From The Oak Ridsger 8 Jun 2004 Hugh Barnette, 81, of Oak Ridge, William "Bill" Joseph Grubb, 70, of Oak Ridge, Alma Lee Owens, 73, of Clinton, Joshua Wilkerson, 19, of Andersonville, Walter A. Bogdanowicz, 91, formerly of Oak Ridge, Charles Kenneth Smith, 55, of Clinton, Hugh Barnette, 81, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. Born March 12, 1923, he was the son of Bill and Rose Barnette. Mr. Barnette grew up in LaFollette, where his father was a coal miner. A World War II veteran, he served in the Navy from 1941 to 1945 hauling ammunitions to Guam, Saipan, Hawaii and New York. After the war, he was like thousands of others returning home - he wanted to get a job and marry his sweetheart, Margaret Robinson, his family said. In 1948, the couple was married and shared 39 years before her demise in 1987. Mr. Barnette is survived by four children, Michael W. Barnette and wife, Audrey, of Knoxville, and Ronald P. Barnette and wife, Carol, Nancy E. Harvest and husband, Johnny, and Jill T. Barnette, all of Oak Ridge; nine grandchildren, Larissa D. Harvest of Chattanooga, Curtis A. Harvest, Margaret Harvest, Ronald C. Barnette, and Jaden Barnette, all of Oak Ridge, Jeremy M. Barnette, Tiffany T. Barnette and Shantae Cherry, all of Knoxville, and Shawnee Little and husband, Terrell, of Birmingham, Ala.; seven great-grandchildren, Rondriea Clemons, Ayunnah Shadrick, Naveah Sharick and LaShawna Cherry, all of Knoxville, Jamal Young and Jamar Young, both of Oak Ridge, and Jordan LeNoir of Birmingham; three sisters-in-law, Ceclia Robinson of New York, N.Y., Mamie Sue Cantrell of Richmond, Ky. and Betty Jean Shephard of LaFollette; extended family, Diane Barnette; a special cousin, Lillian Pettus; beloved friends, Dorothy Maddox and the Rev. Boyd Carter; and by a host of other relatives. A longtime resident of Oak Ridge, Mr. Barnette was employed at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant for more than 40 years and never missed a shift. His family said he was an avid hunter and gardener. For more than 50 years, he has been the sexton at United Church, Chapel on the Hill. He worked with the ministers and congregation in all aspects of ministry, especially the nursery. "The people in this church have meant so much to me over the years," he said. "I have a special place in my heart for them and that will never change." The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Dr. Boyd Carter officiating. A graveside service will follow at the Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Special donations can be made to the nursery school at United Church, Chapel on the Hill, 85 Kentucky Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary. William "Bill" Joseph Grubb, 70, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, June 7, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Aug. 28, 1933, in St. Paul, Va., he was the son of Kelly Marshall Grubb and Gertrude Nora Williams Grubb. He was a 1954 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, where he lettered in all sports. In that same year, he also earned the title of Featherweight Champion of the Southern Golden Gloves Association. He served with the U.S. Army for two years. Mr. Grubb retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, where he was a machinist. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the International Association of Machinists. He was also an avid golfer and member of South Hills Golf Club, where he also worked as a ranger during the spring and summer months. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Preston Grubb and by his sister, Betty Haggard. Mr. Grubb is survived by his wife of 46 years, Beverly Ann Owens Grubb; two daughters, Donna Marie Grubb McCammon and husband, Jonathan, of Knoxville and Mitzi Gayla Grubb of Oak Ridge; two brothers, Lonnie Marshall Grubb and wife, Madeline, of Claxton and Vernon Eugene Grubb of Knoxville; a sister, Ozella Pickard and husband, Oakie, of Knoxville; his former sister-in-law, Mary Schaefer, of Oak Ridge; two grandchildren, Jonathan Tyler McCammon and Savannah Nicole Wisman; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Dr. Steve McDonald officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 10, at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton. R.H. Brown, L.C. Parker, Bill E. Sise and Eddie Smith will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 163 N. Jefferson Circle, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Alma Lee Owens, 73, of Clinton, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Owens was a member of Poplar Creek Baptist Church in the Marlow community. Her family said she was a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and May Long, and by a brother and seven sisters. Mrs. Owens is survived by her husband, Ralph Owens; her son, Robert Owens, of Clinton; four sisters, Aline Duncan and Mildred Johnson, both of Clinton, Flo Nathand of Florida and Gail Keith of Michigan; and by three grandchildren, Robert C. Owens and family of Athens and Christy Reece and family and Monica Owens, all of Clinton. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, 32 nieces and nephews and by a special friend, Bonnie Keathley. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in the chapel of Jones Mortuary in Clinton with the Rev. Joseph Copeland officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Galbrieth Cemetery in Clinton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Joshua Wilkerson, 19, of Andersonville, died Sunday, June 6, 2004. He graduated with high distinction at Anderson County High School in 2004. While in high school he finished third in the National Future Farmers of America Land judging competition in Oklahoma. He planned to attend Pellissippi State Community College late this summer. According to his family, Joshua's hobby was working on old cars. He was a member of Lone Mountain Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Contessa Anna Wilkerson; a special friend, Kayla Sheehan; and by his grandfather, Jesse Carter. Joshua is survived by his father, Gary Wilkerson and stepmother, Deborah, of Andersonville; his mother, Mary Carter of Winter Haven, Fla.; his brother, Jacob Lee Wilkerson, of Andersonville; his grandparents, Curtis and Geraldine Wilkerson of Andersonville and Edna Lewallen of Lake City; a special uncle, Anthony Wilkerson, of Andersonville; several other aunts and uncles; and by a special friend, Toby Geren, of Clinton. The funeral will be at noon Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with Mark Morrison and the Rev. Roger Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens on the Oliver Springs Highway in Clinton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, at the funeral home. Walter A. Bogdanowicz, 91, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Monday, June 7, 2004, in Ann Arbor, Mich. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete at presstime. Charles Kenneth Smith, 55, of Clinton, died Monday, June 7, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
