From The Knoxville News Sentinel 1 May 2004 EDWARDS, JOHN WOODROW - age 82, of Oak Ridge, KETHLEY, JOHN BRYAN, PhD - age 61 of Clinton, KEUSCH, GEORGE - age 78, of Clinton SHEARIN, HUBERT (SQUEAKY) - SMITH, LEE A. JR. - 83, of Oak Ridge, TACKETT, MARY MAGDELINE - age 90 of Lake City \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ EDWARDS, JOHN WOODROW - age 82, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, April 29, 2004 at the Methodist Medical Center. He was born July 25, 1921 in Franklin, NC, the son of A. J. and Daisy Baldwin Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a veteran of WWII serving with the US Army Air Corp. in the 8th Air Force, 25th Bomb Group in the European Theater from 1942 - 1945. He married Mae Frady, April 30, 1950 and graduated from Western Carolina University in 1954. That same year he came to Oak Ridge to work as a photographer at K-25 and retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems in 1986. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. He is survived by: son, Bill Edwards and wife Judy of Kingston; daughter, Shirley McCartney and husband Rob of Oak Ridge; grandchildren, Melanie Edwards, Jennifer Scarbrough, Jacob McCartney, Caleb McCartney, Steve Edwards, Robert Edwards, Wayne Smith, John Smith and Jerry Smith; 3 great grandchildren and sisters, Gladys Tallent, Louise Gibson, Allia Mack, DeeDee Starback and Wilma Roper. A private service is planned with burial in Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to Robertsville Baptist Church, 251 Robertsville Rd., Oak Ridge, TN 37830. (www.weatherfordmortuary.com) KETHLEY, JOHN BRYAN, PhD - age 61 of Clinton, Tennessee passed away Thursday, April 29, 2004 at his residence. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Entomological Society of America & the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Born October 18, 1942 in Passaic, New Jersey. He graduated from Decatur High School in Decatur, Georgia. He earned his bachelor & doctorate degrees at The University of Georgia. Retired from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Preceded in death by parents, Thomas William & Jane Moore Kethley. Survivors: wife, Judith Kethley of Clinton, TN; brother, Bill Kethley & wife Caroline of Athens, GA; sister, Dorothy Allen & husband Asa Lee of Athens, GA; nephews, Tom, Jim, John Kethley & Randy Shaw; nieces, Nancy Kethley & Julia Shaw. The family will receive friends 2:00-4:00 PM, Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with a memorial service following in the chapel. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton, Tennessee in charge of all arrangements. KEUSCH, GEORGE - age 78, of Clinton passed away Thursday, April 29, 2004 at Select Specialty Hospital in Knoxville. George was a loving husband, father, grandfather & great-grandfather. He was of the Lutheran faith. Preceded in death by parents, Samuel & Katharina Keusch & brother, Samuel Keusch. Born November 29, 1925 in Romania. He was a man of great character whose judgment, humor and friendly spirit brought out the finest in those around him. The influence of his life upon others is a flame that will burn brightly forever. He left so much with every soul he touched on this earth. Survivors: wife of 53 years, Margaret Keusch of Clinton; daughters, Deborah Fisher of Clinton, Linda Vaughn Kube & husband Manfred of Norris, Kathy Taylor of Clinton & boyfriend, Jeff Gilliam; grandchildren, Brandon Fisher of Clinton, Travis Vaughn stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, Jake Taylor of Clinton; great grandchildren, Paige Vaughn of Jacksonville, Florida, Parker Vaughn of Jacksonville, Florida; sister, Jean Ruppel & husband Paul of Canada; sister-in-law, Terry Rink of Clinton; several nieces & nephews. The family will receive friends 1:00-2:00 PM, Monday, May 3, 2004 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with a memorial service following in the chapel. The graveside service will follow at Sunset Cemetery. SHEARIN, HUBERT (SQUEAKY) - passed away April 29 at NHC. Mr. Shearin was born February 15, 1915 in Shelbyville, Tenn. He lived most of his life in Oak Ridge and worked for the US Postal Service until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Shearin coached baseball for many years and owned and operated the Oak Ridge Bat Bat and Par Three Golf Course. He was an avid fan of Oak Ridge High School teams and of UT football. Mr. Shearin was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian and second wife, Helen. He is survived by his three children and their families, Judy Shearin Jackson of Jeffersonville, Ind., Mike Shearin of Maryville and Mark Shearin of Knoxville. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. with a service at 8 p.m. Saturday at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. Interment 1 p.m. Sunday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. SMITH, LEE A. JR. - 83, of Oak Ridge, died April 29th after an extended illness. Mr. Smith, oldest child of Lee and Virginia Anderson Smith of Jefferson County, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He retired in 1984 after 38 years of service with Union Carbide and Martin-Marietta at the K-25 facility. He was a member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Brandon Smith; and four children: Brandon Smith and wife Jean Richardson, Lynne Smith, Stanley Smith and wife Beth Summers Smith, and Jeffrey Smith. He is survived by his brother, Ruble Smith; his grandchildren, Theron Smith, Lacey Smith, and Gavin Smith; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith's body was donated to the Quillen College of Medicine at ETSU. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 2nd, at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. TACKETT, MARY MAGDELINE - age 90 of Lake City passed away Thursday, April 29, 2004 at the Lake City Health Care Center. She was born February 9, 1914 in Harlan, Kentucky to the late Abe and Martha Wilson. Magdeline was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Lake City. She retired from the Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge, TN in 1975. She enjoyed cooking for her family, gardening, camping and spending time with her friends and family. Magdeline is preceded by death by her parents, husband, Bill Tackett, daughter, Ruth Massengill. Survivors: daughter & son in law, Rubye and John Harmon, Lake City, TN; sons &daughters in law,Joe and Paula Tackett,Clinton, TN, John Tackett, California; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 13 great great grandchildren.
