Stubbs, 66, formerly of Oliver Springs, Harvey Paul Watson, 91, of Louisville, Ky., Ruth S. Mayes, 84, of Oak Ridge, Macie J. Davis of Oak Ridge, Juanita "Nita" Johnson Cardwell, 91, of Starkville, Miss., died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Cantrell's Personal Care Home in Starkville. Born March 11, 1913, in Greenwood, S.C., she grew up in Spartanburg, S.C., and graduated from Converse College in 1934, where she majored in French. She taught school in South Carolina. She married David Withers Cardwell Sr. on Oct. 24, 1936, and they remained married for 63 years until his death in January 2000. The Cardwells lived in Spartanburg and in Blacksburg, Va., for the first seven years of their married life. In 1943, they moved to the newly constructed town of Oak Ridge and were among the earliest residents and considered themselves true pioneers. In their more than 50 years of residence, they made lifelong friends and participated in many activities the town had to offer. They were charter members of both The United Church, Chapel on the Hill, and the Oak Ridge '43 Club. Mrs. Cardwell served on the United Church board of trustees and was active in the Women of the Church. She was a member of the Nine Hole Golf Group at the Oak Ridge Country Club, where she participated into her 80s. She was a cofounder of the Holiday Bureau In Lieu of Christmas Cards Fund. She was also a charter member of the YWCA of Oak Ridge and a hospital volunteer. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and particularly enjoyed the association's book discussion group. In all of her activities, she demonstrated a willing spirit and sincere interest in others. Mrs. Cardwell is survived by a daughter, Martha Cardwell Sparrow and husband, Charles, of Starkville; a son, David Withers Cardwell Jr. and wife, Bev, of Rock Hill, S.C.; five grandchildren, Charles Sparrow Jr. and wife, Nicole, of Atlanta, Ga., Jennie Sparrow and husband, David Lowenthal of Athens, Ga., David Withers Cardwell III and wife, Michelle, of Riverside, Calif., Christian Cardwell and wife, Lisa, of Kings Mountain, N.C., and William Cardwell of Clover, S.C.; and by a sister, Helen J. Miller of Mobile, Ala. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Cantrell's Personal Care Home for their professional loving care of Mrs. Cardwell and for their unfailing support to the family. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the garden of the Good Shepherd of Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Wilma Jean Durham, 56, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at her home. She attended Mountain Ash Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sillis Durham, her parents, Everett and Georgia Mae Wilburn Lay, and a brother, H.D. Lay. She is survived by her children, Jason Durham and Jennifer Sharp, both of LaFollette; two brothers, Arvil Lay of Oneida and Everett Lay Jr., of Clinton; three sisters, Joyce Padgett and Jewell Rose, both of LaFollette, and Rose Mary Terry of Clinton; her best friend, Shirley Kidwell of Clinton; and by several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, in the chapel of Martin Wilson Funeral Home in LaFollette with the Rev. Ray Graham officiating. Burial will be at Hall Cemetery. Central Ave., LaFollette, TN 37766. Rebecca Aiton Gentry, 80, of 114 Aiton Drive, Greenwood, S.C., died Friday, July 30, 2004, at her home. Born Feb. 7, 1924, in Callison, S.C., she was the daughter of James Shepard and Mary Kaupfear Aiton. She was a cum laude graduate of Lander College in 1977 and retired from Monsanto after many years of service. She was the widow of Edward Jean Gentry. Mrs. Gentry was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of Ninety Six, where she taught the TEL Sunday School class. Mrs. Gentry is survived by three sons, Edward Jean Gentry Jr. of Lompoc, Calif., and James Roger Gentry and William Davis Gentry, both of Ninety Six; three daughters, Betty McKittrick of Oak Ridge, Deborah Kay Shiflet of York, S.C., and Bobbie Jean Miller of Pendleton, S.C.; a sister and a brother, Virginia Aiton Rush and Joseph Edmund Aiton, both of Greenwood; and by 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. The funeral was to be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Ninety Six with the Rev. Robin Fisher, the Rev. Steve Justice and the Rev. Charles Sprouse officiating. Burial was to be at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Eric Gentry, John Mark Shiflet, Barry Schofield, Chris Gettys, Charlie Coxe and Kevin Crittendon served as pallbearers. Ruth Rankin, age 87, of Mossy Grove, died Friday, July 30, 2004, in the Life Care Center of Morgan County. She was a member of Union Baptist Church. Mrs. Rankin was a former beautician and, according to her family, loved to quilt and garden. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Laura Lamance; sisters, Molly Heidel and June Lamance; and her son-in-law, Wayne Lovelace Jr. She is survived by her husband, William Rankin; daughters and sons-in-law, Anna Laura and Don Mack of Mossy Grove and Billye and David Carrington of Oak Ridge; grandchildren, Deborah Lovelace of Memphis, Donna Jo Decote of Phoenix, Ariz., Joann Hill of Mossy Grove, and Lydia Thugut of Durham, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Danielle Powers, Donnie Decote, Ashley Decote, and Holly Thugut; great-great granddaughter, Bella Taylor; sister, Helen Joyce; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Ruth Lamance. Pearl Mae Slack, 86, of Oliver Springs, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Oct. 10, 1917, in Tasso, she was the daughter of Andrew Mull and Iowa Ownby Mull. She moved to Oliver Springs in 1948 and was a homemaker and member of Community Baptist Church of Oliver Springs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Slack, a great-granddaughter, Brittany Armes, and two brothers and three sisters, Olen Mull, Cecil Mull, Irene Cross, Nola Edwards and Carrie Mull. Mrs. Slack is survived by a daughter, Patsy Gallaher and husband, Richard Allen, of Oliver Springs; three sons, Harold Slack and wife, Arlene, of Oak Ridge, Charles Slack and wife, Judy, of Coalfield, and McNoel Slack and wife, Linda of Oliver Springs; and six grandchildren, Lisa Kay Armes, Dean Slack, Stacie Lynn Hickman, Sharon Powers, Richard Gallaher and Jeree Denise Slack. She is also survived by a sister and three brothers, Lois Schrimpsher of Chattanooga, Wayne Mull of East Ridge, Glenn Mull of Cohutta, Ga., and Boyd Mull of Ooltewah; 10 great-grandchildren; and by many nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends. Dock Aldrige Stewart Jr., 55, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004. Mr. Stewart, affectionately called Dock Junior by his family and friends, was born June 15, 1949, to Dock Stewart Sr. of Oak Ridge and Ocie Lee Stewart, now deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Stewart. He was a member of Oak Valley Baptist Church and a 1967 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, where he held several records in track. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after serving in Vietnam. Mr. Stewart was employed with Southern Railroad in Knoxville. He enjoyed sports, working on old cars and doing construction work. According to his family, he loved his family and leaves to cherish his memory 15 children, Lakeshia Smith of Oak Ridge, Dock Stewart III, Joshua Whitehead, Chastity Whitehead, Tommy Whitehead, Jabar Whitehead and Doshenique Stewart, all of Knoxville, Shamantha "Niecy" Hughes and husband, Theodore, of Memphis, Edward Lewis Davidson of St. Paul, Minn., Donna Frazier and husband, Anthony, of Chicago, Ill., Sophia Keith and husband, Marvie, of Sauk Village, Ill., Cynthia Morse and husband, Kenneth, of Richton Park, Ill., and Roberta Bohanon, Daphne Bohanon and Ronnie Boyd, all of Atlanta, Ga. Unity Mortuary in Knoxville is in charge of arrangements. Cecil G. Stubbs, 66, formerly of Oliver Springs, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at his residence in Ypsilanti Township, Mich. He was born in Oliver Springs on Sept. 16, 1937. Mr. Stubbs lived in Michigan for many years. He was employed with Ford Motor Co., retiring from the Rawsonville Plant in Ypsilanti. He was also a U.S. veteran. Mr. Stubbs was preceded in death by his parents, L.L. Stubbs and Nell Wright Stubbs; two brothers, James Lewis Stubbs and Raymond Lee Stubbs; and, a sister, Ruth Robbins. He is survived by daughters, Vickie Bearden and her husband, Barry, of Belleville, Mich., Tammy Shwarz and husband, William, of Burlington, N.C.; sons, Ricky Stubbs of Dallas, Texas, Timmy Stubbs of Oak Ridge; brothers, George T. Stubbs and wife, Bonnie, of Oak Ridge, Hubert L. Stubbs and wife, Sharon K., of Belleville; a sister, Carol Lou McQueen of Burlington; a sister-in-law, Mary Stubbs of Oliver Springs; and many nieces and nephews. Harvey Paul Watson, 91, of Louisville, Ky., died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Wesley Manor Retirement Community in Louisville. Born in Breckenridge, Texas, he was the son of John Paul Watson and Elsie Allen Watson. He served as a corporal in the 13th Cavalry with the U.S. Army from 1933 to 1941. Mr. Watson was a retired maintenance foreman with Public Service Indiana, Gallagher Station, New Albany, Ind., and taught welding at various vocational schools in southern Indiana. He was also an orchardist and farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, the mother of their children, June Watson. They had been married nearly 50 years at the time of her death. Mr. Watson is survived by his wife of 15 years, Virginia Watson; his daughters, Annetta Watson and husband, Robert Luxmoore, of Coalfield, formerly of Oak Ridge, Winona Stutzenberger of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Leslie Watson of Louisville; his sister, Grace Hansen of Fremont, Neb.; and by a grandchild. A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in the Bishop William T. Watkins Memorial Chapel of the Wesley Manor Retirement Community in Louisville.
