EWING, MARY LUCY - age 95 of Harriman passed away Friday November 5, 2004 at Rockwood Health Care Center. Ms Ewing was born in Meigs County February 13, 1909 and attended Carson-Newman College. She was an educator for more than 40 years, teaching elementary students in both Meigs County & the Harriman City School system from which she retired. She was a volunteer "Pink Lady" at Roane Medical Center for many years. She was a member Trenton Street Baptist Church and the Roane County Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her parents William A. & Lennie Matheny Ewing & one sibling. Survivors: cousins, Tom & Alma Rice of Harriman, Geneva Ewing of Cleveland; many other cousins, friends and former students; special friends, Mattie & Stanley Dalton, Clara Sexton. Funeral 2:00 P.M. SHARP, PAUL "PORKIE" - age 82 of Caryville, Tenn. (in the Cherry Bottom Community), passed away Friday, November 5, 2004 at the Lake City Healthcare Center. Mr. Sharp had accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord. He served in the US Navy during WW II. He belonged to Coal Creek Masonic Lodge #492. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave & Luzetta Sharp; brothers, Robert & Fred Sharp. Survivors: step daughter, Pricilla Bowen of Ariz.; grandchild, Michelle Bowen of Calif.; sisters, Martha Tackett & husband, Virgil of Caryville, Mary Wright of Lake City, Bonnie Kelly of Clinton; several nieces & nephews and a host of other relatives and friends and employees of Plasti-Line in Merrilville, Ind. WHITAKER, MARION LOUISE - age 90 of 1646 West Old Andrew Johnson Hwy., New Market, Tenn., and more recently of 104 Ridenour Lane, Jacksboro, Tenn., passed away Thursday, November 4, 2004 at St. Mary's Health Care Center in LaFollette, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph J. and Fairy Wooten Whitaker and by her grandparents, Henry Clay and Sarah Waltz Whitaker and William T. and Sally B. Hodges Wooten. She is survived by her sister, Alice Whitaker Coker of Jacksboro, Tenn.; two nephews, John Whitaker Coker who made his home with her on Fairview Farm in New Market, Tenn., and Joseph Grant Coker and wife, Kemper Thomson Coker of Lafollette, Tenn.; two nieces, Nancy Ann Coker and Mary Alice Coker; and one nephew, John Joseph Whitaker Coker all of LaFollette, Tenn. Marion graduated from Maryville College and then began a career of teaching in Jefferson County which spanned 45 years. Marion began teaching 3rd grade in Strawberry Plains, Tenn., she later taught high school home economics at New Market, middle school in Jefferson City and her teaching career ended at Jefferson County High School where she taught science. She thoroughly enjoyed her teaching career and her pupils. After the death of her mother, she kept house for her father until his death, after which she took on many duties involved in farming. She drove the tractor, mowed hay, bush-hogged and managed a herd of beef cattle. She had many hobbies such as sewing, knitting, tatting, reading, genealogy and trying new recipes. Marion was a lifelong member of Wooten Chapel United Methodist Church. She was always involved with her church and was a great student of the Bible, who shared her knowledge by teaching Sunday school. Somehow she acquired the reputation as the local historian of her community. She had intended to write a book with all the material she collected. Marion was a national and international traveler, and over the years she traveled extensively and kept a daily diary of her travel adventures. She has now made her last voyage, prepared to enter the gates of Heaven, the most important trip of her life. Funeral service 3 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 2004 at Wooten Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Millard Johnson and Rev. Richie Hayes officiating. Interment to follow in the New Market Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wooten Chapel United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the church prior to the funeral service.
