From the Oak ridger 30 Nov 2004 Nancy Ethel Martin Scarbrough, 86, of Oak Ridge, Wanda Lee Gray, 82, of Oak Ridge, Phyllis Ruth Starkey Weber, 79, of Oak Ridge, Dortha Jean Crawford, 64, of Clinton, Lyle Frank Lieber, 89, of Oak Ridge, Evelyn Inez Fullam, 96, of Oak Ridge, Oves Phillips, 87, of Oak Ridge, formerly of Oliver Springs, Robert "Bob" Gordon Clewell, 85, of Oak Ridge, Nancy Ethel Martin Scarbrough, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at her home. Mrs. Scarbrough was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Earles, Ky., Mullenberg County, to Fred H. and Ethel Wiggins Martin. She lived nine years with her Aunt Bessie Martin Woodburn and husband, Dr. J. C. Woodburn, of Greenville, Ky. A member of the First United Methodist Church, Mrs. Scarbrough was a retired teacher from the Oak Ridge schools, where she taught from 1946 until 1978. Before her marriage to the late Gilbert L. Scarbrough on Sept. 2, 1942, she had taught in the Mullenberg County Schools from 1938 to 1941. Because of her husband's military career in the U.S. Air Force, the couple moved often, and Mrs. Scarbrough taught in Mississippi, Fresno, Calif., and Lenoir City. Mrs. Scarbrough enjoyed reading, knitting, walking, baby-sitting her grandchildren when they were young, and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Clinch Bend Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Oak Ridge Retired Teachers Association, United Methodist Women's Society, Oak Ridge Lioness Club, and Volunteers at the Oak Ridge Public Library, and she volunteered at the Methodist Church folding First Things. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Scarbrough was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary L. Felty, Beulah M. Phillips, and Anna R. Carroll, and one brother, Feed Martin, Jr. Mrs. Scarbrough is survived by her daughter, Janet Lynne Scarbrough; her son-in-law, William M. Bloom of Louisville, Ky.; her sister, Eva Jane Martin Parker of Bowling Green, Ky.; her granddaughter, Brenna M. Freville; her grandson, John Gilbert Freville and wife, Holly L., her step-granddaughter Dana Wagner and husband, Drew; her step-grandson, Mat R. Bloom; and step great-grandson, William Edward Wagner. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, in the chapel of Oak Ridge Memorial Park with Rev. Bob Cantrell officiating. She was born Nov. 4, 1922, in Alden, Kansas, the daughter of Ray Morris Page and Emma Lee Fair Page. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Oak Ridge Woman's Club. She also served as a volunteer with the Gray Ladies of the Oak Ridge Hospital from 1967 to 1983. She loved traveling and the holidays. Most of all she loved her family and friends. She considered Virginia Cousins and Elene Elrod to be special friends. She is survived by her husband, Robert James Gray; her son, Gary Gray; her daughter, Karen Carta and husband, Mike, all of Knoxville; her sister, Zita Stout of Hutchinson, Kan.; three grandchildren, Bryan Gray, Stephanie Brough and Katy Carta; and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004 at First Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. An on-line guest book may be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com Phyllis Ruth Starkey Weber, 79, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at her home, after a prolonged illness. She was born March 31, 1925, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., the daughter of Leon and Ruth Roane Starkey. She received a bachelor of science degree from Northwestern University and became a registered nurse at Evanston Hospital School of Nursing in Evanston, Ill., in 1947. She worked at hospitals in Evanston, Chicago, Bloomington, Ind., Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Oak Ridge. In 1948, she married Charles W. Weber, a senior chemistry student, and they moved to Bloomington, Ind., the following year, where he earned his doctorate at Indiana University. Their first two children, Kathy and Paul, were born in 1950 and 1952. In 1953, the Webers moved to Oak Ridge where Charles began work with Union Carbide. Their third child, Andrew, was born in 1958. Mrs. Weber was a community volunteer for many years with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, the Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse, Oak Ridge library and Methodist Medical CEnter of Oak Ridge. She worked with CONTACT for 10 years and Recording for the Blind for 20 years. As a member of First United Methodist Church, she worked in its library for 30 years. She also organized a library at Ridgeview Mental Health Center and another at Methodist Medical Center. She is survived by her husband, Charles Weber; her daughter, Kathy Haney of Chattanooga; her sons, Paul Weber and wife, Christine, of Livermore, Calif., and Andrew Weber and wife, Sheila, of Knoxville; her sister, Jean Wozniak and husband, Don, of Naples, Fla.; and eight grandchildren, Matthew Haney of Raleigh, N.C., Jason Haney of Tokyo, Japan, Laura Weber and Sarah Weber of Livermore, Calif., and Andrew, Stephen, Kayla and Colin Weber of Knoxville. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Weatherford Mortuary. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Clinton. Mrs. Crawford was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Mary Vickery Martin. She is survived by her daughters, Mary King and husband, Michael, Dortha Phillips and husband, Robert, and Belinda Crawford, all of Clinton; her brother, Frank Vickery of Palakia, Fla.; her sisters, Novella Hatmaker of Clinton, Joyce Morris and husband, Herschel, of Cleveland, Ohio; her grandchildren, Courtney, Kelsey, Brendan, Breanna, Journey King and Bobbie Phillips; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Frank Massengill officiating. Lyle Frank Lieber, 89, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a long illness. Mr. Lieber was born Sept. 5, 1915, in Dowagiac, Mich., to Frank and Madge Latham Lieber. He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at Michigan State University, East Lansing, in 1938. While working at General Electric in Schenectady, he was selected to work as part of the Manhattan Project and later relocated to Oak Ridge in 1944. Mr. Lieber held a number of positions at the plants in instrumentation and management until his retirement. His highest complement of a man was that "he was a family man." Lyle was a quintessential family man. Whether collecting funds for the Highland Rim Council of the Girl Scouts when his daughters were young, or playing with his grandchildren later, he delighted in children. He was an avid photographer who spent hours behind the lens and in the darkroom. His family was his favorite subject matter, and his photographs of them won him awards in the plant paper, Carbide Courier. He also wrote an article on ice fishing that was published in the Reminiscence Magazine. Mr. Lieber was a longtime member of the Benevolent and Proctective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 1684, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Oak Ridge Boat Club. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lieber was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Lieber, who died nine months ago. He is survived by his sisters, Louise Goodell of Portage, Mich., and Evelyn Johnson of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; three daughters, Dana Gambill of Lexington, Ky., Linn Silverman of Homestead, Fla., and Jill Hulker of Redmond, Wash.; two step-daughters, Jacque Skidmore of Madisonville and Phyllis Wilson of Erin; his grandchildren, Kelly Wilshere, Marni Mutrux, Brian Silverman, Amy Silverman, and Max Hulker; his step-grandson, Kevin McClure; his great-grandchild, Madison Beatte; and step great-grandchildren, Dannielle and Taylen McClure. In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Lieber was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Evelyn Inez Fullam, 96, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at the Briarcliff Health Care Center. The daughter of Charles Lewis and Alice Smith Taylor, Mrs. Fullam moved to Oak Ridge in 1944 from Asheville, N.C. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Baptist Church. A member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Oak Ridge Senior Center, she enjoyed making ceramics and taking care of others and her grandchildren. Mrs. Fullam was preceded in death by her husband, W. E. Fullam, Sr. She is survived by her sons, Willard Edward Fullam Jr. and wife, Ruthie, of Charlotte, N.C., and Roy Thomas Fullam and wife, Beverly, of Dayton; and by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Craig officiating. He was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Anderson County, to the late Ramsey and Martha Phillips. Mr. Phillips was a member of the Corbin Hill Baptist Church. He loved collecting guns and knives. In addition to his parents, Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Irvin and Joe Phillips, and his sisters, Flossie Bunch, Rhona Shinliver, Grace Roysden and Christine Hungate. Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Delsie Phillips of Oliver Springs; his daughter, Cleda Phillips of Oliver Springs; his sons, Odie Phillips of Oliver Springs, Freddie Phillips of Oak Ridge, and Bobby Phillips and wife, Claira, of Oliver Springs; and his sisters, Nancy Patty of Clinton and Evelyn Edmonds of Knoxville. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Barbara and Teddy Webb of Oliver Springs and Carlene and Allen Wilson of Oliver Springs; three great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Crystal Davis of Oak Ridge. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at the Mineral Springs Baptist Church cemetery in Oliver Springs, with the Rev. Don Daugherty officiating.
