From The Oak Ridger 17 Aug 2004 Hazel Marie Baird, 79, formerly of the Solway Geraldine "Deane" Jackson, 80, of Clinton, Marjorie Saye Rathkamp, 79, of Grays, S.C., Doris Gartley Reynolds, 95, a resident of Oak Ridge Flara Lucinda Smurdon, 90, of Oliver Springs, Beulah Collidge Wallace, 83, of Andersonville, Mary E. Tittsworth, 90, of Oak Ridge, Hazel Marie Baird, 79, formerly of the Solway community, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Jellico Community Hospital in Jellico. Born March 11, 1925, in Eagan, she was the daughter of James Franklin and Bertha Williams Owens. She was a member of the Mount Harmony Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, hunting ginseng, flowers and sewing. She worked as a riveter for Martin Marietta in Baltimore, Md. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Baird, a sister and a brother Hannah Adams and Harold Owens, and three grandsons, Bobby Kyle Keisling, Robert Lee Keisling and Randal Baird. Mrs. Baird is survived by her son Bobby Lee Keisling of Powell; eight grandchildren, Robert Keisling of London, Ky., Brenda Champlin of Alabama, William Creed Keisling and Shane Keisling, both of Williamsburg, Ky., and Bobbie Sherri, Pamela Bailey, Russell Baird and Terry Ballard; her nieces, Marjorie Chambers, of Taylor, Mich., Lena Petrey of Williamsburg, Ky., Donna Douglas of Portage, Ind.; and by a special cousin, Leon King and wife, Amy, of Oak Ridge. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Hale officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. She was a member of Haynes Memorial Baptist Church in Avondale, N.C. She is preceded in death by parents, John B. and Cordie Hall Hawkins. Mrs. Jackson is survived by her husband, Charles T. Jackson; her son, Charles "Mickey" Jackson and wife, Laura, of Baxter; and two grandchildren, Laurie Bell of Cookevile and Frank Jackson of Nashville. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Tennessee Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Marjorie Saye Rathkamp, 79, of Grays, S.C., died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, S.C. Born in Chattanooga on Aug. 25, 1924, she was the daughter of George Paul Saye and Aldora Church Saye. She was a retired executive secretary for the U.S. Government Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge, a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Ridgeland, S.C. and enjoyed arts, crafts, gardening and her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Ralph Rathkamp, Sr. and one daughter, Carolyn Jeanne Rathkamp. She is survived by friends in South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Ridgeland, S.C. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Building Fund, 2718 Bees Creek Road, Ridgeland, S.C. 29936. Doris Gartley Reynolds, 95, a resident of Oak Ridge since 1943, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge, where she had been admitted last Tuesday. She had been in declining health for several months. Born Oct. 6, 1908, in Paris, Ill., she was the daughter of John and Bessie Bailey Gartley. She was the widow of William Moore Reynolds, whom she married in 1939 in Chattanooga. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, a sister and a grandson. Mrs. Reynolds received her bachelor's degree at Ball State Teachers College in Muncie, Ind., graduating with honors. Her career began with a teaching position at Kennard High School, New Castle, Ind., in 1929. She moved to Chattanooga, where she was a buyer for Vogue Department Store. From 1947 to 1974, she was a registrar at Oak Ridge High School until she retired. In 1975, she became an account executive/travel consultant with Polaris Travel and retired in February 2004. As a pioneer resident of Oak Ridge, Mrs. Reynolds was active in many civic and social organizations. She was a charter and lifetime member of Altrusa International of Oak Ridge and served as president from 1956 to 1959. Most recently, the club honored her with a scholarship in her name in recognition of her contributions and service in education. She was a charter and lifetime member of the Oak Ridge Woman's Club and also a charter member of the Oak Ridge Folk Dance Club and the '43 Club. In 1946, as the spouse of a charter member, she helped with rock and weed removal at the Oak Ridge Country Club. She held initial memberships with the gray ladies at Oak Ridge Hospital of the Methodist Church and The '49ers Square Dance Club, and was also a substitute caller. From 1944 to 1949, she was active both behind the scenes and as a performer at the Oak Ridge Community Playhouse, and helped to organize the children's playhouse, where she also directed plays. In 1957, she was a bookkeeper and an original investor of the Emory Valley Corp. Foremost among her special interests were her travels, which included all the major continents, islands, 90 countries and numerous cruises, according to her family. One of her last excursions was a Concorde SST/Orient Express-Queen Elizabeth II ocean liner travel package. She was known to many local civic and social groups for her slide presentations, particularly of her seven trips to China. Mrs. Reynolds is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen R. and John R. Carver of Oak Ridge; her son and daughter-in-law, Jon M. "Mickey" and Sarah Reynolds of Dallas, Texas; her grandchildren, Scott Sherrod of Valdosta, Ga., Brett Sherrod of Acworth, Ga., Ashley Brouke Seiber of Powell, Douglas Reynolds of Brookline, Mass., Caroline Reynolds of Belchertown, Mass., and Eliott Reynolds and Nicholas Reynolds, both of Dallas; and by five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. A private burial will be held Thursday at Anderson Memorial Gardens on Oliver Springs Highway. Flara Lucinda Smurdon, 90, of Oliver Springs, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born April 19, 1914, in Anderson County, she was the daughter of Elisah Monroe Vann and Tennie Rebecca Parten Vann. Mrs. Smurdon lived in Indiana for 25 years before moving back to Tennessee. She was a member of the Mountain Assembly of God in Oliver Springs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Daniel Hacker, three brothers and three sisters, Jimmy M. Vann, Euell Vann, Mart Vann, Florence Russell, Anna Bell Daugherty and Maggie Fritts, and by a son-in-law, Buddy Tucker. Mrs. Smurdon is survived by her husband, Donald Smurdon; four children, Gibb L. Hacker and wife, Imogene, of Halls, and Bobbie J. Tucker, Willie Mae Justice and husband, Orlie, and Lillie Lough and husband, Albert, all of Oliver Springs. She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Sheryl Vargus and husband, Chris, of Gary, Ind.; a sister, Roxie Russell of Oliver Springs; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. The family expresses special appreciation to the second and fourth west nurses and the entire staff of the cardiac care unit at Methodist Medical Center. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Ralph Wilson, the Rev. Don Daugherty and the Rev. Ozzie Freeman officiating. Burial and a graveside service will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the funeral home. Beulah Collidge Wallace, 83, of Andersonville, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Saint Mary's Hospice in Knoxville. She was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church in Andersonville and the daughter of Bennett and Lucinda Newport Loy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Edgar Wallace, twin sons, Willie and Edgar Wallace, two brothers and three sisters. She is survived by daughters Geneva Warwick, Nellie Moles and husband, Ralph, all of Andersonville, Lila Kelley and husband, Carl, and Linda Dishman and husband, David, all of Clinton. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Sitton officiating. Burial will be at Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Andersonville. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17 at the funeral home. Mary E. Tittsworth, 90, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
