From the Oak Ridger 8 Nov 2004 Louis Edwin Hughes, 47, of Oak Ridge, Mary Earle Thomas, 94, of Oak Ridge Edith A. Jackson, 81, of Coalfield, Louis Edwin Hughes, 47, of Oak Ridge, died Nov. 4, 2004, at his home. Born Feb. 23, 1957, in Rockwood, he was the son of John D. and Ruth Sheets Hughes, both deceased. Mr. Hughes was a musician active in the ministry at Grace Lutheran Church, where he was also a member. Formerly, he was the activities director at Briarcliff Health Care Center, Farragut Health Care Center and Hillcrest Medical Nursing Institute. According to his family, Mr. Hughes enjoyed playing the piano and organ and spending time with his family and friends. He was the director of the hand bell choir and a member of two praise bands at Grace Lutheran Church. He was instrumental in the development of the contemporary worship ministry there, and he often played piano and organ for weddings and funerals. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his brother, David Wayne Hughes, in February 1993. Mr. Hughes is survived by his brother, Marvin Hughes, of Oak Ridge; his nephew, Jonathan Hughes, of Johnson City; his sister-in-law, Cathy Powell, of Johnson City; his niece, Elizabeth Baird, of Elizabethton; his nephew, Nathan Baird, of Knoxville; his niece, Kayley Sexton, of Kingsport; his nephew, Steven Fletcher, of Church Hill; his dog, Rocky; his church family at Grace Lutheran Church; and all of his special friends in the Knoxville and Tri-Cities areas. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Damos officiating. Special music will be provided by Becky Ball, Paula Wertenberger, Brenda Goslee, the Grace hand bell choir, senior choir and praise bands, and other musicians who knew and loved Mr. Hughes, according to family members. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3 to 4 p.m., and a reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall at the church. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mary Earle Thomas, 94, of Oak Ridge died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at her home. Born on June 21, 1910, in West Point, Miss., she was the daughter of Guy Mitt and Josephine Wise. Mrs. Thomas was a member of Central Baptist Church and had worked at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, Elm Grove Drugstore and with Thomas Decorating Service. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Joe T. Thomas; her brothers, Sydney Guy Wuse and Frank Wise; and her sisters, Ada Harter, Josephine Cantrell and Willie White Jones. She is survived by her daughters, Glenda Thomas of Knoxville and Patty Thomas Robson of Oak Ridge; her grandchildren, Heather Hansard and husband, Wesley, of Goldsboro, N.C., and Sean Robson of Oak Ridge; her sisters, Lila Ware of Houston, Texas, and Frances Lamon of West Point, Miss; special friends Dottie Hill and Elaine Whittaker, and her special companion, her dog Cricket. A graveside service will be held at 1p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Bob Gray officiating.
