Joseph Carl6 Hatmaker (Isaac5, Malachi4, Johann Melchior3, Melchior2, George (Jerg)1) was born October 26, 1846 in TN, and died 1917 in TN. He married (1) Elizabeth Beach February 20, 1868 in Anderson Co, TN, daughter of Burton Beach and Melvina Miller. He married (2) Mary Jane Sharp February 22, 1877 in Campbell Co, TN, daughter of James Sharp and Elizabeth Neal. Clinton Courier - Mar 31, 1949 One-hundred and three-year-old "Grandma" Mary Jane Hatmaker, the great-great-grandmother of three, the great-grandmother of 82, and the grandmother of 28, has passed away. Grandma Hatmaker died at 3:45 PM Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs Lavador Loving, Lake City Rt 1. Oldest Citizen - She was Anderson County's oldest citizen. She was a Republican and active homemaker until the past year. Up until 1948, when she was still "well over a 100" Grandma lived in a small house near that of her daughter, doing her own cooking and keeping house. She was married when she was 24 to Joseph Hatmaker, who died 32 years ago. Mr Hatmaker had a two year-old son by a previous marriage. Had Five Children - She was married at the home of the officiating minister, John Reed, a widely known Baptist preacher, who rode horseback to preach at one church, then another. Mrs Hatmaker had five children of her own, of whom three are now living, Mrs Loving, Mrs Nancy Lovely, and Ed Hatmaker, all of Lake City, Rt 1. The adopted boy, William, is now living in Campbell County, he is more than 80 years old. One Of Eight Children - There were eight children in "Grandma's" family, only two, Lewis Sharp of Knoxville and Bill Sharp of Lake City, are living. Grandma was born near the site of Norris Dam in Campbell County, near Cove Creek. She lived in the same general community, usually high on a ridge with Clinch River below and mountains not far away. She lived no easy life, she reached 100 and more the hard way. She plowed with a plow "so big it took three of us younguns to turn it around". She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Services for "Grandma" were held Monday 2 PM at Longfield Baptist Church with the Rev C B Peoples officiating. Burial was in Longfield Cemetery with Martin of Lake City in charge. Mrs Lovely was living with her daughter, Mrs Samuel McDaniel, several months before she was admitted to Brakeville Nursing Home in Knoxville a year ago. She was a member of Old Cameron Baptist Church in Beech Grove. She attended beech Grove Baptist Church before becoming ill. Her husband was the late James Lovely. Funeral services were 2 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home chapel in Lake City. The Rev Edwin Phillips officiated. Burial was in Lovely Cemetery. Survivors include four sons; W T, Clayton, J C, and James; three daughters, Mrs Virgil Creekmore, Mrs C E Ward, both of Lake City, and Mrs Harold Rogers of Bonny Blue, VA; two brothers, Condy and John, both of Jellico; two half -sisters, Miss Edna Dabney of Clinton and Mrs Ruth Jones of Marlowe. Loving resided on Longfield Road, Lake City, Rt 2. He was a retired coal miner. When he worked, he was employed at mines in the Beech Grove area outside Lake City. Loving was a member of Longfield Baptist Church where he was a deacon. He leaves his wife of almost 60 years; Mrs Katherine Hatmaker Loving; one son, John Loving of Lake City; four daughters, Mrs Mable Vinsant and Mrs Beatrice Hill, both of Lake City, Mrs Christine Smyth of Clinton, and Mrs Leona Hatmaker of Oak Ridge; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs Lassie Slover of Lake City. Services were held at 2 PM Saturday at Longfield Baptist Church. Officiating ministers were the Rev Paul Wilson, the Rev Edward Luttrell, and the Rev Henry McCann. Burial was in Longfield Cemetery.
