From The Oak Ridger 7 Jun 2004 Virginia "Ginny" Lorraine CloutierJ John Littleton Petty Jr., 74, of Oak Ridge, David Leon "Bub" Sherrod, 58, of Clinton, Mae Jean Foley Walker, 88, of Maryville, Elias Welborn Whitfield Jr., 79, of Oak Ridge, Hugh Barnette, 81, of Oak Ridge, Grubb Wiilliam Joe Grubb, 70, of Oak Ridge, Virginia "Ginny" Lorraine Cloutier died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. According to her family, Mrs. Cloutier took joy in watching and feeding wild birds and caring for her pets. She touched many lives with her compassion, sense of humor and endless giving, her family said. She was very close to her children and mother, keeping in touch daily. She and her husband met and married in the mid-1950s when both were serving in the U.S. Air Force. She left the service after the couple married and together they raised a son and daughter. Throughout their life together they lived in Asia, Europe and the United States. She was preceded in death by her father, Paul M. Kendig; an aunt, Caroline Kendig; and by her husband, Albert Cloutier. Mrs. Cloutier is survived by her mother, Eva Kendig, of Clinton; her son, Ron Cloutier and wife, Donna, of Andersonville; her daughter, Michele Cloutier, of Clinton; and by her grandson, Daniel Fortin, of Clinton. She is also survived by her brother, Paul F. Kendig and wife, Becky, of Clinton; her sister, Betty Lerch and husband, John, of Pennsylvania; her sister-in-law, Claire Cloutier, of California; her brother-in-law, Donald Cloutier and wife, Barb, of New Hampshire; her aunt, Elgarda Daubert, of Pennsylvania; her nephew, David Kendig, of Florida; and by her niece, Barbara Felty, of Pennsylvania. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, where she will join her husband who died in June 2000. John Littleton Petty Jr., 74, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Jan. 22, 1930, in Atlanta, Ga., he was the son of John Littleton Petty Sr. and Irene Hayes Petty. He was a veteran, serving with the U.S. Army. He received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Hazardous Waste Remedial Actions Program, where he was acting director. Mr. Petty was a longtime active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities, one of which was a volunteer group that went to Willow Brook Elementary School weekly for a reading program. He was also a very active member of the Briarcliff Home Owners Association and also participated in volunteer work at Methodist Medical Center for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sara Ellen Lee-Collins, on Jan. 25, 2004. Mr. Petty is survived by his wife of 53 years, Allene Hudgins Petty; his son, Walter Petty and wife, Cheryl, of Kingston; seven grandchildren, James Lee, Jessica Southern, Cody Collins, Tommie Collins, Tracey Collins, Gregory Collins and Sydney Collins, all of Oak Ridge; and by a great-granddaughter, Bailey Lee of Buna, Texas. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Aldana Allen officiating. A graveside service will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton. Mr. Sherrod was the owner and operator of Sherrod's Auto Sales in South Clinton. He attended Valley View Baptist Church in Knoxville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Sherrod and Elizabeth Abbott Keith; his stepfather, Verlin Keith; and by a brother, Joe Sherrod. Mr. Sherrod is survived by his wife, Betty Sue Earley Sherrod; two sons, David Leon Sherrod Jr. and wife, Linda, of Knoxville and Bryan David Sherrod of Clinton; a special child, Bradley; four daughters, Rebecca Beeler and husband, Dan, Angela Travis and husband, Jeff, and Stephanie Sherrod, all of Knoxville, and Jennifer Jackson and husband, Mac, of Clinton; and by 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five brothers, James Wayne Sherrod and Terry Sherrod and wife, Hassie, all of Knoxville, Donny Keith and wife, Linda, of Clinton, and Jim Sherrod and wife, Donna, and John Schubert and wife, Bobbie, all of Texas; five sisters, Frances Snookie Monday, Patsy Freeman and husband, Riley, Darlene Write and Charlotte Prall, all of Knoxville and Evelyn Almoney and husband, Jr., of Clinton; and by a sister-in-law, Jodi Keith, of Knoxville. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Jerry Whitson and the Rev. Dewey Cooper officiating. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mae Jean Foley Walker, 88, of Maryville, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her last husband, Claude Walker, and by her prior husband, A.C. Babb. Mrs. Walker is survived by her son, Charles Audley Babb; a special close friend, Ruby Sandifur, of Maryville; and by several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will meet for a graveside service at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Sherwood Memorial Gardens. Born Sept. 7, 1924, in Benton, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Welborn Whitfield. Mr. Whitfield was a manager at Martin Marietta Energy Systems. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. He had a bachelor's degree from Tennessee Technological University. He was a Methodist and attended Kern Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a past exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 1684. Mr. Whitfield is survived by his wife of 53 years, June Smith Whitfield; his son, Elias Welborn "Sonny" Whitfield III and wife, Debbie; his daughter, June Denise "Bunny" Burgess and husband, Dr. John Burgess; his brother, Patrick H. Whitfield and wife, Lorellen, of Harriman; three sisters, Jean Whitfield Jacobs of Oneida, Maxine Whitfield Portwood of Harriman and Barbara Whitfield Paul and husband, Jim, of Knoxville; and by six grandchildren, Gene Davis, Jamie Davis, Mindy Whitfield, Manda Whitfield, Ashley Burgess and Jarrett Burgess. The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Kern Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Flynn officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
