From the Knoxville News Sentinel 3 Nov 2004 BAILEY, ILA MAE - age 76 of LaFollette, CATE, RAY CLAY - of Oliver Springs LIVELY, LULA K. - age 91 of Lake City, TN, LOVING, MARY JEAN - age 89, of Holston Hills SMITH, WANDA ANN PHILLIPS - age 42 of Helenwood, Tennessee, BAILEY, ILA MAE - age 76 of LaFollette, passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at her home after a long battle with breast cancer. She attended Long Hollow Baptist Church. Preceded in death by parents, Richard and Lucy Newport; son and daughter in law, Stanley and Janice Bailey and brothers, Alonzo and Paul Newport. Mrs. Bailey is survived by her husband of 58 years, Elvin Bailey; sons & daughters in law, Herman and Cleda Bailey, Jacksboro, Lynn and Pam Bailey of LaFollette, Eddie Bailey of Jacksboro, Danny and Renee Bailey of LaFollette, and Michael & Rebecca Bailey of LaFollette; daughters & sons in law Florence & Lynn Ward, Jacksboro, Erma & James Hatmaker, LaFollette, Joann & Dexter Wilson, LaFollette, Cathy & Ricky Silcox, Jacksboro; brother & sister in law, Ray & Willa Newport; 23 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Funeral service 8 p.m. Thursday, November 4 at Cross Funeral Home Rev. Eric Gibby and Rev. George Asbury officiating. Interment 11 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2004 at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Jacksboro. CATE, RAY CLAY - a loving husband, father and grandfather, age 83, a resident of Oliver Springs passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at the Lake City Health Care Center. He was born March 14, 1921 in Kodak, Tennessee, living in Oliver Springs for 42 years. Mr. Cate was a member of Oliver Springs First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Omega Masonic Lodge No. 536, F. & A.M. of Oliver Springs. He was United States Air Force Veteran who served his country during World War II, He retired from South Central Bell as a PBX Technician after 35 years of service. Preceded in death by: his first wife, Theda M. Cate; second wife, Mary F. Cate; parents, Roy & Lula Cate; two brothers, Ed & Hugh Cate; sister, Helen Houk. Survivors. son, John Cate & wife, Judy of Wichita, Kansas; daughter, Jane Halcomb & husband, Mark of Clinton; sister, Elizabeth Norris of Knoxville; grandsons, Nicholas Cate & wife, Melissa of Ft. Worth, Texas; Andrew & Foster Halcomb of Clinton; several nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends. Hatmaker Funeral Home of Lake City in charge of arrangements. LOVING, MARY JEAN - age 89, of Holston Hills died Tuesday morning November 2, 2004. Born in Louisville, KY, she attended Harlan High School and Sayre High School in Lexington, KY and the University of Tennessee, where she received her degree in home economics. Mrs. Loving taught home economics and later became a dietician for the Harlan Co., KY and Campbell Co., TN Board of Education. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Kings Daughters, Garden Club, served as Den mother for the Cub Scouts, and most of all was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by: her husband of 61 years, Fred Loving, Jr.; her parents, Dr. and Mrs. H.K. Buttermore; and brother, Bernard Buttermore. She is survived by: her children, Kathryn Loving Poole and husband, Bill of Paris, KY, Fred Loving, III of Knoxville, Terry G. Loving and wife, Karen of Harlan, KY; brothers, Dr. Tommy N. Buttermore of Winchester, KY, Willard Martin Buttermore of Corbin, KY, Harry King Buttermore, Jr. of Lexington, KY, Rodney E. Buttermore, Sr. and Dalton B. Buttermore both of Mary Alice, KY; sister, Ruth Alice Pope of Bradenton, FL; grandchildren, Mary Kristina Feller, Merritt C. Loving, Tommy Poole, Brook Loving, and Andrew Loving; great granddaughter, Elaine Kathryn Feller; and a host of nieces and nephews. SMITH, WANDA ANN PHILLIPS - age 42 of Helenwood, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at her home. Born in Norma, Tennessee May 19, 1962, she was the daughter of Harold Phillips, Harold Duncan and Geneva Carol Duncan. She was of the non-denominational faith. Wanda was preceded in death by: her fathers, Harold Phillips and Harold Duncan; one son, Mark Sawyer Biggerstaff; and one brother, Ronald Dean Phillips. She is survived by: her husband, Ronald Smith; six children, Shawne,, Markea, Dustin, Benjamin, Samuel and Matthew Biggerstaff; her mother, Geneva Carol Duncan; one brother, Harold Dewayne Phillips; two sisters, May Lackey and Lisa Day and husband Tony; four grandchildren, Kaleb Laxton, Kaylee Biggerstaff, Haley Strunk and Jade Smith; mother and father-in-law, Ben and Beatrice Smith; a special niece, Nikki Duncan; special sisters-in-law, Lonas Smith and Sarah Summer; and a special aunt, Carolyn Williams. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 3, at 8 p.m. in the Chapel of Jones and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Duncan and Rev. Carlie Duncan officiating. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, November 4, at 12 p.m. at Hazel Valley Cemetery.
