Smurdon, 90, of Oliver Springs, Ann Cofer, 89, a resident of the Little Emory Community in Roane County, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born April 14, 1915, in Roane County, she graduated from the Wheat school in 1933 and resided in Roane County all her life. She was a homemaker, a member of Big Emory Baptist Church and attended Mount Pisgah Baptist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Abe F. Cofer Jr., her parents, William A. Tedder and Maude E. Wright Tedder, two children, Esther Cohn and Abe F. "Frank" Cofer III, two brothers, Lloyd and Glenn A. Tedder and by a grandson, Michael Shane Cofer. She is survived by a daughter, Susie McLemore and husband, Billy, of Memphis, a son, David Cofer and wife, Tammy, of Harriman, nine grandchildren, Dana McLemore Edwards, Dr. Leah Cohn, Todd McLemore, Keena Cofer Aigner, Brian Cohn, David McLemore, Dr. Jonathan Cohn, David Wayne Cofer and Jacqueline Cofer Goepper, four great-grandchildren, Ann McLemore, Laura Davis, Mabry Edwards and Eli Davis and a son-in-law, Dr. Hawns O. Cohn, of Oak Ridge. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Garvan Walls and the Rev. Robbie Leach officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Roane Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends between 6 and 8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Walter Donald Hoyle, 78, of Clinton, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at Windwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Clinton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie J. Huff Hoyle and brothers, John Edwin and Hollis Reynolds. He is survived by his daughter, Trina Clinton and husband, Rodney, of Christiana; grandchildren, Brittany and Brian Clinton, of Christiana; a brother, Thomas Frank Reynolds and wife, Anita, of Nashville; two sisters, Joan Lohr and Burnette Adkins, both of Maryville; and several nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Shiloh Cemetery with the Rev. Ben Whitted officiating. She was a member of Haynes Memorial Baptist Church in Avondale, N.C. She is preceded in death by parents, John B. and Cordie Hall Hawkins. Mrs. Jackson is survived by her husband, Charles T. Jackson; her son, Charles "Mickey" Jackson and wife, Laura, of Baxter; and two grandchildren, Laurie Bell of Cookevile and Frank Jackson of Nashville. Nancy Fee Jackson, 86, of Beaver Dam, Ky., died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, in Belleville, Ill. Born March 27, 1918, in Avawam, Ky., she was the daughter of Maggie Miniard and Hiram Fee. She grew up in Pansy, Ky., and married Hix Jackson on Dec. 30, 1934. She and her husband reared five children in Pansy. She and her family were very active in the Pansy Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Women's Missionary Union and taught Sunday School. She was also active in the Order of Eastern Star. She and her husband moved to Beaver Dam in 1965, and became active members of the Independence Baptist Church in McHenry, Ky. Her husband died in 1993 and in 2000 Mrs. Jackson moved to Belleville, Ill., to live with her daughter, Mary Lou Shepherd. Mrs. Jackson enjoyed church, sewing, reading, quilting, gardening and most of all her children and grandchildren, her family said. According to her family, she was a loving generous woman who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Her greatest joy in life was to see the six generations that she and her husband started, her family said. In addition to her daughter in Belleville, Mrs. Jackson is survived by a daughter, Yvonne Pershall of Minooka, Ill.; her grandson, Randy Jackson of Rockport, Ky.; two daughters-in-law, Merline Jackson of Morris, Ill., and Alta Sorrels of Beaver Dam; and by 12 other grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great-grandchild. The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Independence Baptist Church. Burial was at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway. John Russell Jones Sr., 92, of Kodak, formerly of Karns, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Fort Sanders Sevier Nursing Home. Mr. Jones retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division and was a member of Kodak Community Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Josephine Jones, his wife, Martha Keene Jones and a son, S. Joe Jones. Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Ruby Brooks Jones; two sons and a daughter-in-law, J.R. Jones Jr. of Oak Ridge, and Samuel K. and Terri Jones of Karns; two daughters-and a son-in-law, Nancy Hardin of Oak Ridge, and Mary Ann and Steve Swafford of Solway community; a sister, Dorothy Griggs of Winchester, Ky.; a stepdaughter, Lorraine King; and by 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was to be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens. Jack Kyle Mead, 82, of Oliver Springs, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at home in Kingston. Born Aug. 16, 1921, in Oliver Springs, he was a devout Christian, member of Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge and he also served the Oliver Springs First Baptist Church as the choir director and he also served as church treasurer for many years. Mr. Mead was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving his country during World War II. He was retired from the coal industry where he was employed for many years in various capacities. He was an avid hiker, enjoying many of the mountainous trails of the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, the Big South Fork National Park and Frozen Head State Park. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Albert Mead, Sr. and Ruby Clyde Wright Mead, and a brother, Howard Lesley Mead. He is survived by his wife, Robena Hoskins Mead, of Kingston; a daughter, Pati McKinney and husband, Gene, of Knoxville; a son, Jack Kyle Mead II and wife, Amanda L., of Ten Mile; a brother George Albert Mead, Jr. and wife, Sammie, of Oliver Springs; a sister, Hilda Mead Gill and husband, Alan, of Powell; and five grandchildren, Katherine Holston, of Amarillo, Texas, Courtney Holston, of Knoxville, Gregory Mead, Steven Mead and Sam Mead, all of Ten Mile. William Clyde Wilks, 67, of Kingsport, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at his home. Born in Fayette, Ala., he served with the U.S. Navy and had lived in Kingsport for the past 35 years. Wilks was employed with the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department for 25 years, retiring six years ago. While attending Oak Ridge High School, Wilks had his own early morning radio show on WOKE. Music was one of his great loves, according to family members. After returning from the Navy, he worked at various radio and TV stations before joining the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department. According to family members, Wilks loved flying and had his pilot's license. They said he loved growing plants and working in his yard, adding that he fell in love with orchids following a vacation to Hawaii and grew them extensively. Family members also said he enjoyed senior citizen activities at the Renaissance Center. Wilks was preceded in death by his father, J.C. "Jim" Wilks in 1981. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Wilks; son, Scott Wilks and wife, Donna, of Knoxville; daughter, Donna Mischke and husband, Kevin, of Knoxville; mother, Elsie Wilks of Oak Ridge; a sister, Betty Washington of Oak Ridge; and by six grandchildren and his loving dog, Sara. A memorial service was held Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes in Kingsport, with the Rev. Gerald Jones officiating.
