    3. Hi Susie: While we are on the subject of newspapers, would you happened to have noticed an article about a murder in the Jellico/TN-KY border area, where a William "Bill" Smiddy killed his wife in about 1939 or 1940? He was the son of the Sheriff George Smiddy, who was killed in the line of duty in Jellico in 1926. George was the sheriff on the KY side of Jellico, and I have that article. George's last name is spelled Schmidty, but is really Smiddy. Sheriff George Smiddy's son William "Bill" was killed by legal electrocution at the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Eddyville, KY in 1941. His murdered wife's name was Faye Medders/Meadows Smiddy. They had three children. I would really like to find an article about this, as Bill's father, the above mentioned Sheriff George Smiddy, was our gr.grandfather's brother's son. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. 3. Elizabeth, I have a copy of the following newspaper article from the LaFollette Press--23 March 1933. William "Bill" Smiddy was charged with the murder of my grandfather's brother, Alfred Sharp. Alfred Sharp was the son of John Sharp and Martha Lay Sharp from Elk Valley, Tn. LaFollette Press -- 23 March 1933 ALF SHARP SHOT MONDAY EVENING Bill Smiddy Has Been Charged with Killing; Riding in Auto At Time Alf Sharp, 40, was shot through the forehead from the dark as a man, alledged to have said that he was Bill Smiddy, halted a car in which Sharp and Rufe Speaks were riding just across the Kentucky line from Jellico Monday night. Bill Smiddy, 23, was arrested in Jellico, Ky, and taken to jail at Williamsburg. Speaks, a superintendent of the Big Nickle Mining Co. at Clearfield who was driving the car in which Sharp was riding, said that as they approached Jellico, Ky, a man stepped out into the road and signalled to them to stop. The man said, "Who is this?" according to Speaks. "This is Alf Sharp." Then there was a gunshot and Sharp slumped in his seat, Speaks said. from Kathy Sharp Chasteen Elizabeth Smiddy <smiddy@ccdi.net> wrote: Hi Susie: While we are on the subject of newspapers, would you happened to have noticed an article about a murder in the Jellico/TN-KY border area, where a William "Bill" Smiddy killed his wife in about 1939 or 1940? 3. Kathy: I can't thank you enough for sending me this article. I am just so terribly sorry that it was your grandfather's brother that he killed. We were told that it was his wife. So much for family stories. You have cleared up a great mystery for me, and I am grateful that it can be recorded correctly now. Thank you again for taking the time to send it to me, and again, I am so sorry it was your relative who was killed. I wish I knew why he would do such a thing.
