    3. Hi Debbie: We have so many James and James Franklin Smiddys that I will have to check my records and find which one this is. You are correct, Coal Creek, now Lake City, is in Anderson County. Most of the earlier Smiddys lived in the Jacksboro/Caryville area of Campbell Co. Some did go to Briceville and worked in the coal mines there. Edward and Joseph Smiddy were both killed in the Fraterville mine explosion. Their parents were James Franklin Smiddy and Polly Woods Smiddy, both being deceased at the time of their sons' deaths. Polly also lost 4 Woods family members in that explosion. This particular James Franklin Smiddy sometimes went by Frank James Smiddy, said there were too many James Franklins. He then changed it to James Smithers. He is buried in the Sharp Cemetery between Jacksboro and Caryville, right next to Cove Lake. He was in the Civil War, Union, as were all the Smiddys, and was shot and killed by James Hannah in the 1880's. I will check my info tomorrow and see if I can find the particular James Smiddy that you are looking for. Our immediate family group left Jacksboro and went to the mountains around the Stinking Creek area during the Civil War. Most of them were coal miners too. Uncle Caswell Smiddy and his family ended up in the mines in Harlan County, KY. My husband's father was killed at Westbourne in the mine there, and two weeks later his brother, John Lewis "Penny" Smiddy was killed at Ivy Dell, also mining.
