From the Oak ridger 18 Nov 2004 John Wilson Thomas Dabbs, 82, a retired physicist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Ardyce Gregor Lee, 80, of Oak Ridge, Antonino Flores, 28, of Oak Ridge, John Wilson Thomas Dabbs, 82, a retired physicist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, died of cardiac arrest Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at NHC Healthcare of Oak Ridge after a brief illness. He had been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1946, except for a period of residence in Karns from 1952 to 1961. Dr. Dabbs was the son of John W. T. and Ruth Fuqua Dabbs, of Donelson, and graduated from Donelson High School in 1939. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1944 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. At UT, he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. After working on the Manhattan Project in Chicago during 1944 and 1945, he married the former Betty Jane Hicks of Fountain City in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, and in Oak Ridge from 1945 to 1947. He obtained his doctorate in physics from UT in 1955. Working with other scientists, he briefly held a world record for the lowest temperature ever achieved. As a participant in scientific exchange programs, he led his family to periods of residence in Argentina in 1961 and in France in 1967 and 1968. He was a member of the Physics Division at ORNL for most of his career, and worked on technology transfer prior his retirement in 1986. Dr. Dabbs was also active in the growth of two local technology-based companies, ORTEC and Elographics, both of which created significant numbers of jobs in Oak Ridge, as well as Oak Ridge Development Corporation. In the 1970s, he unsuccessfully promoted the establishment of a small airport for Oak Ridge. He served as the president of Elographics in 1976 prior to its sale in the early 1980s. He was an active member of the United Church, Chapel on the Hill, and, throughout his life in Oak Ridge, participated in many social, civic and hobby organizations, including the Let's Dance Club and the Mobile Steam Society/Steam Automobile Club of America. He was preceded in death by his wife and his eldest son, Richard, as well as his sister, Anne Dabbs Stockell. Dr. Dabbs is survived by two children, Carol Dabbs of Arlington, Va., and David Dabbs of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, John Michael Dabbs of Oak Ridge, Elizabeth, Emily, and Amy Dabbs of Richmond, and Lily Dabbs of Knoxville; one great-grandson, Cameron Dabbs of Oak Ridge; and by his sister, Ruth Dabbs Regan of Nashville. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at the United Church, Chapel on the Hill, with the Rev. R. Boyd Carter officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church and from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Weatherford Mortuary. Ardyce Gregor Lee, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004 at Briarcliff Health Care Center. Born Oct. 20, 1924, in Baker, N.D., she was the oldest daughter of Arnie and Gertrude Gregor. Mrs. Lee graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., in 1945 with a degree in music. While in college, she studied voice at Juilliard School of Music in New York City. She was also awarded a voice scholarship to study abroad in London. Mrs. Lee was a featured soloist in the renowned Concordia College Choir, directed by Paul Christiansen, and performed in concert halls across the United States, including Carnegie Hall. Mrs. Lee taught private voice and piano for 58 years in her music studio on Pasadena Road. During those years she touched the lives of countless aspiring musicians. These six decades were filled with concerts, recitals, state competitions, and college scholarship winners. She was a lifetime member of the Music Educator's National Conference and was awarded the prestigious Tennessee Governor's School for the Arts Outstanding Teacher Award. Mrs. Lee also taught music at Robertsville Junior High for 15 years, where she was recognized for her excellent choral groups. She was a choir director at Grace Lutheran Church and First United Methodist Church for many years. Mrs. Lee was also active in the Girls Scouts of America. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Curtis Gregor, Boyd Gregor and John Gregor. Mrs. Lee is survived by her six children, Patricia Arnett and husband, David, of Miami, Rebecca Szymanski of Oak Ridge, Deborah Ice and husband, William, of Amarillo, Texas, Joseph Lee and wife, Julie, of Oak Ridge, Catherine Lee of McPherson, Ky., and Ardyce Lura Lee, of Oak Ridge.She is also survived by six grandchildren, Stephanie Arnett of San Francisco, Laura Szymanski of Bethlehem, Pa., Elizabeth Arnett of Galway, Ireland, Gregor Lee of Asheville, N.C., and Lindsay Lee and Loren Lee, both of Oak Ridge. In addition, Mrs. Lee is survived by two sisters, Gertrude Berg and husband, Larry, of North Dakota, and Kathryn Christen of Pennsylvania. A memorial service celebrating Ardyce Lee's life will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 26, 2004, at First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at 98 E. Pasadena Road. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association, P.O. Box 4271, Oak Ridge TN 37831-4271. Antonino Flores, 28, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville. Mr. Flores was born on July 3, 1976, in Mexico. He had lived and worked in the United States for the past six years. His dream was to build his family a nice home in Mexico and then return there. He had achieved that dream and had planned to return home to his family and his new home in Mexico later this month. Mr. Flores is survived by his parents, Marcelino and Catarina Flores of Mexico; his special cousins, Germencio Aguilar, Anna Aguilar and Delfino Aguilar, all of Oak Ridge; and by many other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Jones Mortuary in Clinton.
