From The Oak Ridger 9 Jun 2004 Walter Andrew Bogdanowicz, 91, formerly of Oak Ridge, Charles Kenneth Smith Sr., 55, of Oliver Springs, Ralph H. Daugherty, 82, of Oliver Springs, died Walter Andrew Bogdanowicz, 91, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Monday June 7, 2004, in Ann Arbor, Mich. Born June 16, 1912, in Gardner, Mass., he was the son of Andrew Peter and Johanna Mary Oscik Bogdanowicz, an immigrant family from Poland. He grew up on a farm in New England. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in Boston in 1937. He joined the Army in Fort Mammoth, N.J. His technological know-how was put to immediate use and he was commissioned by the U.S. Government to help start the first uranium diffusion plant in Oak Ridge in December of 1941. In May 1943, he was an electrical engineer at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. He received the Bronze Plaque "for exceptional excellence in the start-up of the first atomic separating plant" in 1945 and, among many other recognitions, he was an invited member of the Who's Who in Engineering, as well as of the International Book of Honor, a biographical institute which identifies those who helped make the country great. Mr. Bogdanowicz met his wife of 54 years, Beryl "Penny" Tucker, who died Sept. 23, 2001, on Nov. 1, 1946, and they were married three months later at United Church, Chapel on the Hill Church, as no Catholic church had yet been built. His wife entered the Catholic church and was baptized on Feb. 12, 1947 and they were married Feb. 15, 1947. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanislaus Bogdanowicz and Frank Bogdanowicz; and by a sister, Jenny Lipowski. Mr. Bogdanowicz is survived by two daughters, Sister Mary Theresa and Sister Joseph Andrew, both of religious Dominican Sisters of Mary-Mother of the Eucharist in Ann Arbor; his son, Don Michael Bogdanowicz, of Boston, Mass.; a brother, Chester Bogdanowicz, of Ann Arbor; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Tucker and wife, Lillian, and Harold Tucker and wife, Sharyn; five sisters-in-law, Grace Tabor, Della Raper, Ruth Ramey and husband, Gordon, Mary Lou Bailey and husband, George, and Fae Loveday; and by many nieces, nephews, special friends and church family, including the Rev. Meconi, SJ, Phyllis Braganini, Cathy Vinton, Dr. Chavey, George Pariseau, The Dominican Sisters, Mother of the Eucharist, friends in Ann Arbor, Dawn and staff of the Hospice program in Ann Arbor, Priests and religious sisters who have served at St. Mary's Parish/School in Oak Ridge, St. Mary's parishioners especially Bonnie and Joe Connor, Ceil Klemski and Eileen and Bill Levins. According to his family, their children and their church became the pillars of their life together. His Catholic faith charged everything he did; every conversation and plan of action was enveloped in his love for Christ and his holy family especially Mary, his family said. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Woods officiating. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens on the Oliver Springs Highway in Clinton. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, 4597 Warren Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. Born Aug. 22, 1948, in Harlan, Ky., he was the son of Lawrence Smith and Nella Naomi Lively Smith. He had lived in Oliver Springs since early childhood. He was employed as a Mechanic at Lambert's Automotive Repair of Oliver Springs for 18 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Lowell Smith. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Joanne White Smith; his son, Charles Kenneth Smith Jr. and wife, Hester, of Oliver Springs; his daughter, Teresa Deneen Mills and husband, Rob, of Knoxville; four stepsons, Shawn Jackson and wife, Mandy, Michael Jackson, B.J. Jackson and Nicky Jackson, all of Oliver Springs; two grandsons, Taylor Smith and Ian Smith; his stepgrandson, Shane Jackson; and by three brothers, David Smith and wife, Mary, and Ray Smith and wife, Diana, all of Oliver Springs and Donald Smith and wife, Debbie, of Oak Ridge. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Ralph H. Daugherty, 82, of Oliver Springs, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
