple of sips gives me a splitting headache that takes a long time to go away. I've about decided that the old stuff is best. I've gone back to real butter, put cream in the waterey milk they sell us these days. (And I lost weight that way.) The "old folks" lived to ripe old ages in their 90s. Those who died younger are the ones who started dieting and eating all this artificial stuff like margarine, using artificial sweetner, etc. Of course, they also smoked like crazy, too. (That doesn't include the children who died in accidents.) My sister diets, plays sports, and really works to have good health, and she is always telling me she doesn't know how I have lived to be as old as I am. She was a coach and P.E. teacher, still is into tennis, etc. She says it isn't fair, how hard she works on her health, and her cholesterol is high, blood pressure is high, she has had to have 2 back surgeries due to vertabra problems, has had to have surgery on her knees, had an eye injury from a tennis ball, etc. And all my tests are okay. My weight is too high from being given hormones some years ago. We do check because our mother and her sister developed diabetes in their 60s, within a short time of each other, although no one in their family ever had it. I dieted and starved, for years, trying to lose just a little weight, only to gain instead of lose. Doctors finally told me that some people are just meant to be weigh a certain thing. So, I've decided that I may as well enjoy myself. After my father died, my mother wouldn't take care of herself. She sat in her bed, in her underwear, and ate jars of peanut butter and candy, and smoked Cigarettes, then drank diet Coke. She was depressed, obviously. The central heating unit caught on fire in the attic, and all she would do is walk around the house looking for her cigarettes. Scared us to death! Fortunately, a man next door put out the little fire before it could do much damage, but we had to replace the unit and some boards. She got better when she went to stay with my sister, who kept her on a diet and on schedule. I used to drink Shasta Diet drinks, and those were good. They didn't give me headaches, until they changed the sweetner to something that the government said they had to use. I was doing well on Vioxx and cortisone shots in my knees, until my white blood cell count started to spike with the shots. At that time, they wouldn't give me anymore shots, and Vioxx went off the market. I'm taking Celebrex, but that doesn't work as well. I just have to creep around. Can't dance anymore, doggone it. 8>)) Isn't the sodium very low in Sprit or 7-Up. I read it, and that 70 doesn't sound so low, to me. Maybe it's lower than other things. Hmm. I thought that when I started drinking these things a few years ago, they advertised that they have no caffeine and are low sodium. I see that it doesn't say low sodium on the can anymore. One of my friends, an artist and professor in architecture at A&M, did an interesting art exhibit and project a few years ago that was on display several places. I took my students to see it and we all learned a lot. The title was "Sugar Boy". http://www-viz.tamu.edu/faculty/saslow/projects/sugarboy/index.html http://newsarchives.tamu.edu/stories/03/040903-4.html If you like art, you might enjoy her art work. She is a very creative, energetic, and interesting lady. My daughter is fixing our traditional and favorite Red Roast and Red Gravy for Mother's Day dinner tomorrow, with mashed potatoes, of course. Jess & Cousins! Your alert and call for action is admirable, timely and appropriate. This is another application in gov't of 'political correctness', designed so that nobody gets their precious feelings hurt, adds further gov't control over our lives rather than invoke common sense, a rare commodity these days. In Texas there are COUNTY cemeteries... land owned by counties, lots sold, etc. Recently a conflict erupted btw a sheriff (a Rep.) who wished to use inmates already in the cemetery maintaining roads, unsold areas, etc., to straighten stones, etc. The county judge (sort of like the mayor of the county) (a Dem.) says, "NO, once those lots are sold they become pvt. property and you can't use county labor to maintain pvt. property regardless of how old." The Irving GenSoc has taken this on as a project. There is specific TX statute that addresses this and a positive interpretation was obtained from the AG. A few years ago under then Gov. Bush, becasue distances are so great, the State Land Commissioner (USMC, ret.) proposed to establish State Veteran Cemeteries and such was established. In TX, county gov't is part of state gov't. So, w/ this above little tempest, the Commissioner has said, "Since these county cemeteries are actually land owned by the state, why not set aside a portion of those that wish to establish 'County Vet. Cemeteries' to provide a free burial site for vets who do not wish to travel the distances to other vet. cemeteries.' The promulgation of this idea has been added to our project. Since this would be at the discretion of each county and its Commissioner's Ct. (The county's city council), we are not even sure enabling legislation is needed and are waiting on a ruling from the AG. What I am taking too long to say is that political action is often necessary, not that difficult, can be fun and very informative, and getting non-controversial legislation thru is not that difficult, even w/ a bunch as nutty and partisan as ours. If you don't already KNOW your state leg. &/or senator, you should be ashamed of yourself as you are already behind the power curve. Get out there and make your ideas known. Joe Sissom
I was going to ask Jess and Bobby about the Gaither Cemetery on Locke Creek. That is on private property isn't it ? I think Danny Nichols said he knew the owner.. Kevin
Good Letter Joe ! What part of Texas do you live in ? Kevin
How hard would it be to organize an Association for the Preservation of Historic and Family Cemeteries of Cannon County? Everything gets done by email these days, so there would not be much cost to soliciting members, and keeping organized. There should be enough of us on this list to sign up as "members" to give the group some clout with the legislature. When you represent a group with several hundred members, they might listen better than to individuals. The Association for Preservation of the Patton Cemetery has about 40 families the could "join" the new group. Several of you will be together over Memorial Day and at your early June Reunions. Maybe we could sign people up to be members, maybe collect $1 per person at those gatherings and appoint on local member to be their representative to the larger Association. (APHFCCC is not too cool an acronym - maybe someone can come up with something better.) Maybe neighboring counties would like to join or form their own group? Maybe the Historical Society of Middle Tennessee should be carrying the spear on this one? Maybe at your reunions each group should at least circulate a petition and get signatures to present to the appropriate legislative body. We might be able to convince them that they should just forget this one - too many people are going to be unhappy with them. Surely they have bigger issues to deal with. Way too many "maybe's" here I know, but what do you think? Unfortunately it will really depend on the local folks to take the lead, those of us that are far away can't really do it. What are White Castles and Krystals? Sun Drop? We don't have those in our area of Texas. Sounds a little like a brand of hamburger and drugs. Orange Crush or a Big Orange soda water? 8>)) Oh, no! I'm sure that's totally wrong. Yep, all soda waters or either soda water or a Coke. Unless someone asks for a Big Orange, a Big Red, an RuhSee, maybe a Dr. Pepper. There was Orange Crush and Delaware Punch, but you seldom hear of those anymore. I hear that you can get the real, original Dr. Pepper still here in Texas at a little place in Navarro county, Bancrofts Pecans, and also where they make it in East Texas, and that town namejust flew out the window, but it's on bancrofts website. Wish we could get the real, old Coca Cola. Sure was good. I just can't take this new stuff. I used to drink a lot of Cokes, almost exclusively, once I was old enough to buy my own food. Now, they taste so bad, I just drink Sprite or 7-Up, which tastes like water, to me. (Well, I started drinking just those 2 things after I had thyroid surgery a few years ago. Ever since then, everything tastes bad.) We had good, sweet artesian water back home, which now tastes like Clorox, with all the chemicals they put in it. Can't take the chemicals in the water, now. And bottled water gives me a stomach ache, so I stick with orange juice, and Sprite or 7-Up. I look at pictures of Coke and Dr. Pepper, and sure wish they had some that taste as good as I remember them. Every day, when I go visit my aunt at the nursing home, she has to have her Dr. Pepper from the machine downstairs. But, when we take her for a ride in the car, we stop for a drink and a chocolate chip cookie, and she wants a Coke! Cecelia in Texas > Kevin, > This is the south. Jess, Keep coming with your corrections because I had the exact same info on William P. Gilley and I have had it for years! I also have info that Caleb Gilley was md to an Elizabeth Davenport before he md. Isabella C. Bynum. Is this true? Julie In a message dated 5/10/2007 9:35:08 P.M. Central Standard Time, kr4oj@bellsouth.net writes: Kevin, I don't know where your "Gilley" info came from, but as most Gilley genealogy buffs will tell you, whoever put it together is way out in the weeds, at least when it comes to William P. (Peterson) Gilley (generation 4) and subsequent generations of that particular line. I haven't had time to check out the other branches of this info, yet. This is my particular line. For starters, William P. DID NOT DIE IN THE CIVIL WAR. Everyone, who died during the war years, was not necessarily involved in the war. In William P.'s case, he caught and died of influenza, while riding a horse back and forth between a job in Rutherford, while living up on the ridge in Cannon Co., in the dead of winter.
