From The Knoxville News Sentinel 21 Jun 2004 MADDOX, MR. LESTER GENE - of LaFollette, NEWTON, VELMA MILAM 88, of Oak Ridge, MADDOX, MR. LESTER GENE - of LaFollette, passed away Friday, June 18, 2004, at U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville at the age of 86 years, 6 months, and 17 days. He was born December 1, 1917, in Claiborne County to George and Maggie Maddox of Speedwell, TN. Lester was a farmer, former employee of Imperial Reading Corporation, served in WWII in the Army as a Tail Gunnery Instructor, and was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by: his parents as well as 2 infant brothers; 2 infant sisters; a brother Lawrence; a sister Estelle; and a daughter Connie Jo Pinion. Survivors: wife of 56 years, Mary Lee Maddox of LaFollette; 4 children, Glenda Steinberg of Jacksonville, FL, Jerry Maddox of New Orleans, LA, Rodney Maddox of Crossville, TN, Danny Maddox of Stockbridge, GA; 13 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren; brothers, Ralph Maddox of Clinton, TN, Verlin Maddox of Speedwell, Haze Maddox of Cumberland Gap, and Floyd (Can) Maddox of Speedwell; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services Monday 8 p.m. at Walters Chapel with Rev. Larry Watts and Rev. William Hicks officiating. Music by Gospel Harmony. Family and friends will meet Tuesday 11 a.m. at Ausmus Cemetery in Speedwell for graveside services and interment with Military Honors conducted by Campbell County Honor Guard. Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday before services at Walters Funeral Home. Walters Funeral Home of LaFollette is honored to be serving the family of Mr. Lester Gene Maddox. MATHIS, PAUL - age 55, of Luttrell, passed away Friday June 18, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was a member of Trinity Chapel. Paul was a Youth Director for the U.S. Military where he served in various locations in the U.S. as well as over seas and also was a member of the Planning Board for the City of Plainview. He enjoyed writing poetry, songs, and short stories and was an avid sports fan and had a great love for people as well as his pets; Coco, Joy, Tippy, and Boots. Survivors include: wife, Nernie Mathis; step-daughter, Tammy Lee Wright; grandson, Dalton; step-son, Shayne Mathis; father, Brown T. Mathis; sisters, Melba Ard, Patricia Mathis, and Donna Sue Mathis; brothers, Larry Ivy and Terry Mathis; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Monday with a Memorial Service at 7:00 pm at Trinity Chapel on Haynes Sterchi Road with Sandi Fatow officiating. Adair Dr. www.lynnhurstchapel.com. NEWTON, VELMA MILAM 88, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, June 18, 2004 at Briarcliff Health Care Center. She was born July 9, 1915 in Coal City, Alabama, the daughter of Charles Crandle Milam and Leola Veazy Milam. Mrs. Newton was the widow of Samuel Leon Newton, who died February 3, 1996. She and her husband came to Oak Ridge in July 1941, where she worked at various jobs, including selling Avon. She and her husband attended various churches in Oak Ridge and became members of Community Church, which is now Oak Ridge Alliance Church and later, Trinity United Methodist Church. Her favorite past-time was reading. Additionally, she and her husband made plaster figurines that they gladly gave away. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Flora Bice, Lois Bond and Rosella Brazier. She is survived by her two sons, Harold D. Newton and his wife Mary Lois of Knoxville and N. Kenneth Newton and his wife Brenda of Powell; 6 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Monday, June 21, 2004 at 8:00 pm at Weatherford Mortuary with Rev. Dale Crank officiating. Graveside services are Tuesday at 10:00 am at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
