From The Knoxville News Sentinel 18 Nov 2004 DABBS, JOHN WILSON THOMAS - 82, a retired physicist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, FLORES, ANTONINO - age 28 of Oak Ridge, TN, DABBS, JOHN WILSON THOMAS - 82, a retired physicist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, died of cardiac arrest on November 17th at National Health Care nursing home in Oak Ridge after a brief illness. He was a resident of Oak Ridge since 1946, except for a period of residence in Karns from 1952-61. Dr. Dabbs was the son of John W. T. and Ruth Fuqua Dabbs, of Donelson, Tennessee, and graduated from Donelson High School in 1939. He graduated in 1944 with a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tennessee, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. After working on the Manhattan Project in Chicago, Illinois during 1944-45, he married the former Betty Jane Hicks of Fountain City, Tennessee in 1945, and served in the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and in Oak Ridge from 1945-1947. He obtained his Ph. D. in Physics from the University of Tennessee in 1955. Working with other scientists, he briefly held a world record for the lowest temperature ever achieved. As a participant in scientific exchange programs, he led his family to periods of residence in Argentina in 1961 and in France in 1967-68. He was a member of the Physics Division at ORNL for most of his career, and worked on technology transfer prior his retirement in 1986. Dr. Dabbs was also active in the growth of two local technology-based companies, ORTEC and Elographics, both of which created significant numbers of jobs in Oak Ridge, as well as Oak Ridge Development Corporation. In the 1970's, he unsuccessfully promoted the establishment of a small airport for Oak Ridge. He served as the President of Elo graphic s in 1976 prior to its sale in the early 1980's. He was an active member of the United Church (Chapel on the Hill) and throughout his life in Oak Ridge, participated in many social, civic and hobby organizations, including the Let's Dance Club and the Mobile Steam Society / Steam Automobile Club of America. He was preceded in death by his wife and his older son, Richard, as well as his sister, Anne Dabbs Stockell. Survivors include two children, Carol Dabbs, of Arlington, Virginia, and David Dabbs of Richmond, Virginia; five grandchildren, John Michael Dabbs of Oak Ridge, Elizabeth, Emily, and Amy Dabbs of Richmond, Virginia, and Lily Dabbs of Knoxville; one great-grandson, Cameron Dabbs of Oak Ridge; and a sister, Ruth Dabbs Regan of Nashville. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, 2 PM at United Church, Chapel on the Hill with Rev. R. Boyd Carter officiating. Interment will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 1 - 2 pm and Saturday evening from 6 - 8 pm at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge. FLORES, ANTONINO - age 28 of Oak Ridge, TN, passed away Sunday, November 14, 2004 at UT Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. Antonino was born on July 3, 1976 in Mexico. Antonino had lived and worked in the United States for the last 6 years. His dream was to build his family a nice home in Mexico and return there after that dream was achieved. Antonino had achieved that dream and had planned to return home to his family and his new home in Mexico to live the week of November 21, 2004. Survivors: parents: Marcelino & Catarina Flores of Mexico; special cousins, Germencio Aguilar of Oak Ridge, TN, Anna Aguilar of Oak Ridge, TN, Delfino Aguilar of Oak Ridge, TN; and a host of other relatives & friends. The family will receive friends Thursday, November 18, 2004, from 3:00-5:00 pm at Jones Mortuary in Clinton, TN. The Interment will be at Llano Perdido Cemetery in Guerrero City, Mexico.
