Bowens Viola Vivian Stepp Elliott, Aleen Beets Grubb, 84, of Clinton, Virginia King Long, of Clinton, Samuel Newton "Newt" Silvey, 85, of Oliver Springs, Jessie B. Bowens died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was a member of Oak Valley Baptist Church. She is survived by her sister, Wonzie Jones, of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren, Norma Ward, Gordon Ward, Victor "Jackie" Threat and Gregory "Deanna" Ward; and by five great-grandchildren and several other relatives and friends. The funeral was Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Oak Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Hardil Thomas officiating. Burial was at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Unity Mortuary in Knoxville is in charge of arrangements. Viola Vivian Stepp Elliott, affectionately known as "Mamaw Siggie," 97, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. Born Oct. 12, 1906, in Elizabethton, she was the daughter of Silas Henry and Bessie Mae Reynolds Stepp. She moved to Oak Ridge in 1945 and was employed with Union Carbide as an engineering librarian retiring in October 1971. She attended Covenant Presbyterian Church. Prior to moving to Oak Ridge, Ms. Elliott taught school in Gap Creek. Her family said she enjoyed gardening, yard work, traveling and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Carroll Elliott, and by a granddaughter, Robin Kay Elliott. Ms. Elliott is survived by a son, Glenn Elliott, of Oak Ridge; her daughter, Carol Reynolds and husband, Bill, of Oak Ridge; and by three sisters, Jewell Elliott of Johnson City, Thelma Hughes of Elizabethton and Bonnie Freeman of Phoenix, Ariz. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Michael Elliott and wife, Jana, Lisa Witt and husband, Bill, Robert Elliott and wife, Martha, Michelle Owen, and Melanie Braden and husband, Steven; six great-grandchildren, Ben Witt and wife, Sian, Alisha Reynolds, Will Reynolds, Nicole Bradford, Michael Daughtery, Jessica Braden and Jared Braden; three great-great-grandchildren, Jordan Vera, Jake Witt and Ty Witt; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 25, 2004, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Duncan Rankin officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Mike Elliott, Robert Elliott, Bill Reynolds, Ben Witt, Bill Witt and Steven Braden will serve as pallbearers. She attended Kenneth Ivey Evangelistic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Len Grubb; her parents, Everett Stewrt and Elizabeth Hunley Beets; her brother, Everett Beets; and by her sister, Alta Hendren. Mrs. Grubb is survived by her daughter, Deborah Grubb, of Oak Ridge; her son, Len Grubb and wife, Linda, of Clinton; and by four grandchildren, Lorea Otaduy Grubb of Oak Ridge, Daniel Len Grubb and Joshua W. Grubb, both of Clinton, and Matthew Allen Grubb of the U.S. Marines. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, June 25, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home Virginia King Long, of Clinton, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004. Born Sept. 27, 1914, in Pineville, Mo., she was the daughter of Lois Prater and Isaac Spencer. Mrs. Long graduated from Pineville High School in 1931. After graduation, she worked in her Aunt Elizabeth Worley's beauty salons. She married Frank Chambers in 1936 and shortly after moved to California. They were married for 19 years. She worked at defense plants during the war years. Five years after her divorce with Mr. Chambers, she married Ralph Long. In 1963, the Longs moved to Tennessee, his home state. They enjoyed the rural life there until his death in 1985. For the past four years, Mrs. Long lived at Hermitage Gardens Assisted Living in Clinton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ada Bayne, of Pineville; a nephew, Gene Bayne, of Joplin, Mo.; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Her family said she lived a long and full life and was blessed with a beautiful and loving nature. Once when asked what she knew for sure, her family said she replied, "I know how little I know. Life passes us by quickly and we don't take advantage of what's here. Do now the things that make you happy." Her family said she will be sadly missed by all who know and loved her. Friends and family may call at their convenience. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton. She will be buried beside her husband, Ralph. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of arrangements. Samuel Newton "Newt" Silvey, 85, of Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born May 16, 1919, Mr. Silvey was a lifelong resident of Oliver Springs and a member of Beech Park Baptist Church. Mr. Silvey was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he received a Purple Heart and three Gold Clusters. After retiring in 1961 from Union Carbide, where he was employed as a security guard, he was employed with Brown Builders Supply in Oliver Springs until his retirement in 1982. His family said he enjoyed bowling, repairing watches and clocks, small engine repair, and spending time visiting with his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, James W. and Minnie Whalen Silvey; his first wife, Koleda Liles Silvey; his second wife, Ethel L. Thacker Silvey; a son, Troy Silvey; a stepson, Houston Thacker; a stepdaughter, Pat Kemp; and by two sisters, Ruby Silvey Lowe and Anna Lou Thacker Applin. Mr. Silvey is survived by his son, Sammy J. Silvey and wife, Janie, of Oliver Springs; a stepson, Tom Thacker, of Oak Ridge; two brothers, Bill Silvey and wife, Mary, and A.K. Silvey and wife, Mildred, all of Oliver Springs; his granddaughter, Ashley Silvey Ogle and husband, Wesley, of Oliver Springs; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2004, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Robbie Leach and the Rev. Keith Price officiating.
