DesMarais Jr., 78, of Norris, Janie Mae Kirksey, 86, a 60-year resident of Oak Ridge, Gertrude "Trudy" Singleton of Clinton Freda Gilbert Phillips, 79, of Oliver Springs, Philip O. DesMarais Jr., 78, of Norris, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. Mr. DesMarais was veteran of the U.S. Navy, and a member of Saint James Episcopal Church in Knoxville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip DesMarais Sr. and Grace Irwin DesMarais. Mr. DesMarais is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Elizabeth DesMarais; his son, Philip DesMarais III and wife, Jackie, of Norris; his grandsons, Christopher DesMarais of Norris and Brandon Reise of Los Angeles, Calif.; and his brother, Robert DesMarais and wife, Yvonne, of Bradenton, Fla. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Saint James Episcopal Church in Knoxville. The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of arrangements. Janie Mae Kirksey, 86, a 60-year resident of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at Hillcrest West Hospice in Knoxville. Born May 19, 1918, in Walker County, Ga., she was the daughter of David Franklin Thurman and Mattie Lu Ella Silver Thurman. Mrs. Kirksey was a homemaker and a longtime member of Robertsville Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and took part in the making of the 50th Year City Quilt at the Senior Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Kirksey, in 1984, and her son, Dell Kirksey, in 1994. Mrs. Kirksey is survived by four daughters, Kay Freeman and husband, Tom, of Holly Springs, Ga., Glenda Faye Grubb and husband, Calvin, of Oak Ridge, Sue Sweeney and husband, Tom, of Lexington, and Nancy McBryar and husband, Jesse, of Oak Ridge; her brother, Frank Thurman of Rossville, Ga.; and her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Thurman of LaFayette, Ga. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Christine Bruner and husband, Carl, and Lynda Lovingood and husband, Jamie, all of Knoxville, Matthew Brown and wife, Patricia, of Fort Campbell, Ky., Andy Freeman and wife, Emily, of Austell, Ga., Angela Sweeney of Reno, Nev., Chris McBryar of Albuquerque, N.M., Lisa McBryar of Chattanooga, Jason McBryar and wife, Mari, of Oak Ridge, and Ryan Sweeney of Lexington; and by six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff and doctors of 4 West of Methodist Medical Center, Continuum Courtyards Assisted Living, Caris Hospice and Hillcrest West Hospice. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with Rev. Bob Gray and the Rev. Dr. Michael Prince officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The grandsons and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers. Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of Harvey and Maudie Braden Hooks. Mrs. Singleton was a member of Longfield Baptist Church, where she was the organist. She retired from St. Mary's Medical Center after 28 years of loyal service. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star. According to her family, Mrs. Singleton loved singing, playing the accordion, traveling, and spending time with her family, whom she loved very much. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Lloyd Hooks. Mrs. Singleton is survived by her husband, Lawrence "Shorty" Singleton; her son, Victor Carter of Coalfield; her brothers, Bobbie Hooks and wife, Marylee, of Lake City, and Bill Hooks and wife, Jewel, of Clinton; and her sisters, Betty Hilditch and husband, Bob, of Ocala, Fla., and Rosemary Adkins and husband, Jim, of Crossville. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Amber Grimsley; her great-grandchildren, Malachi and Lydia Grimsley; her nephews Roger, Dana, Danny, David and Wally; and by her special uncle, Issac Braden, and her special cousin Lillian Hooks. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, in the chapel of Hatmaker Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Mike Foust and the Rev. David Triplett officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at Indian Bluff Missionary Baptist Church cemetery in Briceville. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at the funeral home.
