From The Oak Ridger 18 Jun 2004 William Samuel Herron, 88, of Oak Ridge, Helen Burnet Krieg, 105, of Ridgewood, N.J., Frank Hazel Pitzer, 93, of Hopkinsville, Ky., Cynthia Ogle of Oliver Springs William Samuel Herron, 88, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Briarcliff Health Care Center. Born May 9, 1916, in Knoxville, he was the son of Clayton and Bobbie Smith Herron. Mr. Herron attended the old Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee. While in high school, he was a cheerleader, editor of the Blue and White school paper and a member of the track team. After high school, Mr. Herron was employed by Tennessee Valley Authority and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, before forming his insurance agency Herron Insurance in 1950. In 1954, he merged with Joe Connell and formed what is known as Herron-Connell Insurance Agency. He and his wife, Beatrice McLaughlin Herron, were united in marriage March 8, 1940, and were married 57 years at the time of her death on May 15, 1997. They came to Oak Ridge in 1943 and he was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for 10 years. He later became a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a member at the time of his death. He enjoyed golfing, was a past chairman of the American Red Cross in Oak Ridge, served on the board of the Oak Ridge Hospital of the Methodist Church, a member of the Oak Ridge Rotary Club and co-founder of the Oak Ridge Boy's Club. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Herron James. Mr. Herron is survived by two sons, Dr. William S. Herron Jr. and wife, Jacquelyn, of Atlanta, Ga., and J. Steven Herron and wife, Myrna, of Knoxville; his daughter, Judie Herron, of Oak Ridge; two grandchildren, Tobin Herron and Corien Moye and husband, Mike, all of Knoxville; and by four great-grandchildren, Taylor Currier and triplets Raylen Moye, Amber Moye and Bailey Moye, all of Knoxville. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2004, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Steve McDonald officiating. Burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Born in 1898 in Newark, N.J., she was a 1920 graduate of Wellesley College, received a master's degree in English literature in 1922 from Columbia University and later furthered her graduate studies at Cambridge University in England. Mrs. Krieg taught English in Rochester, Minn., Florence, Colo., and at a private girls' school in Newark. She was a member of Ridgewood United Methodist Church, the Green Mountain Club, the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Women's College Club of Ridgewood, the 1902 Reading Club of Ridgewood, and a Gray Lady volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Waltham, Mass. According to her family, Mrs. Krieg had a great love for nature, books and her family. A highlight of early childhood was galloping on her horse through the back streets of Newark at dusk smelling the honeysuckle, her family said. In high school, she won the city wide essay competition and later rounded Cape Horn in a storm, viewing the scene from the ships topmost crows' nest. In the early 1920s, she was the first woman to summit Mount Ranier in early spring, a feat that required 24 hours of continuous climbing and descending since shelters were buried in up to 20 to 30 feet of snow and ice. Later years included ice skating, snow shoeing and a last trip to the summit of Mount Katadin in Maine at age 65. Nineteenth century poetry was a special joy, her family said. Mrs. Krieg is survived by two sons, Dr. Arthur F. Krieg of Hershey, Pa., and Edwin H. Krieg and wife, Margaret, of Oak Ridge; four grandchildren, including Paul Krieg, of Oak Ridge; and by nine great-grandchildren. The funeral was Friday, June 11, 2004, in Ridgewood. Burial followed at Fairmount Cemetery in Newark. Frank Hazel Pitzer, 93, of Hopkinsville, Ky., died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Pinecrest Manor in Hopkinsville. Born Oct. 21, 1910, in Pipestem, W.Va., he was the son of Frank Pitzer and Lona Jane Hedrick. Mr. Pitzer worked as a machinist in Oak Ridge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella Pitzer, in 1996, and by a son, Dr. Frank Pitzer, in 1995. Mr. Pitzer is survived by a son, Darrell Pitzer, of Knoxville; two sisters, Stella McGraw and Janet Cook, both of Crab Orchard, W.Va.; and by four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at Wildwood Cemetery in East Beckley, W.Va. Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home in Hopkinsville is in charge of arrangements. Cynthia Ogle of Oliver Springs died Friday, June 18, 2004, at Harriman Care and Rehabilitation Center.
